Ever tried your hand at making sour dough🍞? Now's the time to give it a go!
We are giving away FREE sour dough starters from the shop on Friday and Saturday. Bring in your own container to pick some up and you can get baking over the weekend πŸ‘. But it's first come first serve so let us know in advance if you would like us to save you some.
We speak to so many people who are interested in sour dough and Rob has got completely hooked on this traditional bread baking method. We'll be putting up his tried and tested favourite recipe later this week 😁. The wonderful rye flour from Talgarth Mill, available at Natural Weigh of course, is particularly good for the starter

This video from Greenpeace UK made us chuckle but it has a distinct ring of truth behind it. There is a feeling that supermarkets are trying to ignore the plastic pollution problem.

Happy April Fool's Day everyone. Wish this one were true though! πŸ˜’πŸ˜‚

If anyone is still not sure what to do with your 'biodegradable' plastic-like products, this video is very information and highlights just how much of a problem using some of these products can be!

Pears, nuts and chocolate 🀀. What a combination. This cake is always a winner and makes a lovely dinner party finale or just a week night pick me up.
It is gluten free too πŸ‘

The UK is one of the most wildlife depleted countries on the planet...but we can change that. Taking action for nature can be anything, from reducing your reliance on single use plastic, to creating wild spaces in your garden, to supporting amazing charities doing wonderful things for our wildlife.
This is a wonderful video by The Wildlife Trusts and will hopefully encourage us all to do more for nature πŸ’šπŸŒΏπŸ¦”

Did you know it is estimated that UK households generate around 7.1 million tonnes of food waste a year😱! This is worth a whopping Β£15 billion πŸ’·πŸ’·. I can certainly think of better uses for that money.
So here is our latest blog post with 5 tips on how we can all keep our food waste down.
Let us know what you think πŸ˜€

As a refill shop, we absolutely love this campaign!πŸ’š
Let's celebrate take away outlets who let you bring your own container. Let's encourage cafes and fast-food places to move away from unsustainable, single use packaging. After all, it often ends up as litter.
If you have a favourite take away eatery, ask if they would like to get involved! They get a place on the map and their own window sticker πŸ‘
... Check the map to see where you can already take your own lunchbox.

πŸ’š**Calling anyone who loves Crickhowell!**πŸ’š
Clarence Hall, which has been the site of so many wonderful and enlightening events in the town, needs your help. If this old building is to continue to serve the community of Crickhowell, it needs funding so that it can pay its own way in future.
The power of the people in this beautiful town is strong (as evidenced by the Corn Exchange project which resulted in the site of our shop!). Please join us in donating and supporting th...is worthy cause.

We have had refillable white vinegar from Sesi Detergent Refill for a few weeks now. We knew it was a great multipurpose cleaner but we did not know of all the many uses to which this product can be put. From rust removal to furniture polish, here are some of our favourites. Enjoy πŸ˜€

One of the things we often get asked for is a plastic free face cream or moisturiser. We have the beautiful Kutis Skincare body butter but this isn't specially formulated for more sensitive skin, such as that on our faces.
Thankfully, the folks at The Health Cloud have been looking into this and the conclusion...coconut oil is just as effective at moisturising the skin as commercial skin creamsπŸ₯₯πŸ₯₯πŸ₯₯. And even better, it has antibacterial properties and is good for overall skin health πŸ‘πŸ’š.
Coconut oil comes almost exclusively in glass jars so, although we don't *currently* offer a refill service for this product, at least the packaging can be reused πŸ˜€

Plastic Free Crickhowell is doing fantastic work in town encouraging businesses to reduce single use packaging and, as a result, these three independent businesses have been selected as Plastic Free Business Champions for Crickhowell πŸ‘.
Congratulations [book-ish], Webbs of Crickhowell and Wern Watkin bunkhouse.
Hats off to some of the other wonderful businesses in town who are also working towards reducing single use plastic in their businesses. You are all stars too!

It may seem a long time coming but high level policy change on plastic pollution is on its way😁! There are currently THREE separate consultations out with the aim of tackling the packaging challenge. Briefly, these are:
πŸ“„The Extended Producer Responsibility consultation which aims to place the burden of responsible disposable on those making the packaging
πŸ“„The Deposit Return Scheme, which will involve an additional charge on plastic bottles which is refunded on their return....
πŸ“„The third and final consultation is looking to tax production of plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled content.
All of these issues are so important and, although focussing primarily on recycling, are a giant step in the right direction. It took me a whole afternoon to respond to all three but if you can spare any time at all to whizz through and highlight the need to move away from single use packaging we can all get our voices heard and contribute to something which is bigger than all of us πŸ’š.
Thank you in advance for being part of the solution πŸ‘
The link below has a helpful summary of each of these consultations and links to them.

We are now officially one year oldπŸŽŠπŸŽ‰.
Looking back on the last 12 months (and longer) it has been a lot of hard work from the moment we signed the lease but it has been so worth itπŸ’š.
So much has happened, with visits from Prince Charles, Welsh Ministers, and the wonderful Martin Dorey, Crickhowell winning the Great British High Street award, and us being shortlisted for award and even winning the One to Watch Social Business award. And in between we have been overwhelmed... with the support from all the many people who have shopped with us. Your enthusiasm and commitment brighten our days and keep us motivated.
Thank you also to UnLtd and Business Wales for all their support and help. Wales Co-operative Centre

Dydd GΕ΅yl Dewi Hapus or Happy St David's Day to those of us not blessed with the Welsh tongue.
One of my favourite Welsh traditions is the Welsh cake. The recipe may be simple but I will admit to having been thwarted by these little cakes many times. Thankfully, these are authentically welsh (even down to the cook) and will be available to taste tomorrow in the shop.
Pop in for a nibble :)

They may not look pretty but I guarantee these lumpy little biscuits are tasty. Thank you to Gail for the recipe.
Luckily, we have cashew nut butter in our grinder at the moment too so almost all the ingredients are available at Natural Weigh 😁
