Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Description

Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) is made up of 10 volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers (CRO's). The team is on a permanent standby to respond to any incidents tasked to by a (GCOC) Coastguard Operations Centre in Milford Haven. We are equipped to carry out coastal searches, water rescue, mud rescue, helicopter landing sites and on scene coordination of incidents.

*inc#29 - 10th June - 00:58 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to person in water and to assist South Wales Police Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan along with South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Stood down en-route as casualty pulled out of water by Fire Service and treated by Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust.

... You will be required to respond to a variety of callouts, as well as regular training sessions where you will learn new skills which include Water Rescue, Land Search, Mud Rescue, First Aid and participation in community safety events.

*inc#28 - 24th May - 01:03 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to setup, man & secure Helicopter Landing Site for Coastguard Rescue 187 inbound from Singleton Hospital with transfer paitent. Patient then transferred to Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust for onward transport to University of Wales Hospital.

*inc#27 - 22nd May - 19:12 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to 5 people cut-off by the tide. Barry Dock RNLI tasked to ferry casualties back shoreside to be met by our team. Staff at the Seashore Grill and Cafe Bar used a loudhailer to stop them from crossing the flooding causeway. All safe & well, safety advice given.

*inc#26 - 20th May - 01:09 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to assist South Wales Police Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan at the Barrage. Once on scene provided water rescue safety protection. Person safely in care of the police, we returned to station.

*inc#25 - 10th May - 16:57 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to a cliff fall near Penarth Pier outfall. On scene to find small (7 ton) rock fall, no one was injured. At present there are alot of overhanging rock with the potential to fall.
⚠️Please walk far away from the cliff base to avoid any rocks that may break loose.

*inc#24 - 4th May - 15:28 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to assist South Wales Fire and Rescue Service who were fighting a bush fire on the Island. We assisted by closing the causeway to the public until fire service brought the fire under control. Penarth Lifeboat Station circumnavigated the island to make sure all persons off the island safe & well, the causeway closed at 16.46 we were stood down and returned to station.... *inc#22 - 26th April - 12:50 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to assist South Wales Police Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan at Sully Beach, Swanbridge. Penarth Lifeboat Station & Barry Coastguard were also paged. The incident was resolved while we were enroute, all units were then stood down.

On-scene to find the “Q”buoy off the foreshore had drifted approximately 200m upriver. With our findings relayed to Maritime and Coastguard Agency, we were stood down & returned to station.... False Alarm with Good Intent.

Also tasked Gwent Police, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, HART, Severn Area Rescue Association - Newport Lifeboat Station and Severn Area Rescue Association - Beachley. Incident resolved safely, all units stood down 22:30.

Penarth Coastguard Rescue team are looking for new recruits:
Do you live in Penarth and have good daytime/nighttime availability? Would you enjoy being out in all weather's at all times of day and night?
... Are you aged 18 or over with a full driving licence?
Are you a team player?
If you can answer yes to these questions you might be just the person we're looking for. All you need to bring is enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and a sense of humour. We will provide you with all the training and equipment you'll need to become an operational team member on call 24/7.
Night time searches in a howling winter gale, water rescue, and mud rescues are just a few of the many and varied scenarios you might find yourself dealing with as a Coastguard Rescue Officer. You'll be trained in first aid, map work, SAR techniques, mud & water rescue and radio comms. The work can be physically demanding - i.e. carrying equipment to rescue sites and stretcher carries - so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

inc#19 - 7th April - 09:28 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to Sailing vessel with engine failure off Lavernock Point, with an onshore wind and their anchor slipping. RNLI Lifeboats at Burnham-on-Sea out on exercise were tasked straight to the vessel. Penarth Lifeboat Station tasked both boats to the vessel and set up a tow into Cardiff Bay Barrage to be met by our team for safety advice, both persons onboard safe and well.... *inc#18 - 27th March - 18:32 Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team Tasked to person in the water alongside Barry Coastguard, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Police Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan. The kayaker in the water was assisted out of the water by fellow kayaker. Casualty in care of Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust suffering from effects from cold water all units stood down & returned to their station.
