Report by Davy Rogan A quick report on the second of our boat league matches today on the Lady Karen from Portrush. The day began with the obligatory search for mackerel which, unlike last time, wasn't a stress for skipper Paul. With fish in abundance near the Skerries we filled the bait box in no time and moved on to our first competitive session of the day over rough ground. Today Ballan wrasse were in abundance quickly pouncing on our ragworm baits, coming in many times in... doubles. With a smattering of pollack and cuckoos to add variety. Some nice pollack in the 3 to 4lb range were taken sporadically with a few steam trains hooked which couldn't be stopped. Session 2 over clean ground was unfortunately quieter than the skipper had hoped as the ground had seen some commercial fishing activity in the week previous. Between small gurnards and whiting there was an occasional better dab and Al Marsden was delighted to add a big tub gurnard and 2 weevers to our growing tally of fish and species. Unfortunately then the mackerel caught up with us .... In plague proportions! At times every bait in the water was taken within 30ft of the surface. All too soon the day was over and it was time for tallying scores. Our eventual winner was Davy McCormick with Davy Rogan and John Rodgers in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Again today was a tight match with just 4 fish separating the top spots. Huge thanks again to our skipper Paul Graham of Lady Karen charters for putting us on the fish. Well fished today chaps and see you all in Ballycastle next trip!

This is what it’s all about. If you don’t look after the youngsters there will be no future for Angling . Young NIFSA angler Harry Kitson is on point with a dog quivering over the crab bait just before moving away with it. If you want to see your lad or lass getting into angling join today. Hi All Just a few words to say the Federation is going from strength to strength. We now have 160 members on the books and we are less than 6 months in! There has been some minor teething and learning issues along the way but as it stands I think it has been a really good well organised start to the competitions and meets. There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to help us achieve our rightful recognition and hopefully this should come to fruition sooner rather than later. The competitions so far have been a breath of fresh air with a lot of new and eager anglers. Keep up the good work folks and don't forget to keep pushing for new members to make us stronger and giving us a voice in Northern Ireland to be respected.

Reports by Davy Rogan Beautiful day out of Portrush today for the initial match in our boat league. Many thanks to Skipper Paul Graham of the Lady Karen for a superb day out.Federation anglers fought it out along with 2 guests of Pauls. Mackerel were hard caught today but with a few for each of the anglers aboard we had bait sorted and headed for the rock session of the match. Hard fighting pollack and wrasse smashed into the baits from the off along with a nice ling for Jami...e Horn and a superb codling for Al Marsden to add a bit of variety. After 3 drifts and sore arms we headed West to fish the sand session. It was a bit less frantic than the first session but nevertheless all anglers caught fish with a good variety of species including gurnards, plaice, dabs, dogfish, weevers and even a dragonet. After a hard fought match the eventual winner by 1 fish was John Rodgers. Congratulations to John and well done to all who took part.

Plenty of Pollack and a shortage of wrasse typified the latest specimen hunt for both. Ally Nicholl won the pollack hunt with a fish of 65cm and the honours of biggest wrasse went jointly to Jackie Moore and Harry Mckee Snr with fish of 37cm. Quite a few red cod showed in places which is a welcome sight.

Hi Folks. Northern Ireland Federation of Sea Anglers fish the second leg of their specimen hunt league this weekend and this time it is the search for biggest Pollack and biggest wrasse. Federation anglers can fish anywhere in N.I. And have from 3pm on the Saturday until 3pm on the Sunday to try and catch the biggest specimen. A really good bit of fun but also testing knowledge and know how at the same time. If you fancy having a go just go to www.nifsa.co.uk and use the contact form.

Well done to Andrew Mcilhone on winning the NIFSA June Boat and Kayak open. Andrew won with a total of 10 species from Dragonettes to Cuckoo Wrasse. Obviously those kayaks can get into the wee nooks and crannys that the boats can’t!!😄 Good to see a fair mixture of species being caught with a fair few codling and pollack going to 8lb weighed.

User

Hi All Our small boats and kayaks species hunt is on this Saturday. There’s still time to join the federation and participate. Fishing anywhere in Northern Ireland the angler with the most species wins. Join today and keep Northern Ireland’s sea angling scene prominent and strong.
