What Chiropractors Do

A chiropractor’s first concern is to find out what is wrong. They will also check for signs of any serious conditions for which you would need to go to your GP or to hospital.


Chiropractors are concerned with the framework of bones and muscles that support the body (the ‘musculoskeletal system’). Some problems of the musculoskeletal system can be caused by accidents, stress, lack of exercise, poor posture, illness and everyday wear and tear. These problems may cause pressure on the nerves in the body.

You will first need an Initial Consultation where a detailed case history will be taken and a thorough examination performed. You will get a Report of Findings (What is wrong /How it will be fixed /time scale /risks vs. benefits /consent) where you are encouraged to ask questions and a treatment if there are no contraindications.




What does the treatment involve?

Depending on your condition, the chiropractor
may manipulate parts of your spine or
joints and give you advice on exercise, self help, diet and lifestyle. Some chiropractors
also offer rehabilitation programmes.
Manipulation involves precisely handling or moving joints, or parts of the spine, sometimes moving them further than they would normally move.

As well as manipulation, they can mobilise joints, use soft tissue techniques, massage and stretching techniques.

The treatment you receive will be tailored to you. It depends on various factors such as the problem you present with, your medical history, your size and shape and the level of pain you are in.

The number of treatments you need will depend on:
Your condition
How severe it is
How long you have had the condition
How you respond to treatment
How much of your Chiropractors advice you follow

You will be reassessed regularly. If Chiropractic treatment is not working for you, your Chiropractor will discuss further investigations, or refer you back to your GP if needed.
