Penllergare Valley Woods (Official) Description

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you’ll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape.

It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn – a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today, it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all.

We are proud to have achieved the following awards:

Green Flag Award 2016-19
Food Hygeine Rating: 5
TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence 2015 - 2019
WCVA Environmental Award 2017
Queen's Award for Voluntary Service 2016

Grant funding helps us, but this is limited and restricted to restoration and community development projects.
We rely on the generosity of our visitors to help us continue our preservation of the woods and keep Penllergare open and accessible to everyone.
We are facing challenges meeting our basic running costs this year, so please help by making a donation of whatever you can afford. Thank you :)

Next C25k group is starting on 17th March! Free of charge and run by volunteers! (To whom we are very grateful! :) )
A wonderfully friendly group for all levels of runners and very suitable for complete beginners (the current C25K group even has a 'Sloth Group' for the slow runners ;) )

Thanks to Jan for sharing these lovely, very Spring-like, photos :) We can't believe it's only February! :o The weather is set to be very mild for the time of year this week, so it's an ideal time to visit :)

South Wales Dog Walks are holding a walk at Penllergare Valley Woods on Sunday 24th February. The walk is free of charge, but they are holding a raffle to raise funds for us :)
Open to all :) Why not reward yourself with a slice of cake in our Coffee Shop afterwards ;)

On Friday 15th February the funeral was held for Richard Morris, a founding member of The Penllergare Trust.
Richard Morris’s commitment to the saving and restoring of Penllergare arose from his family connections and a passionate interest in photography, notably that of John Dillwyn Llewelyn.
... When he learned of plans for the commercial development in the walled gardens, threatening the remains of the orchid house, it was his appeal to the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust that triggered the start of the project as we know it today.
The publication of his book "Penllergare - A Victorian Paradise" was instrumental in raising the profile of Penllergare Valley Woods to a wide audience and the profits from the book were used to found The Penllergare Trust.
Richard was appointed Trustee Emeritus in December 2014. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this sad time.

Whilst staying in Mumbles for Easter break, we found this hidden gem, via Google. Got a bit lost, looking for it, by car, but finally found you!

Took our dog, luckily she performed near bins at entrance, so no problem with poo bags! Loved wandering round, but must admit we followed the river and after a bit of going under and through trees etc, we had no idea where we were, so turned back. Would be helpful to have a few signs to indicate direction!!

It was so peaceful, quiet & beautiful. Would visit again. Lovely panini and lime cake. Great service, including dog treats!! Thanks so much x

User

What a fantastic place. Took the dogs and my 11yr old son(with his bike) for a long walk. Didn't realise how big it is. Loved the waterfalls and bridges, and even the muddy puddles that my son loved cycling through. Loved discovering all the paths, steps and the lovely fence that's being put up. Busy with dog walkers. Will definitely be back weekly with my pugs. Well done to all the volunteers who work so hard in keeping it looking so perfect.

User

Went down there with my partner and the dog. Didn't expect what I saw there. Lovely walks stunning views (and it was hammering down with rain. The dog loved it....... the two ladies in the coffee shop where lovely and made a fuss of our scared dog. And the Lime & coconut cake was outstanding 👌🏽 Will be back down there soon.

User

We went there with two families including 5 children. There was a egg hunt going on and the kids were all so excited. The park is so well maintained. There are lots of dog walkers and lots of people just having a relax time. It's a good place for a picnic. There is a cafe as well. The water fall is very beautiful. Highly recommended place to go with kids.

User

Such an absolute hidden treasure loved it so much That I can't wait for the weekend to be able to go back, would recommend for all ages with or with children. Such a beautiful place. Well done to all involved giving up their free time for everyone else to enjoy. Thank you

User

So a bit of an unusual one... I got married here, the first wedding in Penllergare Valley Woods. I can not thank Lee and the volunteers enough. They work throughout the year to make this a beautiful place for the public to enjoy. It is such a tranquil, lovely, breath taking place we could not think of anywhere better to have our union. So many of our guests had never been here before and couldn't believe how beautiful it was, right on our doorsteps to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The transformation that has taken place here over the past decade is indescribable and all down to money being raised and the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time and love to restoring the woods. Such a wonderful, welcoming place that will forever be special to us.

User

Our family love going there, lovely walks whatever the season. You can enjoy the the lakes in the warm weather and the shaded walks under the trees by the river to BlackBerry picking in the autumn. It's large enough to lose yourself in as you will always find something new there, plus there is a cracking cafe to have a well deserved cuppa in to recover from your walk. I can't recommend Penllergare Valley Woods highly enough if it's the kind of thing your looking for. We are very lucky to have such a place right on our doorstep.

