Our astronomers have helped take a picture of a black hole BILLIONS of times the mass of our Sun, by combining 8 radio telescopes all around the world. Dr Tim Davis: "It’s been a privilege to be one of the first humans to see a black hole directly."

Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell has generously chosen to donate her £2.3m Breakthrough Prize to the Institute of Physics to support full or part-time graduates who wish to study PhD physics and are from groups that are currently under-represented in physics. The fund will be administered and managed by the IOP and supported by a panel that will review qualifying applicants and select those to be funded.
