Rest Bay, Porthcawl

About Rest Bay, Porthcawl

Rest Bay is one of the most popular surfing destinations in South Wales due to its close proximity to the M4 and nearby cities of Swansea and Cardiff.

On any given day, you'll find a rideable wave at Rest Bay, which is all that most learners require. The beach suffers in westerly, onshore winds but can handle south westerly and north westerly winds, provided they are not too strong.

It was beautiful down at Rest Bay yesterday evening...

User

We've had some classic days recently...

We're a family of 5, ages 11 upwards and love going body boarding there. An hour and a half drive but so worth it. Parking £2.80 all day, wetsuit and board hire in car park. Flat sandy beach, lifeguards on duty and usually enough waves to satisfy all, without any serious rip currents. What's not to like!

We regularly walk to rest bay from our home on borders of newton village Sometimes via west rd then back via town but yesterday we did reverse & walked from lighthse up. Very windy but just loved our 4hr walk.so beautiful & relaxing .the best beach the best views ever we had hot drinks in malcs cafe while taking in the gorgeous views.

User

This was our first visit and will definitely be returning . Great parking at £2.80 for the day and easy access to the beautiful beach. A must if your looking for a great beach to take the family.

Rest Bay is lovely. Is is accessible, with a walkway suitable for prams and wheelchairs for about half a mile along the coast. Otherwise, there are a number of little inlets - great for kids discovering rock pools etc. Plenty of beach to roam around and generally a lovely stretch of the Wales Coastal Path.

Rest Bay is beautifully unspoilt. It is a sandy bay - popular with surfers. There are good parking facilities just back from the main road and toilets and a decent cafe.

It's a place to watch and marvel at the surfers, it's a place to walk the dog across Locks Common, it's a place where you can sit, reflect and look out to sea and collect your thoughts. The coastal path runs alongside it too - it really is a special and lovely beach - there's rock pools and rocks for children and dogs to splash in and play on. It's quiet but lively with people swimming and surfing and walking. One of my best places.

User

Regularly go there throughout the year all seasons to surf, can get packed on sunny days.

Parking costs are very reasonable, Malc's Cafe just a thirty second walk from car park, with toilet facilities right behind the cafe.

Porthcawl surf parked up every day, for surf board, sup and wetsuit rental, just been voted best surf school in uk, say hello to Hugh the owner, he is also a qualified lifeguard, not needed his services yet, never say never.

Was annoyed that the toilets were not open 30th of January when I was down there.

User

Really great stretch of beach with great RNLI safety which meant my children paddle boarded all day and I could relax. Lots of rock pools for younger kids to play in, cafe good value and car park with easy access. Took us only an hour from Bristol so thoroughly recommend

User

Nice beach and Rock pools for the kids to explore.

Could not ask for more for a family day to the beach

User

Lovely for a walk on a blustery day, lots of dog walkers out yesterday and wake boarders. Had a hot chocolate in the cafe by the fire. Envigorating!

User

It's my local beach and perfect for taking the horse to when it's quiet.

The lifeguard crew are great and keep things in check & apart from the odd litter lout there's no better place to spend a couple of hours.

For visitors outside of Porthcawl there's ample parking, a cafe with toilets and a ramp down to the sand.

There's also surfboard hire on the carpark and it's a great spot to watch surfers and kayakers on a stormy evening

I've been going here all my life on holiday as a kid staying with my gran and later my mum and dad who retired here. A stones throw from locks common there is nothing like a walk on the beach to blow the cobwebs away. The view is stunning along the costal walk past the golf course is now complete and excellent walking on and off the beach and right down to the town.

Have spent the past 2 days here over a very busy bank holiday weekend. Much prefer the area to the other beach in Porthcawl - unspoilt, with only a carpark, cafe and toilets. Parking very reasonable compared to past visits to Cornwall beaches. Tide finally goes out at lunchtime to reveal a fantastic wide beach and watched closely by the RNLI Lifeguard team. We will definitely be back!

Great place to chill and no cheap nasty pound shops in sight fantastic, and Malc's cafe is great and dog friendly, staff are great too👍🏻👍🏻

User

Fantastic day had by all the family !!!! Rock pools, super sandcastle sand and great big waves to jump what more could you ask for !!!!

User

Beautiful scenery on a nice day. Great for family looking to go for a pic nic, swimming etc. There is a nice cafe/ice cream bar too would highly recommend 😊

User

Beautiful Beach, lovely walks on the clean sand, rock pools, safe swiming even with the serfers, children love the freedom of playing ball games, lovely cafe'and car park, and most important Toilets.

I have just returned from visiting my family, Porthcawl, happy memories from my childhood, Rest Bay so unspoiled, still the same, never changes, thats its beauty!

User

Absolutely love this beach, 1 cafe & toilets and that's it👍🏽Parking is ample and only £2.80 for the whole day....This is a great beach for surfing/bodyboarding/kite surfing as great waves but can get pretty choppy out there.....lifeguards are on duty here aswell.

Have and always will choose this place over coney or trecco, they are both great beaches but if it's the simple life you crave then this is your place.....perfect end to the day is to watch the sunset from the cliffs or just chilling on the grass

User

Great place to come to for bodyboarding, surfing & swimming. Great for kids to go rockpooling too. Good cafe by carpark. 5mins away from Porthcawl town.

User

Central to a lot of other cities, a place of beauty with a great friendly surfing community and good waves when it's working. Good parking facilities with toilets and Malcs Cafe.
