About Scriptdawg

It's a bit ruff. . .

Scriptdawg Description

ScriptDawg is an initiative which sets out to bring new writers work in front of an audience. To achieve this, we offer five writers the chance to take on our 72 hour writing challenge. This is where writers are given a theme or topic and three days to produce a 5 – 7 minute script. The scripts are then given to three actors for cold performances.

The process:
Day 1 – The writers are given the secret theme or topic and around 24 hours to produce the first draft.
Day 2 – Writers, actors and the director meet up for read throughs, all acting as script editors. The writers are given another deadline for final drafts.
Day 3 – The scripts are sent to the actors and directors for rehearsals and staging, in
preparation for the performance.

The performances start at 7pm on the second Wednesday of every month.

The Guys:

James Humphreys - O. G. Thought father, essence, soul and spirit of ScriptDawg. Not of the actual name, however.
Founded SD in response to the lack of opportunity for writers to showcase themselves other than through script slams and competitions. But, mainly formed the company to lower my hours at the job centre.
Producer for the majority of SD's performances but consider myself a writer (USW BA Scriptwriting graduate).

Sam Rees - Host and hype man of ScriptDawg.
Sam's been with SD since the second show. Never exactly keen on theatre, he gave it a pop and realised it wasn't that bad at all. Thus far, he's had four pieces performed through the 'Dawg. Now, he's the guy that stands at the front, improvising half-baked witticisms, all misanthropic and mumbling. He likes to see ScriptDawg as "gateway theatre".
Sam chiefly serves as a producer /facilitator for the company, but first and foremost, he's a writer (he. . . dabbled in Scriptwriting at USW).

The Day of the Dawg is Over
Nothing lasts forever. Even the stars above us are dead. It's with a heavy heart that we announce that ScriptDawg has finally ceased to be, crushed under the weight of its own awesomeness. But enough modesty.
We won't drag out this eulogy. We want to thank every single one of you who supported us across the two years.
... Writers, we're going to deeply miss working alongside you all. And should any of you feel a little lost and need a little guidance, the former pillars of ScriptDawg will be more than happy to help.
Actors, you went above and beyond with the limited amount of time you had to work on the scripts. ScriptDawg seemed to slowly come to benefit the performers as much as it did the writers.
Thank you for all the memories and we hope that we were able to help you creatives out, even if it was just a little.
In this painful, unnatural, character-subverting final message of sincerity, we bid you farewell.
All the best and beyond, ScriptDawg

Our representative forgot to snap a pic our our latest batch of hopefuls, so here he is in a regretful pose.

Congratulations to Simon James and his script Igloo Bombs for winning the TicketSource ‘Best Writing Award’ at the Cardiff Fringe Theatre Festival Closing Party. We had a great time working on this project and hope to see more initiatives like this to get those shy writers from out of the woodwork! Also, a massive thank you to the actors who read for the three scripts.

Photographs provided by TicketSource of ScriptDawg’s Crash Course for the Procrastinator being spearheaded by our very own James Humphreys. DISCLAIMER: The not so impressed face that he is pulling is directed at another Dawger, otherwise he mostly has a radiant smile. Mostly.
