Neath Town Hall Description

The foundation stone for the Town Hall was laid in 1820, after it had been decided during the previous year, that the small Guildhall was not appropriate to the needs of the expanding town.
A handbook in 1852 advertising the advantages brought by the railways states Neath. . has a spacious Town Hall. . . . . . one room being exclusively devoted to the purposes of a commercial New Room where the ''Times'' and ''Daily news'' may be seen at 4 o clock on the day of publication together with the principle Daily, Evening and Weekly papers, Metropolitan and Provincial''.
By the end of the century the corn Market was converted to a public weighbridge and later to a Fire and Ambulance Station.
The rooms above have been used for public meetings and other various activities, which included accommodation for the Mechanics Institute Prior to erecting their premises, and a temporary school for Alderman Davies' pupils, Sunday Schools, (it is currently being used for that purpose) and Dancing etc. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
