About Penylan Pantry.

We are a seasonal, honest delicatessen and food store that aims to promote local producers, the environment and a healthy lifestyle. Come and say hi! : )

Penylan Pantry. Description

Penylan Pantry will be a seasonal, honest delicatessen and food store that aims to promote local producers, the environment and a healthy lifestyle. Our ethos is to support and listen to the local community.

We are a small group of friends who would like to start a locally sourced store, delicatessen and educational space at 72 Kimberley Road.

FOOD is our PASSION!

Being devoted food lovers, we spend our time cooking, prowling delis, cafés and restaurants and devouring the best of Cardiff's food scene. We are very excited about becoming a part of this culinary community whilst offering something a little different for people. We want the Pantry to be somewhere welcoming where we would choose to shop and that is accessible for everyone to enjoy and learn about good food.

Supplying Penylan and Cardiff with affordable, seasonal, local produce, the store and pantry will stock fair-trade and organic goods, with minimal food miles attached. Quality food that travels shorter distances will help support the local community and economy.

For us it is all about creating a deli experience at an affordable price.

We will be happy to take telephone orders on groceries so you can swing by and pick them up, we all live busy and hectic lives.

To complement the deli, Penylan Pantry will also offer the following:

* Gluten free, vegan and vegetarian choices

* Cakes, cookies, tray bakes and all things sweet

* Exceptional teas and coffee

* Delivery of fresh artisan breads

* Ethical & organic pet foods

* Potted herbs & plants

* Selection of rustic & locally sourced kitchenware

We will have a fresh fruit & vegetable corner; our suppliers are at the whim of the seasons so our produce will reflect this.

Unique to Cardiff, the store will also include a Book Corner dedicated to a handpicked selection of hard-to-find food, travel and sustainable living books, available to read or buy.

Our aim is to work with the strong sense of community within the area, listening to what is important to our neighbours. Being local ourselves, we fully understand this and are happy to be flexible with opening hours, deliveries as well as being open to suggestions and ideas from the local populace.

The shop itself was a grocer for a good deal of its history and we would like to continue its tradition as a community hub.

How are you getting on with Plastic Free July? This illustration by eco with em has some great tips! Is this how we coped before plastic was invented?

Every Saturday we receive a basket full of freshly baked, organic, vegan pastries. This is what weekend mornings are all about! Choose from a seasonal fruit Danish, almond croissant, cinnamon cronc and more! They go perfectly with a cup of coffee too and we have many different vegan milks to choose from too. We open at 9am! See you soon!

This wonderful photo exhibition is happening in the Bute Park nurseries garden centre right now. The garden centre is open every Wednesday and Saturday, and is next door to The Secret Garden Cafe. Its a small exhibition, but beautifuly laid out, and shows some lovely shots from behind the scenes within the walled garden. For me, the indroduction, the words and the inspiration behind this exhibition made me really understand the good work the team are putting in, and also, the need for the garden centre. Pop by, take a little look, purchase a plant and pop in to say hello to us in the cafe :-)

We love our colourful & healthy salad bowls but we equally love our unhealthy, gooey cheese on toast! You can have these for lunch in our Penylan Pantry. Our salads are made using organic & seasonal produce, our bread is locally baked & our cheese is British.

User

These tomatoes are perfectly ripe, juicy, sweet and in season. Eating food when it's grown in season, when nature intended, is when it tastes best. We'll use these tomatoes in our salad bowls here in the Pantry. If you're growing your own tomatoes, we'd love to see so post a photo below of your plants or your crop so we can take a look!

User

Champion product! We love this @Welovemanfood Korean Taco sauce. Check out our staff suggestion recipe, try it out and let us know what you think!

