Pendyrus are delighted that the organisers of the forthcoming concert to be staged at the Park & Dare theatre on March 12th, the Rhondda Tunnel Society. Themselves a registered charity, have decided to donate 50% of all profits to the Rhondda flood victims appeal. Consequently the choir have decided to waive their fees and appear free of charge in order to boost the funds even further. Pendyrus, the oldest established choral organisation in Rhondda, established in 1924, and... have continued music making continuously over these 96 illustrious years. They will be joining the wonderful Lewis Merthyr Band the talented school choirs, Cor Y Cwm and Treorchy Comprehensive school senior choir for what promises to be a spectacular night of Music. Graham Clarke, Pendyrus general secretary have written to the leader of Rhondda Cynon Taff CBC Andrew Morgan, to assure him that Pendyrus will make themselves available for further events to raise money for the families in the borough who have been devastated by the floods.

The dedication from the choristers to Pendyrus really came to the fore tonight, in spite of floods landslides and high winds, many travelled great distances to get to tonight’s rehearsal. This video is an extract from Dr. Alwyn Humphreys arrangement of Nazareth which he has dedicated exclusively to Pendyrus. It has a significant connection to Rhondda Fach, an arrangement by R. Lewis, an organist in Penuel Chapel Ferndale where it was given its first performance.

The mighty sound of Pendyrus Male Choir will echo throughout this delightful theatre when the choristers take the stage for an Easter concert. Supported by a west end star, yet to be announced, they will thrill the Good Friday audience with an extensive programme from musical theatre, opera and of course some traditional Welsh music. This will be their first visit to the Atrix Arts Centre Bromsgrove and indeed their first visit to the town after an absence of many years.

Choristers,Wives, Partners and some special guests gathered in the Village Inn Whitchurch, for their presentation dinner last Friday. The event superbly organised by Mike Bostic with some help of others, including Bill Richards, Robert Williams. The evening proceedings was introduced by choir President, Sir Wynne Williams, QC. In his speech filled with content referred to the choir entering into a new era, and although there had been troubled months, change was not always a b...ad thing. This was followed by some humorous comments that brought some laughter from the congregation. Moving on to the presentations, the chorister of the year went to Mike Bostic, who travels twice a week to rehearsal from the Somerset side of the Prince of Wales bridge, quite a commitment, The chorister with the best attendance was Tony Swanee Evans, who has a 100% record of rehearsals and concerts. Finally, the best section of the choir was awarded to the bottom bass, chosen by Dr. Alwyn Humphreys MBE. who also wound up the proceedings by saying how much he had enjoyed to have played a part in the transformation period of the choir. He described the choir as a group of enthusiastic choristers, easy to get on with and had worked well during the rehearsals he had attended. With a good mixture of young people and more experienced choristers, the future under the direction od Ieuan Jones was assured. Among the special guests where, Darren and Bethan James, Brian and Elaine Greaves of international construction company, Costain, Glyn and Jonathan Davies of Glenside Printing, and Sylvia Jones JP. All of whom have supported Pendyrus and their Gala Concert with substantial sponsorship over many years.

Pendyrus would like to congratulate Musical Director, Ieuan Jones on his marriage to Megan Haf last Saturday, we wish you best wishes for the future ahead together. Ieuan will be with us for rehearsal on Monday before leaving for his honeymoon early Tuesday morning. We tried to convince him to spend his honeymoon in Tylorstown!! but alas, he had already booked a place in the sunshine before his appointment. However, taking up the baton in his absence will be Dr. Alwyn Humphreys MBE. who will be with us until Ieuan returns early in February for what will be an extensive concert programme for the coming year.

The legendary Pendyrus Male Choir commence a new era. We welcomed our new Musical Director for his first rehearsal, Ieuan Jones, Batchelor of Music, who was born and brought up on Anglesey North Wales, before taking up residence in Cardiff. At just 31 year old, a graduate of the Welsh School of Music and Drama, he has had conducting experience with a number of Cardiff Choirs including Cardiff RFC Male Choir, this in addition to being deputy accompanist to the famous Morrist...on Orpheus Male Choir. He is also an accomplished organist and resident organist in Dewi Sant Church Cardiff. Ieuan will become only the sixth musical Director in the 96 year history of this internationally acclaimed renowned choral organisation. He received a warm welcome, along with some new choristers attending tonight’s rehearsal, from some 70 members who look forward to new beginnings in 2020.

Tremendous turn out by the choristers last night, a credit to those who had traveled long distances to be there. I stood at the back of the church with the MD of the Cory Band whilst Alwyn conducted the joint item, The rousing Nidaros, and he admitted he was completely overwhelmed by the performance. The tone, and particularly the tenor tone was quite exquisite, the diction and quality of the overall performance was a credit to the name of Pendyrus. If you all turn out in numbers like you did last night. The sell out audience are going to experience a concert that will be one of the best heard in this beautiful church for many years.
