I like to get involved with everything related to household utilities so I am able to advise my customers from one of experience. When I was offered smart meters I agreed and had them installed. We also had the meter in the picture that we put into the kitchen and then watched it as we consumed electricity and gas. Surprisingly (irony) we noticed that when the water was being heated or the food was cooking, the gas consumption went up. We also noticed that when we had a cup o...f tea and boiled a kettle or used the washing machine, the consumption of electricity went up. This is not actually saving us money only highlighting what we already know. The question we are now faced with is, shall we have less cups of tea or wash our clothes less in order to save money. Very unlikely. The main advantage is that we no longer need to submit a meter reading as it is done automatically and from this the bills should be 100% accurate based on actual consumption rather than estimates and miss readings caused by error, or sausage fingers on the App. This is important for older people. So in conclusion, the government has insisted on a roll out for smart meters to be completed by the energy providers by 2020. As you would expect the project is behind schedule and millions has been spent on "Gas and Lecy" to get us to ask for smart meters to help us save money which is just not true, it simply highlights what we already know.

Often we find ourselves stuck in contracts that can last a year or more and a fee is charged for early termination. This is certainly the case when fibre optic and some charge a bigger fee than others when installing.
