About National Brass Band Championships Of Great Britain

The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain is an annual event, held at two separate venues to determine the Champion Bands of Great Britain

National Brass Band Championships Of Great Britain Description

Kapitol Promotions Twitter: @kapitol_promo

The ‘National’, as it is often referred to, is brass banding’s equivalent of the football league – a first-past-the-post Championship involving some 600 bands in eight ‘Regional’ qualifying heats staged up and down the UK, plus two ‘Finals’ events.

The National Brass Band Championships, which have existed since 1945 in their current format, are split into five sections – Championship Section, and Sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 – and eight qualifying regions in the UK. These are the London & Southern Counties, the Midlands, the North of England, the North West, Scotland, Wales, the West of England and Yorkshire. Depending upon the number of bands entered into each section in each region, the top two, three and sometimes four placed bands qualify for a place in the ‘Finals’, held in the autumn each year. The Lower Section Finals, showcasing Sections 1 – 4, are held at the Centaur in Cheltenham in September, and the Championship Section Final is held at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall in October. The first four bands in the Championship Section Final secure automatic entry for the following year’s equivalent event. The results of the Regional Championships not only determine the bands that qualify for an invitation to the National Finals, but also their gradings for the following year’s Regional Championships.

The last few years have seen a renaissance in the popularity of the ‘National’, particularly the Championship Section event held in the Royal Albert Hall, London, which now attracts over 4, 000 each year to hear the band world’s top ensembles battle for the UK’s top title. The Championship Section Final is further enhanced, regularly, by a glittering concert showcasing the brass band world’s top talent. Recent years have seen a plethora of stars appear in the Gala Concert, including the country’s leading trumpet players, Tony Fisher and the late Derek Watkins and Don Lusher, the dazzling international euphoniumist, David Childs, LSO Brass, the Band of HM Royal Marines, Black Dyke and Cory Band, the eclectic Mnozil Brass and many, many more performance giants.

LONDON & SOUTHERN COUNTIES REGIONAL COMMITTEE PRESS RELEASE - 26th March 2020

We would like to thank all bands for their patience since we cancelled the Area Contest on 13th March, which was a decision we took in advance of Government and BBE advice in order to ensure everyone’s safety at our event. The Committee are all volunteers, a large proportion of whom were also expecting to play at the Contest, and have exactly the ...same concerns as everyone else, such as our own health and that of our family and friends. We were acutely aware that we needed to find a solution for a way forward and thought it best to take our time and agree at the fairest decisions for all of the 81 bands that had entered the Contest. We know that some of these decisions wont sit well with everyone, but our role is to be impartial and to treat every band with equal respect and consideration, irrespective of their status and grading.
The Regional Committee have therefore agreed this way forward:
1. The 2020 Contest was formally cancelled, so no alternative dates or venues will be sought. 2. Entry fees will be refunded in full to band secretaries over the coming weeks. 3. The pre-2020 Contest grading tables will remain unchanged, and so the next three years points cycle will comprise of the results from 2018, 2019 and 2021. 4. Promotion and relegation will be suspended this year and bands will be required to enter the same section in 2021 as they did for 2020. 5. With the agreement of Kapitol Promotions Ltd., no bands, from any of the sections, will be nominated for an invitation to the Finals. We realise how disappointing this will be to those bands near the top of their respective tables, but please understand this decision was not taken lightly.
We trust that the bands accept this solution in the spirit in which it is intended. Two weeks ago we’d never heard of self-isolating and social-distancing, but hopefully we can all look forward to resuming our banding in the near future.
Stay well, and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
Kevin Williams (Secretary, L&SC Regional Committee) Phil Doe (Chair, L&SC Regional Committee)

London & Southern Counties Regional Championships 2020 cancelled, due to COVID-19.
STATEMENT FROM KEVIN WILLIAMS (Regional Secretary, London & Southern Counties Area Qualifying Contest): Following ongoing discussion and debate amongst the Regional Committee ever since the Coronavirus outbreak first appeared we have desperately been trying to find a way of allowing the contest to go ahead as planned.
... Even though the Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre are currently still operating normally we have come to the decision that our duty of care in ensuring your health and safety can not be guaranteed, and so we have taken the devastating decision to cancel this year's event.
The Committee are desperately sad to have had to take this course of action but trust you understand our reasons for doing so.
Over the coming days we will be firming up how we manage the grading tables and advancement of bands to the National Finals and will not make any further comment until they have been finalised.
I would like to thank my Committee and Chairman for their advice and enduring support through what has been an incredibly stressful time for us all.
