Trading History

January 1st 1900

Samuel Mortimer Ash founded the shop and started trade on January 1st 1900. The original shop was a saddlers which served the pit ponies that worked the many surrounding coal mines and also provided boot repair and leather goods. The smell of leather filled the air as you entered the shop. In those days all the leather was hand-sewn and the tools of the trade can still be seen in the shop today.


1950's

Later Smash become a toy shop, which was a magical place in the 50's. Generations of children can remember being taken to the shop to pick their hornby train sets, rugby balls, cricket bats, dolls and bikes. In the 70's it also became a sports shop selling Nike, Adidas, Puma etc.

2011

These days the shop is is the 5th generation with Steve now running the shop and continue to supply the surrounding areas with quality craftsmanship
