About Acupuncture
From a Chinese perspective, human beings are born of the marriage of Heaven, the Yang, the energy that moves things; and Earth, the Yin, the material world. When this matter and energy, or yin and yang, are balanced inside us, a special life force of qi (pronounced “chee”) energy is produced and moves freely, creating a healthy, harmonious internal environment. We are then able to interact in a balanced way with the world, which is seen as the basis for a happy life.

At various points in our life, beginning in childhood, stresses, injury and illness begin to affect us, weakening our system and blocking the balanced flow of our life force, or qi. When this progresses far enough, symptoms appear which are labeled in our culture as specific diseases.

Seen from the Chinese point of view, real healing and the restoration of health and happiness will not occur unless the underlying tensions and weaknesses are addressed. These root problems are found in the five “elements” of life that make up the cycle of health: WATER – which correlates to the water, fluids and neurological systems of the body; WOOD – the growth, repair and immune systems; FIRE – the energy of consciousness and circulation; EARTH – the digestive and blood building systems; and METAL – which deals with air, inspiration, minerals and elimination.

Together we will discover the elements of your ecosystem that are out of balance, and work to restore harmony using acupuncture, adjustments in lifestyle and other Chinese Medicine techniques.

ACUPUNCTURE AS A WAY OF RESTORING HEALTH

Your life energy, or “qi” of your body (more subtle than the electrical energy it produces) runs along particular circuits or pathways called meridians, with access points that have been known for thousands of years. redlillies These pathways of energy connect both to structure, such as bones, muscles and tendons, and to internal organs, such as heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, sexual system, etc. With correct diagnosis we begin to discover where your blockages and problems with the free flow of energy exist.

Over time, even chronic and complex problems and illnesses can be unraveled as the flow of qi energy is restored by the insertion of tiny needles into the points where they are needed, reopening channels, and restoring flow, so symptoms gradually disappear. Acupuncture can also help you with emotional problems, stress and issues of the spirit such as depression and anxiety. As daily, seasonal and yearly cycles pass, your body, mind and spirit can strengthen instead of weakening, and phrases such as, “I guess it’s just aging” will disappear from your vocabulary.

So how are we fayring. I’m amazed as to how easily we all adapted to this extraordinary situation. As though we knew what to do. I feel like it’s been a sharpening of the lens process kind of thing. Doing what I always do, feeling like I always feel, except that’s become the main event. Not an after show. For some of you it’s been a major shift, for others the adjustment has been more subtle. Whilst at times it all feels really spacious, it’s not a holiday. I’ve been think...ing about immunity. What makes us immune and immune to what? We all know there are a thousand and one protocols, shared wisdom and understanding, such as how good VitC is to strengthen ones immunity and adequate sunlight or Vit D3 in a liquid form plus all the other fab things that we know makes us stronger and keep us well.
What I feel deeply resonates with my immune system, a sense of aliveness, strength and wellbeing is a sense of balance and alertness. Vigilance comes to mind. Being deeply tuned in to the Voice of God and the Song of the Earth. Following that inner resonance. Discovering the right Medicine for this time. Every day feels more sacred. There is a sense to respond to this time in an ever more respectful and responsible way.
I keep asking Spirit show me the way. Often I just know. We’re here to heal. Ourselves, each other and our beautiful Mother Earth. Make time to listen and to hear. Time’s NOW.

So here we are in lockdown. A beautiful Springtime morning. Birds are singing their hearts out and the sun is kind. Even that cold wind has dropped. A huge wave of gratitude envelops my heart, being here out in Nature at this ever so poignant time. And even though this is nothing I’ve ever experienced before I know exactly what to do and how to be; as though everything I’ve learned so far has prepared me for this. So there is a virus that affects the lives of all of us acros...s the world. Making us turn inwards and assess our resources. Come to a place of naked truth. Change pace completely. No diary no time plan. I pray that we hear the voice of God and that it’s now that it’s all so silent around it’s so easy to tune in. You know what to do. Be gentle with yourselves and your loved ones. Receive the medicine from Mother Earth, nettles, cleavers, dandelion, wild garlic, violets. Take time. Be still.

Now this is good news!
“The BAcC will not be advising that members should shut their clinics unless and until we are given clear government instructions to do so.
Acupuncture clinics are not classed as ‘social’ settings and so do not fall under the social gathering category. Your practice contributes to the health and wellbeing of your patients and at present, only you can make the decision whether to close your clinic or not, depending on your individual circumstances.
... In making your decision, you might consider any or all of the following:
· government advice · your own health and wellbeing · health of individual patients - are they exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, over 70, pregnant and or/with chronic diseases? · how patients who are over 70, pregnant, or with chronic diseases travel to your clinic · number of patients you treat · risk assessment/measures taken against COVID-19 · your hygiene practices · finances · does the benefit of treatment outweigh the risk of contracting COVID-19?
The BAcC have been advised by the London Coronavirus Response Team that it is ‘business as usual for healthcare practitioners’. They have not been closing healthcare services and have highlighted that special consideration should be given to practitioner’s health, patient’s current health and hand washing practices.
The treatment you provide could be deemed essential by many. If you are happy that you have the necessary hygiene and cleaning procedures in place and are able to screen everyone who visits your practice, you are free to keep your clinic open.”
In the light of which I am available for acupuncture appointments and my clinic is open, being mindful of utterly safe practice.