User

Me and My family came here From Fforestfach on a spur of the moment day out, I can gladly say we will be coming here again, the scenery was absolutely beautiful, we loved our day out in this little slice of heaven tucked away in Penllegare Valley Woods.

User

Lovely craft fair very talented my grandsons loved it... bit shy to try making a wicker star tho even tho he wanted to, it would be nice to have more events up there esp with the festive season approaching, we had a lovely walk and spotted the resident terrapin in the water .

User

Lovely afternoon with my little monkeys. Thank you to the lovely lady who came to the rescue with a plaster for my little girl who fell and cut her knee. (before we even started exploring! Lol!) Beautiful walk - loved it! and scrumptious cream tea and coffee cake in the cafe! We will be returning!

User

It Was absolutely beautiful with the icy leaves and frozen ponds and the winter sun. We loved it just as much as the dogs did. But it could do with some bins along the path for the disposal of the poo bags. The coffee shop was lovely and the staff very friendly. Was a lovely few hours spend following the river to find the waterfalls.

User

I walk here often and have been since I was a child. Though I must say it has increased in beauty since I was a child. You can now walk through it quite easy and every time I visit you can see the work that has been carried out, making it one of the best walks in Swansea.

User

I rarely leave 5 star reviews but feel that Penllergare Valley Woods thoroughly deserves it. Visited for the first time yesterday and considering it sits right next to the busy M4 it is a completely calm and beautiful place to walk, jog, cycle or just sit and take in the stunning surroundings. I was amazed that it is kept going by volunteers, and how amazing to see what community spirit can do. I can highly recommend the tea/coffee and cake too. Truly a tonic for the soul.

User

I love these woods though sad to report that today, within 100 yds if the carpark I have kicked 3 piles of poo into bushes and picked up 2 plastic bags of poo already. Grrh

User

I have only just rediscovered this magical place after around 30 years. First thing in the morning it is so peaceful it's a fab place to just soak up nature. So it's time to explore a bit more and see every part of this beautiful place and support something local and my these people are doing a fantastic job.

User

First time to visit today. Absolutely lovely place apart from one thing.......dog mess! Why do people leave their dogs mess in such a beautiful place? It spoils it for everyone.

User

Excellent place to walk, very scenic. Really nice on site cafe, ample parking £2.00 all day. Great for dog walks. I didn't even know it was there so should be more advertised. I went there with my husband and our little dog and we all thoroughly enjoyed.

User

We visit regularly with the main reason being to walk our pup. Though he is a pet to us, he is a working breed and the mixed terrain is perfect for him.

Unfortunately, too many dog owners pick up their dogs poo but then discard the bag in the undergrowth. If dog poo bins were placed at entrances/exits and say at the stone bridge below the waterfall, I think this problem would be greatly reduced. I realise that there would be an initial cost and someone would need to empty them but could the initial cost be covered by sponsorship by let’s say ‘Pets at Home’ or ‘Pets Superstore’. I’ll leave it to someone else to suggest a solution for emptying.

User

Such a beautiful place and a slice of local history. Lovingly restored by volunteers, the woods are magnificent. The only downside for me personally was too many dogs off the leads. It does spoil the enjoyment as you're conscious all the time that a dog could just come bounding towards you as it did yesterday with us. We ended our walk with refreshments from the cafe, lovely ladies serving. As we are local we will definitely be returning more often.

Lovely craft fair very talented my grandsons loved it... bit shy to try making a wicker star tho even tho he wanted to, it would be nice to have more events up there esp with the festive season approaching, we had a lovely walk and spotted the resident terrapin in the water .

I walk here often and have been since I was a child. Though I must say it has increased in beauty since I was a child. You can now walk through it quite easy and every time I visit you can see the work that has been carried out, making it one of the best walks in Swansea.

I love these woods though sad to report that today, within 100 yds if the carpark I have kicked 3 piles of poo into bushes and picked up 2 plastic bags of poo already. Grrh

I have only just rediscovered this magical place after around 30 years. First thing in the morning it is so peaceful it's a fab place to just soak up nature. So it's time to explore a bit more and see every part of this beautiful place and support something local and my these people are doing a fantastic job.

First time to visit today. Absolutely lovely place apart from one thing.......dog mess! Why do people leave their dogs mess in such a beautiful place? It spoils it for everyone.

Excellent place to walk, very scenic. Really nice on site cafe, ample parking £2.00 all day. Great for dog walks. I didn't even know it was there so should be more advertised. I went there with my husband and our little dog and we all thoroughly enjoyed.
