Pafiliwn Bont Description

Pafiliwn Bont was originally built in the mid 1960’s by a gentleman named Sir David James who was brought up on the Pantyfedwen farm in the village. He was a successful London businessman who owned a chain of cinemas but was determined to improve social opportunities in this home village and contributed a large amount of finance towards developing a cricket ground, snooker hall, library and other resources in the community.

He also encouraged the people of Pontrhydfendigaid to establish their own Eisteddfod, and contributed huge financial prizes. After a few years he decided to build a massive Concert Hall to house the Eisteddfod and other events. His dream was to put the village of “Bont” firmly on the map and to see the Eisteddfod held in a professional concert hall, rather than a village hall or tent. Unfortunately, Sir David James died before the Pafiliwn was opened in 1967.

Over the years, the Pafiliwn developed into an extremely popular venue for holding cultural events of all kind, attracting thousands of people from all over Wales. It was an exciting time within the Welsh pop scene, and as many as 4000 young people would regularly attend concerts in the village of Bont. The Pafiliwn would also attract more diverse events such as wrestling, television shows, theatre performances, dances and rock and folk music events.

Unfortunately with passing decades deteriorating fabric and increasing standards the pavilion became unusable in 2000. Shortly afterwards the building was damaged beyond repair by a fire. Over the last few years, a group of volunteers have worked tirelessly to gather funding for redeveloping the pavilion.

Eventually with assistance from the Ceredigion Economic Regeneration Partnership they were successful through the formation of Pafiliwn Cyf. a company limited by guarantee and raised almost £2. 4m to rebuild the pavilion in its new form. The Pavilion received Objective 1 funds to the tune of £858, 000. This money was matched by regeneration funds from the Welsh Assembly Government, Ceredigion County Council, and the Welsh Development Agency.

Work started in early 2005 and the building was ready for use for the Pantyfedwen Eisteddfod in May 2006. A successful Eisteddfod was had and all were very impressed by the new facility.
