Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

About Pontcysyllte Aqueduct

The Offical facebook page for Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site including the 11 miles and buffer zone. UNESCO, has inscribed Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal (United Kingdom) on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2009.

Pontcysyllte Aqueduct Description

Situated in north-eastern Wales, the 18 kilometer long Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal is a feat of civil engineering of the Industrial Revolution, completed in the early years of the 19th century. Covering a difficult geographical setting, the building of the canal required substantial, bold civil engineering solutions, especially as it was built without using locks. The aqueduct is a pioneering masterpiece of engineering and monumental metal architecture, conceived by the celebrated civil engineer Thomas Telford. The use of both cast and wrought iron in the aqueduct enabled the construction of arches that were light and strong, producing an overall effect that is both monumental and elegant. The property is inscribed as a masterpiece of creative genius, and as a remarkable synthesis of expertise already acquired in Europe. It is also recognized as an innovative ensemble that inspired many projects all over the world.

Thank you to everyone who has submitted pictures for the 2016 calender (they are incredible) in order to help promote Pontcysyllte Aqueduct & the WHS, But we are desperately trying to get more images of the 11 miles of The World Heritage Site not just the Aqueduct, even though she is beautiful! If you have any pictures at all from the surrounding WHS area then we would love to see them, the submission date has been extended to 19th May. You can post them on here or email me on peter@aqueducks.org

amazing peaceful canal boat trip ... with a wow factor at the end

User

Went over in our hired narrow boat( for the second time in 7 years ) and it still gives us chills as we cross so high up !!

Fantastic achievement for the time and a must to see and cross ( provided heights are not an issue!!) .

Thoroughly recommended .

There is a pub and tea room and gift shop at Trevor, perfect on a lovely day .

We've been here several time, en route to Snowdonia. It's a great place to stop off at but is also an amazing place in its own right. The walk across the aqueduct is not for the faint hearted and a trip across in a narrow-boat must be pretty wild!

User

We went over twice in the last few days and the views are breathtaking. I was worried about being so high up because I don't like heights but I found this OK. Just enjoy the views!

User

We went here yesterday was amazing so fun to do and the veiws were brilliant lovely sencery would advised people to go here plus its free an free parking it was very high so people afraid of hights beware

User

We parked on the free car park and left a donation (you need to charge for parking!) before heading over the aqueduct and walking the 5 miles or so to Chirk. A well priced Sunday lunch at The Hand Hotel and a walk over Chirk aqueduct and returning via the 400m canal tunnel beside a barge with a headlight to save me the risk of dropping my phone into the canal. We then walked back over Pontcysyllye aqueduct and back to the car. We loved how quiet and well kept the canal paths were and we'll be back. There were no pleasure boats when we arrived but there were a few waiting to cross the aqueduct when we walked back which was a shame. Highly recommended!

Visited today about 9am with my son. Weather was beautiful, and the visit peaceful & stunning ! Also enjoyed feeding the ducks and skimming stones by the river. Highly recommended to visit here - such a unique place 😀

User

This was on my bucket list and it didn't disappoint! Beautiful, amazing piece of architecture and a lovely place to visit. Will defiantly go back. Also the boat cafe was a lovely twist and reasonably good quality priced food

User

This attraction has free parking and the pedestrian path over the viaduct is also free to walk. There is a narrow boat that does trips across and back , but how often that operates is unknown to me. The views are stunning and the experience a rare treat. If you going with small kids then they need to be kept close and with hands held. there is room to use a buggy or pushchair. When we were there on the Sunday there was a narrow boat selling drinks and refreshments at very reasonable prices. There is also a pub overlooking the are with great views.

User

Stunning location, beautiful views! Architectural masterpiece! Very bloomin' high!! :)

User

Still being used after over 200 years it is easy to navigate once you are in it. The current is faster than in the rest of the canal as the trough is so narrow. You can then moor up and enjoy a pint in the Telford inn where the great man logded during the construction.

User

Not for the faint hearted and hold on to your kids/dog if walking across! Best to take the boat if you have too many little hands to hold. Great views if you can stand heights. Great day out for little cost.

User

Just kinda stumbled across this, end of the day so just walked over and round it and got a cup of coffee. Brilliant visit with a fantastic view

User

Had a lovely stroll over the aquaduct and walked along ty mawr country park with my dog which was a circular walk..brillant walk for children as there is a little zoo, play area and nature trail..walked to the viaducts ..refreshments and toilets and picnic area on route..popped into the pub by the canal for a drink..dog friendly inside

User

Get there before 10 if you want to park right next to the canal... If you arrive later use the car park back on main road. Stunning place perfect for a morning of exploring. Amazing engineering.

User

Beautiful aqueduct set in a lovely valley. There are marvellous views in both directions of tree lined hills and the river. Once you cross the aqueduct itself you can enjoy a peaceful canal side walk. You can either cross on foot or by barge. Thoroughly recommend it.

User

As you pootle along in a boat floating seemingly in air over this magnificent aquaduct you have proof of man's ability and consummate skill to create a masterpiece of outstanding beauty and you realise that the world is i deed a very wondrous place.

User

Absolutely wonderful.. free parking.. very rare these days.. you could put a 50p charge, no one would mind that for upkeep..

Barge cafe.. pub what more can you ask for..

Views were fantastic .

User

Absolutely stunning..lovely walk alongside the canal barges with beautiful views.. If you have small children with you, keep them close to you as there are no barriers between you and the water. There is a barge sweet shop alongside the canal also, selling icecream, drinks and old fashioned sweeties!! Well worth a visit.
