If you are a proud owner of a Generation 2 MINI with an N14 engine it’s likely your MINI will be suffering from a build up of carbon around the valves and intake ports. The use of direct fuel injection allows for better engine performance as seen in the N14 engine. However, as a result of this, carbon builds up within the inlet valves because of oil ...breather circulation. Unfortunately this is unavoidable There are many ways in which the inlet valves can be cleaned, One of which is a full strip down of the Cylinder Head which is very labour intensive and expensive procedure. The alternative and more efficient option is Walnut Shell Blasting. This eliminates carbon build up by firing walnut shell granules straight at the inlet valves using a blasting tool. There are many advantages to this method: Speed: less labour intensive than stripping the engine to clean the Intake valves Cleanliness: The process is more effective at cleaning the end results are very impressive Cheaper: Lower price than costly Cylinder Head removal As a result of these factors and after witnessing the end results we strongly recommend this procedure is carried out every 50,000 miles. Due to the hot weather hitting the UK we thought it would be beneficial if we provided you with some usefull information on the Air con system in your car and how to keep it working as effectively as possible. If your air conditioning stops working, more often than not it can be resolved quickly and easily with an air-con regas.Most modern cars are fitted with air conditioning. It’s no longer the luxury it once was, and mo...st us expect it to work without a second thought. Gradually overtime you may find that your air-con system isn't working as well as it did when new. This occurs mainly due to the fact that many of us fail to maintain,service & refresh our air con system. Fortunately, it’s not an expensive or difficult job to keep your air-con working!!!! Air con re-gassing is the process of removing the old refrigerant gas from your air conditioning system and replacing it with new refrigerant, so your air con can run cold again. It should be the first thing you explore if your air-con system isn’t blowing as cold as it should. There could be other reasons why your air-con isn't blowing cold anymore, but here at SWSS we will be able to advise if the issue is the result of anything other than the need for regassing for example leaks. Although you can carry out a re-gas yourself it usually works out around about the same price as paying a specialist.There are also safety issues to consider for example if the refrigerant comes into contact with your skin or eyes it could cause painful freeze burns. Chain tensioner failure is a common problem for the Generation 2 MINI R56 Cooper S, it is characterised by a loud rattle noise referred to as the “Death Rattle”. This “Death Rattle” is particularly prominent when you first start your car on a cold morning. As the engine oil begins to circulate around the engine and the oil pressure builds up the oil acts as a damper and reduces the noise. One of the possible causes of this “death Rattle” is when the timing chain support rail... looses tension. When the chain is not under the correct amount of tension it is free to move around and rattle against the chain guides. This particular rail is made of plastic which over time and exposure to heat can deteriorate and eventually break. Ignoring this “Death Rattle” could have detrimental effects on the complete timing system and worst case scenario the engine. The issue affects the N14 engine found in the MINI R56 Cooper S between 2007 and 2009, and JCW’s from 2008-2012. MINI resolved this issue with the introduction of the N18 engine in the later MINI Cooper S/JCW/GP models. If your MINI R56 has recently developed a“Death Rattle” then the initial fix is to carry out an Engine Oil and Filter change along with the latest chain tensioner from MINI. If this procedure does not appear to fix the issue then the next step is to replace the chain and the guides. The reason for this is that over time, due to the lack of tension, the chain stretches meaning that even when under the correct amount of tension, the cold start rattle can still be heard. Is your MINI due a Supercharger oil change????? If there's a loud, rattling sound coming from the driver’s side area of your R53’S engine your Eaton M45 supercharger could be the cause. MINI recommend that the supercharger oil be replaced approximately every 50000 miles. With a new Eaton M45 supercharger costing in the region of £1500 is it clearly cost effective to follow this advice. The Supercharger's weak area is the oil seal in the rear main casing behind the small dri...ve gear in the power take off (PTO). The PTO is a built in gearbox on the rear of the supercharger which supplies drive to the water pump via a drive folk. The bearing oil seals fail due to a combination of age and a less than perfect design, resulting in the already small amount of oil (40ml) in its chamber being sucked out onto the rotor assembly and inlet tract of the engine. This oil is then burnt in the combustion chamber until all the oil is burnt away this is when the real damage starts. Firstly the gears and bearings run dry, overheat and literally grind the teeth away until there is virtually no tooth form between the two gears. Secondly all drive to the water pump is lost at which point the engine will overheat causing potentially highly extensive even terminal damage. Hopefully, the superchargers rattle should give you enough warning of its impending death. Please don't ignore it !!!!! Changing the supercharger oil is no bad thing, but if it has leaked out past the seal once already, the chances are it will leak out even quicker the second time around. Took my r56 into the garage for the blower motor to be fitted, had to have the dashboard off and it was one hell of a job, the staff were welcoming, extremely friendly, polite the entire time and most importantly they did a brilliant job. I definitely recommend taking your mini there!