ACUPUNCTURE does matter for Pain relief
Acupuncture dose matters for pain relief Different protocols for the administration of acupuncture influence its effect on chronic pain, conclude the authors of a review from China. They reviewed 24 trials with 3461 patients, and analysed factors relating to treatment schedule (D, duration of each treatment session; N, number of treatment sessions; T, total duration of treatment in weeks) from each of the trials, relating these to pain ...relief measured at the end of the treatment period and at follow-up. The concept of ‘DOSE’, a measure of the dose of acupuncture administered, was defined by the authors as DOSE = D×N/T (measured in minutes per week). Their results showed that a lower frequency of acupuncture treatment (two sessions/week) achieved the same effect as a higher treatment frequency (greater than two sessions/week), when pain relief was measured at the end of the treatment period. They further found that a higher DOSE of acupuncture did not guarantee better post-treatment pain relief. The rate of pain relief increased slightly as the DOSE of acupuncture increased, peaked at a DOSE of 30 mins/week of acupuncture, and then declined steadily with further increases of DOSE. For pain relief measured at follow up, less time spent in each individual acupuncture session, along with a lower DOSE was observed to result in better pain outcomes. Either shortening the treatment time for each session, or decreasing the DOSE of treatment per week, resulted in better treatment outcomes at follow up. The authors also found that the rate of pain relief remained at a level greater than 20% up to 18 weeks following the end of treatment, but then dropped sharply below 10% when the follow-up period was extended further. What Is the Appropriate Acupuncture Treatment Schedule for Chronic Pain? Review and Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2019 Jun 18;2019:5281039

I spend a lot of time of late cooking for the retreats we hold here at GLANDWR. The ethos and the recipes of this wonderful article inspire me deeply. Time and again people who come on retreat here comment how the food they eat totally supports their inner journey. That is my intent when I prepare the food. I think it is vital for our health and wellbeing that we dedicate mindfulness to our food preparation. The ingredients are vital but so is the prayer that goes into th...e food, the seasoning, the colours, the presentation. Anyway the ‘ monastic table’ speaks deeply to my heart.

Another bit of precious wisdom by Brigit Anna McNeill

User

So it’s been a particularly busy and overall very joyous and rich Christmas here at Glandwr. I’m invariably always feeling an immense sense of gratitude, never mind huge sense of privilege at this time, to have a home and a family and more than enough to bring huge comfort and joy to each other, when there are so many with very much less than enough if anything at all. The turn into January this year felt very deep, almost like a steep fall into an enormous need for rest and... stillness. Maybe it was because I had been so very busy over Christmas, more poignantly though I feel an urgency to show up for my most inner Self with total commitment. This is a rest period now which offers tremendous value for the year ahead. How do we REST you may ask. For me it’s an inner state, a quietness I wish to observe all the time. Simple deeply nourishing cuisine. Soups, stews, aromatic spices, like ginger, cumin, cardamom and coriander.
Stay warm, sleep plenty, meditate often, listen deep. QiGong and gentle yoga are wonderful practices to nourish our inner reserves. This is the time to feed our kidney energy, the element of water, which when attended to adequately will ensure plenty of vitality throughout the year. I myself am often aware of how when I’m tired I may have an early night and feel right as rain the next day. In the winter it is important not only that we rest adequately do we seem so function ok the next day, but more do to refill our reservoirs, so we have some extra juice in our often do very empty tanks. Is it any surprise that this time of year the dreaded lurgis often hang around for weeks, as we simply don’t have anything inside to fight them of with. Fresh air and plenty of fluids are appropriate also. Make sure to get outside and drink enough water to prevent dehydration in overheated houses.
In the Nei Ching, the Yellow Emperors classic of internal medicine one of the classic texts of Chinese medicine it says that in the winter you go to bed early and get up late. And not to walk further than around your back yard. These recommendations may seem a little outdated, yet in their essence they give us beautiful guidance on the inner state we wish to be in during our winter months. It is in the resting of winter that we regain our strength and in the stillness we hear the voice of wisdom and guidance that will see us through the coming year. I leave you with a few beautiful lines by one of my favourite poets Rainer Maria Rilke ♥️🦉♥️
For among these winters there is one so endlessly winter that only by wintering through it will your heart survive. Rainer Maria Rilke, Sonnets to Orpheus