I couldn't be happier to have these 2 wonderful, creative ladies setting up camp in the Pantry for 1 night only. Kirsty from HomebyKirsty and Beth from ForbesField are holding a floral workshop in the Pantry. See below for more details, and link to tickets. Its been a long time since any events were held in the Pantry, it's going to be so lovely to see the space come to life in the evening again ❤️

This is a classic Greek salad made with cucumber, lush & fat vine tomatoes, olives, red onion, herb oil & the delicious, new, pickled ewes cheese from Bristol instead of Mozzarella which we sell in our Cheese Pantry in Cardiff Market. Don't just trust us, come and buy some and try it for yourselves!

User

Oh yes, this is our veggie breakfast bowl! It is stuffed with delicious homemade beans, sweet potato, organic tomatoes, avocado, marinated mushrooms, veggie sausage and toast. Only the BEST ingredients are used in our kitchen! Perfect for breakfast or brunch!

Last Tuesday we catered for Abel & Imray for their office lunch. We provided homemade sandwiches & salads, quinoa crisps, balsamic onions, olives, homemade beetroot hummus & a huge cake! We can cater for any event you have so message us!

We're trying really hard to cut back on using plastic. We've taken the no straw stand and only use compostable takeaway food containers & coffee cups. Plus we give you a discount if you bring your own keep cup or food container. This video from the BBC about the decline in the flesh-footed shearwater population shows you how plastic kills animals and is a very good reason to cut back on using single use plastics: http://ow.ly/9OlY30kJ4iT

In this hot weather our homemade hummus with silky olive oil, toasted pine nuts and smoked paprika is delicious with one of our salad bowls, with bread or for a coeliac friendly option try our rice cakes or gluten free crackers. It is also vegan. Perfect for snacking on or for a light lunch.

User

Today you can find our @cheesepantry all over Cardiff! We'll be at Roath Farmers Market this morning opposite the Gate, our stall in Cardiff Market is also open all day, plus we'll be selling British cheese at the wonderful Tafwyl Festival in Cardiff Castle all day today and tomorrow.

User

OMG! This is our picnic sharing plate from our @SecretGardenCF . It is a huge pile of delicious cheeses, pickles, hummus, breads, chutneys and more. We think it is the perfect picnic plate for sharing whilst sat in @buteparkcardiff . Mmmmm.

Went for breakfast here yesterday, the food, coffee and service here was all very lovely - will definitely recommend! :)

User

This place is so good and very high quality food so much organic goodness very impressed

User

The food in the Pantry is so fresh and tasty. The staff are really friendly and the coffee is excellent! It's such a gem!

User

The Pantry made me the most wonderful gluten free and dairy free cake for a birthday, totally delicious! Thank you!

User

So grateful for the warm welcome and fine service we enjoyed yesterday morning, as well of course as delicious food and drinks. There were 9 of us and you looked after us brilliantly. Thank you Mel and staff!

User

Popped in to try the new breakfast menu - had the haddock was blooming lovely

User

My visit was a couple of weeks back, but has stayed with me. The chai tea made with coconut milk was better than amazing, better than my daily chai latte fix. Lovely service, wonderful shops and great to see all local, organic and sustainable produce and products being sold. Hope to visit again soon xx

User

Kinda bias because I live a few doors down but I just got one of their Portuguese custard tarts and it was so good I took to Facebook to write about it! Their Scotch Eggs (both pork and Glamorgan) are also seriously tasty. I have to limit how often I visit there or I'd be morbidly obese and deep in my overdraft haha. Love you Pantry xx

User

I would definitely recommend the Caerphilly cheese and vegetable pastry roll with the delicious side salad and chutney. The slice of apple cake went down a treat, washed down with a lovely cup of smooth honey latte.

User

I think your prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality of the food. By far the tastiest salad I've had out and my husband's soup and cheese on toast was delicious. We were in such a rush as had to be somewhere and you served us very quickly. We found a little jem of a cafe today. See you in two weeks when we are back in the area. Great coffee, super lovely staff and again fantastic food! Paola and Simon xxxx

User

I go here quite a lot but it's becoming an obsession. Went yesterday for a girlie natter with my friend Sian and had a lovely afternoon and a delicious winter revitalise tea and then went today with my husband Julian and succumbed to the gorgeous gluten free cakes! Yum! I love it! It's warm, comforting, friendly and delicious!