Took my r55 into swss mini to have the timing chain tensioner and a decoke the car went in on a Thursday at 4pm and they where ringing me at 10am on Friday to say it was ready the guys stayed late to get the car done for me. Can feel the difference in throttle response after the decoke can’t fault them. They go the extra mile.

That rubbish moment when the engine light comes on and you see £££. Lovely to have an alternative to dealership on Cardiff . Dropped off car and felt he would be looked after. Job done and genuine price for the work! Will be back for MOT etc thank you

If your not going to Swss for you’re mini repairs you must be crazy! After a few visits to the garage my car is running better than ever! I highly advise this garage! Trust worthy, quick and a very decent price! Thanks again all of you! �

After the Saab main dealership in Cardiff closed I took my Saab to Gareth (SWSS) who knows them like the back of his hand. I have since moved on from Saab and recently purchased a Mini Cooper S for my partner, who incidentally loves the car, and we will be returning to SWSS when MOT and service is due. Like me, these guys are genuine enthusiasts and I love just turning up and talking to the boys about the different motors they service. They are always welcoming. RECOMMENDED !!!!

I needed a new sump thread cut on my BMW Z4 after a botched job from a previous garage (no name shaming), the car was unusable and needed to be recovered - I called up on Monday and Phil was able to get my car booked in and fixed in no time! Excellent service and a good price! I think I've just found my "go to" garage. - One happy customer.

Honesty ... if i could award a higher star rating for this company I would.

My son had a problem with the left side bumper /wing on his 56 Mini . Gareth was welcoming and very professional with his manner and reassured us that the problem could be sorted .

Within 2 hours ( and on a Saturday ) the issue was fixed.

Took my r56 into the garage for the blower motor to be fitted, had to have the dashboard off and it was one hell of a job, the staff were welcoming, extremely friendly, polite the entire time and most importantly they did a brilliant job. I definitely recommend taking your mini there!

Took my r55 into swss mini to have the timing chain tensioner and a decoke the car went in on a Thursday at 4pm and they where ringing me at 10am on Friday to say it was ready the guys stayed late to get the car done for me. Can feel the difference in throttle response after the decoke can’t fault them. They go the extra mile.

That rubbish moment when the engine light comes on and you see £££. Lovely to have an alternative to dealership on Cardiff . Dropped off car and felt he would be looked after. Job done and genuine price for the work! Will be back for MOT etc thank you

SWSS were beyond amazing. I dropped my car off last minute in an absolute panic and Phil was brilliant. He kept in contact all through the day, kept the parts that were broken and explained to me exactly what had happened and why, and confirmed everything he was going to do to my car before he went ahead with the job. He gave it back to me that evening all fixed and beautifully cleaned. They've gained a customer with me, beyond impressed! *****

Just had my Mini back after nearly a week at SWSS diagnosing a pesky coolant leak. Did a great job at keeping me informed at all times of the work, and full honest appraisal of what’s needed in the future. Will be back soon for more work!

If your not going to Swss for you’re mini repairs you must be crazy! After a few visits to the garage my car is running better than ever! I highly advise this garage! Trust worthy, quick and a very decent price! Thanks again all of you! �

I've known these guys for about 20 years. At that time I was Saab enthusiast. After the Saab main dealership in Cardiff closed I took my Saab to Gareth (SWSS) who knows them like the back of his hand. I have since moved on from Saab and recently purchased a Mini Cooper S for my partner, who incidentally loves the car, and we will be returning to SWSS when MOT and service is due. Like me, these guys are genuine enthusiasts and I love just turning up and talking to the boys about the different motors they service. They are always welcoming. RECOMMENDED !!!!

I needed a new sump thread cut on my BMW Z4 after a botched job from a previous garage (no name shaming), the car was unusable and needed to be recovered - I called up on Monday and Phil was able to get my car booked in and fixed in no time! Excellent service and a good price! I think I've just found my "go to" garage. - One happy customer.

Honesty ... if i could award a higher star rating for this company I would.

My son had a problem with the left side bumper /wing on his 56 Mini . Gareth was welcoming and very professional with his manner and reassured us that the problem could be sorted .

Within 2 hours ( and on a Saturday ) the issue was fixed.

Amazing service .

Had my mini r56 jcw decoked and had the timing chain replaced. My car feels a lot more powerful and pulls so much smoother through the Rev range!
