About Saunders Bakery

Established 1932 home of the Saunders Pie, known in other local bakeries as the Swansea Pie. After being closed for several months, the bakery's doors have re-opened under the management of the 5th generation of the family.

Saunders Bakery Description

Hugh Saunders had started off working at his family's butcher shop in Lougher for many years but was interested in baking so he decided to learn the trade. He worked at bakeries in Aberystwyth where he met his wife May, and afterwards in the Wembley area of London. May did not like the idea of living in London so they moved back to Landore where the idea to open their own bakery started.

Saunders Bakery, Landore, Swansea was opened in 1932 by Alfred Hitchins who owned the property and Hugh Saunders who was the main baker and son in law of Alfred. His wife May Saunders also worked there with them. Initially it was called Clifton bakery after the name of the street at the time which was Clifton Road. The street name has now changed to Pentre Treharne Road. After that it was named H. Saunders & Son and finally as we know it today - Saunders Bakery.

There was a large walk-in-fridge which was used for keeping meat and there was a side trade of a butchers being run from the shop. The bakery became very popular for it's pies and bread in particular. The trade of bread has died off in recent years as it has become commonplace for people to pick up a loaf of bread with their weekly shop at the supermarket instead of visiting a bakery. The old oven they used to have was fuelled by coke, a type of coal which was very hard to control the temperature.

Glamis Saunders, Hugh's son took over the running of the bakery with his wife Marion Saunders who started working at the bakery when she was 16. One of the big changes they made was to upgrade the oven to a new gas fuelled one in the 1980's which is still working very well to this day. They worked there for many years until finally retiring in 2011. Many of the family have worked in the bakery including Glamis and Marion's 3 sons and daughter - Paul, Nigel, Neville and Caroline. The bakery was briefly taken over by Caroline's sons, Adam and Joel, before inviting others outside of the family to get involved.

The shop has recently been taken over by Jonathan, who has other successful businesses around Swansea. Adamant about keeping with tradition and keeping the family on board, Jonathan is working closely with Joel to get everything back to the way it was when the bakery opened back in 1932. While still offering our old favourites, including the renowned Minced Beef & Onion pies, his new take on things has seen several new products introduced to the bakery, along with a modern new look to go with it
