Network75 Ltd is a spin out company from the University of South Wales. It was created in 2002 by its two directors Steve Thomas and Steve Lloyd. In 2007 the company was approached by a large multinational contractor to the water industry. A senior manager within the organisation had serious concerns about the number and severity of accidents that were occurring as a result of the build up of air in the water pipe network. In order to train the workforce to gain an understanding of the dangers of air pressure in pipes we developed innovative practical rigs that would demonstrate the potentially fatal consequences of not appreciating the hidden dangers that constantly reside within a water pipe network. Water Pressure TrainingThe training takes just a half a day and consists of a lecture, a pub-type quiz, and practical demonstrations. The practical sessions are the exciting elements of the training, because we have developed an air powered rocket, which can be launched up to 300m in the air using air pressure. The apparatus has been constructed from conventional water mains pipe. The other piece of apparatus is affectionately known as the Melon Surprise. Pressure Awareness TrainingTypical CourseThe course takes around 2. 5 hours and includes a classroom presentation and practical sessions. We will deliver the course where it is most convenient for your staff but some space is required to launch the air powered rocket. Learning OutcomesBy the end of a training session the attendee will be able to: •Appreciate the difference between air and hydraulic pressure•Understand how area, force and pressure interact• Identify dangerous situations and bad practice and thereby avoid accidents•Understand how relatively low pressures can potentially be fatal• Appreciate how pressure varies in different parts of a water network
