Techniquest

About Techniquest

Sensational science every time!

Techniquest Description

Techniquest is the UK’s longest established science centre.

Founded in 1986, by Professor John Beetlestone and his colleagues from Cardiff University, its first site was the gas showroom opposite Cardiff Castle (now Burger King).

In 1988 it moved to a pre-fabricated industrial building in Cardiff Bay, with 100 exhibits; it was here that it launched its education programmes for schools.

In 1995 it moved to its current site, the UK’s first purpose-built science centre, in Cardiff Bay. The building was formerly a heavy engineering plant; Paul Koralek of ABK Architects designed Techniquest around the framework of the original building.

TECHNIQUEST TODAY
Techniquest builds its own exhibits in its workshops in Cardiff. It is one of the leading commercial exhibit builders in the UK, selling exhibits and programmes to science centres around the world. This commercial activity is an essential income stream for delivering Techniquest’s mission.

Techniquest was the first science centre in the UK to have Governing Member status in the Association of Science and Technology Centres (ASTC).

Little ones and not-so-little ones just love Techniquest’s Toddler Days! Pre-school children have their run of the exhibits with activities on a special theme.
===THIS MONTH=== 📖 Storytime and Singalong 🎶 👻 Make and take: Door hangers... 🎨 Face painting 🖍 Colouring 👣 Trail
The bright colours on the exhibition floor appeal to young children, who are encouraged to explore. Techniquest is buggy-friendly, with nappy-changing facilities and lockers available.
💦 We have a water area so it’s a good idea to bring a change of clothes for the little ones.
Tea and coffee will be available to purchase from Clevercoffee. Cold drinks, snacks, crisps and chocolate will also be available. We regret that there will be no bottle or food warming facilities.
===ADMISSION=== ONLINE Under-4s: Free Accompanying adults: £5.50*
ON THE DOOR Under-4s: Free Accompanying adults: £5.70*
* Entry with donation. Without donation, online entry is £5 and on-the-door entry is £5.10. For information on donations and Gift Aid please go to https://www.techniquest.org/plan-your-vis it/toddler-days/

Rise and shine, it's time for Saturday science!

User

Watching your child’s face light up with wonder and excitement, them learning about technology and science with friendly staff and all for under £15 for the two of us. Simply amazing well done.

Visited yesterday with my 7 year old granddaughter. She had been there before and was excited. Gave her the choice of St Fagans - which she loves or Techniquest and Techniquest won! She thoroughly enjoyed herself and we spent a good 3 hours there. I must admit I thought it was quite small. I have only been there when it was in the old building and I took my children there. But to be honest my granddaughter enjoyed herself and that’s all that mattered. We had our lunch there - sandwiches, which was reasonably priced but they don’t tend to restock which isn’t very good but we enjoyed what we had. She wants to visit again so that’s good enough for me. We visited the Planetarium which she enjoyed. Don’t know why we have to pay £1.50 each for it. It was ok but would not do it again. Overall a good visit.

User

Perfect place for all the family. Plenty to do without it being over crowded or bare. Cafe is a bit pricey but on the whole a great day out.

User

My 5 year old really enjoyed himself today (So did my 24 year old partner) Also thank you to one of the workers who took me in to a side room so I could sit comfortably and breastfeed my 3 week old baby.

User

Its an interactive, hands on fun while You're learning place. The staff are friendly and happy to help out and explain things to You. Techniquest caters for all ages, from toddlers to Adults. Have Fun !!!

User

It was fantastic the only disappointing aspect of the day was lunch. It would be so much better if their was a traditional fish and chip shop around there on Cardiff Bay

User

Have been today - fab place. Lovely staff, lots to do, clean facilities and reasonably priced!

User

Great value venue to have fun with the children. Even an opportunity for parents to learn things, whilst the children get wised up!

Fantastic day at Techniquest with my 14 months old .

Couldn't get enough of it!! I remember the place as a child in the old building. Running around following my kids so they could show me things and then ask me how it works or telling me to do things(I somehow knew how everything there worked) it was great including the planetarium shows. Gift shop is rather over priced, I had to stop my children buying some things and took them to local stores where they were half the price.

User

Can't fault this place, everyone was lovely and helpful. We were on a learning holiday with our 5yr old who we home ed and thought we would go to their home ed show on bubbles and blasts. The two men doing the show were fantastic especially as it was only us and one other family in the end. They made bubbles educational and explosions exciting. My daughter continued to tell her Daddy for the rest of the day about what she had learnt. If we lived closer we would visit regularly. Thank you techniquest for a great day.

User

Took our 10yr old son & friend who loved it. Have been before so was pleased to see some new things for them to do. However some items weren't working and the cafe is tiny and messy so went to nearby pub. Overall a great day for kids though.

User

Not so many things to do as there was a few years ago but children enjoyed it.

User

Good place for a day out with plenty to do for the kids and keep them happy, and occupied. My 5 year old son loves coming here, as he has problems socializing because of his special needs but plenty of things to keep him occupied. Okay, tbh it can get really busy which affects mine and my son's anxiety levels a lot, but how busy it can get can't be helped and the canteen is a bit pricey but your allowed to bring your own little picnic and have it in a allocated area. And the staff are really friendly. But nevertheless a good place for a day out :) .

User

Was packed yesterday ...far too many people to see what was really happening ...stayed about an hour with my two grandchildren aged 6&8 ...maybe go again when it's a bit quieter

User

Took my 9 yo for Halloween. Last time I took him he was 3. I was surprised to see the same things, nothing really that new there, and some of the activities were worn out and didn't work well. We went to the Halloween spooky experience which was alright in principle, but had the driest entertainers ever which made it boring.

All in all I would say that this place is dated and has lost some of it's wow factor. It's worth a visit if you've never been but use your Tesco tokens to get in for free like we did.

User

It was a pity we didn’t have chance to watch any shows as it was only for school visit that day. The exhibit was quite fun but I think the price is a bit expensive for it was a bit small. Also it was a bit crowded.

User

I decided to go to Cardiff Techniquest with my 3 year old boy and 13 year old girl. We were all very excited, only to be disappointed at the exhibitions on offer

. I found that the majority of stances were very tired looking and some were broken/out of order. Rhys being a typical 3 year old wasn't bothered and ran around regardless but Rhi and I became bored quickly..

After Hours Adult Techniquest

Very dissapointing, event was totally oversold. Massive queues for all the ''Halloween'' activities. The ghost hunt was the only activity Halloween related with just 12 spaces each time and obviously every time we went to go by the suggested time, it was full. We managed to go to 3D chemistry lecture.. it was incredibly boring and not as exciting as we were expecting. And finally the ''can you solve the crime?" CSI investigater we just about managed to get onto. We queued for 50 minutes to go in there for it to last 15 minutes and involve sticking our finger prints on a jar.. not quite what we had in mind and not as described in the leaflets that were given out. Now my partner and I were the lucky ones to be able to get onto 2 activities where as our friends and others we know of did not get onto any.

So for future purposes here's some tips for the organiser who clearly could not organise a p**s up in a Brewery let along a p**s up in Techniquest.

1. Decorate the place.. there was nothing Halloween about it which didn't do much for the atmosphere.

2. Have more and better activities.

3. Use some mathamatic skills and don't over sell. You could spread it over a couple of days.

4. Take our tips on board!!