Food is fantastic 💕 We were recommended by our daughter and it was a great recommendation. We have had the advocado on toast, cheese on toast and the home made beans all delicious. Home made cakes are lovely too🍰☕️🍴

User

Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea along with deli counter and various store cupboard items and dairy, thoughtfully sourced and prepared with commitment to the customer, the planet and the livelihood of the suppliers in beautiful surroundings. Gets a bit hard to get a table at times!

User

After a lovely afternoon and a really warm welcome,I can highly recommend this gorgeous little find Browsing through the wonderful menu I was delighted to try a turmeric and coconut milk latte which was really delicious! The fruit tea loaf with pumpkin seeds tasted lovely and was a good healthy option. Very reasonably priced for the top quality food.

User

Quality ingredients (which you pay a premium for...) and some great menu combinations but I would love to see some quality home made sausages and bacon too. Love the location and will become a regular now I've moved back to Penylan.

We have been here a number of times for brunch and we did so once again this week. As on previous occasions, the food has been delicious (made even better by their ethical ethos of using local produce and minimising waste); the coffee really was amazing and the physical environment was clean and inviting: but what my partner and I value above all else, is excellent customers service. Unfortunately, on the occasions we have visited, I cannot say we received excellent customer service. I was hoping that we had just caught the staff on an off day or a busy moment, but as this has been consistent, I don't feel this is the case. It doesn't take much to extend a smile, a 'good morning', 'see you again soon' or even just an, 'excuse me' as staff members are trying to pass in a small space, especially when there are only three tables in use. If we lived somewhere smaller, with less places to go we would probably come back, but as we know of places near by that emit a friendly atmosphere, where you feel welcomed, it is very unlikely that we'll visit again. Shame though, cause that coffee really was superb.

Being a loyal customer since it opened, I have had lunch here at least twice a week. I take people from work here all the time, and actually four of us had eaten here the day before, which makes what happened today extremely disappointing. Myself and my colleague attended and both had lunch and coffees. No it is certainly not cheap here as I have seen others saying in their reviews but the food is good. After finishing our lunch, my colleague and I were sat looking at something on my lap top having been sat at the table for precisely 1hr and five minutes. The owner came over and said that she had four people waiting to have lunch and unless we were having anything else she wanted the table. I was gobsmacked and have never been asked to leave a table like this whilst still digesting my food. My colleague and I were shuffled out feeling like they had had our money and now it was onto the next customer. The excuse was that 'they are a small business' but I feel if they continue to treat their customers like this, they will be an even smaller business. If we had been sat nursing a coffee for a few hours I still wouldn't understand this type of treatment but we had sat and had lunch each and coffee, sitting for an hour, which I do not feel is excessive.......... especially taking into account the time it takes for the food to be served. As a cafe business you need to ensure that people can sit, eat, drink and relax (you are charging enough) and if that means that you miss out on business as there is no table available, then you take the rough with the smooth........... it's the way it goes. When we sat down and our money was being taken, we were not advised that there was a time limit on the table. Unfortunately I will not be returning again and I will not be taking any of my colleagues. Very short sighted mentality. Such a shame!

User

We've been here a few times and although a little pricey the food has always been good quality and the service good. I only wanted a coffee but my husband was hungry and saw on the menu that they did 2 crumpets and butter so he went to the counter to order the 2 crumpets a tea and a coffee which he was charged almost £9 for as the crumpets where £2 I thought almost £7 for 2 drinks very expensive. I'd drunk my coffee before the tea arrived and the tea had been drunk before the crumpets arrived. When they did turn up there was 2 servings of crumpets not 2 crumpets hence why the bill has been dearer than expected. We explained that we only wanted one lot of crumpets as I am wheat intolerant and they were taken away. We were then told basically the mistake was made by the way my husband had ordered them. Not only didn't they ask if he would like the extra crumpets we had paid for they didn't offer us a refund. Very poor customer service and we will not be returning out of principle.
