RCN has published an updated toolkit for school nurses
Dr. Susan Thomas, Primary Care, Community and Independent Sector Adviser, RCN Wales, said: “The updated publication of the RCN Toolkit for School Nurses provides an excellent framework for nurses to use on a daily basis, whilst contributing to consistency in school nursing practice across Wales. The toolkit will support school nurses in developing their roles in practice, management and leadership to improve health outco...mes for children and young people in the school environment. It is aimed at school nurses and commissioners of school nursing services to provide guidance on the scope of the school nursing role. It is relevant across mainstream, independent and boarding schools, providing links to the evidence underpinning the benefits of school nursing provision. We know that the Welsh Government is committed to increasing services and support for well-being and emotional resilience of young people. School nurses are a key part of this aim, because of their unique skills and the confidence and trust that children and young people place in them. RCN Wales supports the need for a school nurse to be employed and actively contributing to the health and well-being of children within every school in Wales. Susan Jones MBE, Lead Nurse School Health Nursing and Looked After Children Nursing Services, Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board who contributed to the Toolkit, said: “The RCN Toolkit for school nurses is a valuable resource for professionals in planning a service that meets the expectations of school nurses as outlined by Welsh Government in the 2017 document A School Nursing Framework for Wales. It provides guidance, templates and essentially raises the profile of school nurses as public health practitioners who work to ensure children and young people’s rights in regards to their health are met. This helps us to ensure children achieve their full potential and are empowered to take age appropriate responsibility for their own health and go on to enjoy a healthy adult life”. https://www.rcn.org.uk/…/publicati…/2 019/january/007-320.pdf
