About The Lluest Horse & Pony Trust

The Lluest Horse and Pony Trust is a small independant charity based in Wales and founded in 1985 to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home equines in need

The Lluest Horse & Pony Trust Description

The Lluest Horse and Pony Trust founded in 1985 is the only National Equine Welfare Council (NEWC) accredited equine charity in Mid & S. Wales. During its time the Trust has rescued, rehabilitated and found new approved Guardian homes for 100's of horses and ponies having up to 30 residents cared for on the farm at any one time.

Lluest meaning haven in Welsh, was founded by the remarkable late Ginny Hajdukiewicz who sadly passed away at the young age of 38 leaving the trust as her legacy. Nestling against the Black Mountain in the beautiful Carmarthenshire countryside, the trust is entirely dependant upon voluntary donations and fund raising activities. Anybody who gives to this charity can be assured that every penny possible goes towards the care of our horses and ponies. Our aim is to always restore our animals to full health and find them a loving purposeful loan home where they can live out the rest of there life in safety.

Many pet and horse owners may not be aware that there are codes of practice for the welfare of dogs, cats, horses (including other equidae) and privately kept non-human primates. They provide owners and keepers with information on how to meet the welfare needs of their animals, as required under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. They can also be used in courts as evidence in cases brought before them relating to poor welfare.
NEWC's Equine Industry Welfare Guidelines Compendium ...for Horses, Ponies and Donkeys first published in 2002 is now a well-respected authority on equine welfare standards in the UK. It has been widely received throughout the horse industry and has been used as a reference document for many local authorities, police forces and welfare organisations involved in horse welfare investigations. It can be found here - here - http://www.newc.co.uk/…/uplo…/2011/10 /Equine-Brochure-09.pdf

The very sweet and beautiful Hope has recently returned from her loan home. She enjoyed the attention from the junior club on Saturday morning and assisted in teaching them the correct use of pressure and release when leading. Hope was originally rescued in 2012 from a football pitch with Faith when they were just foals. They had been abandoned and left to fend for themselves, unhandled, frightened and in poor body condition.
She was lightly backed at the Trust prior to finding a guardian home predominantly as a companion. She hasn’t been ridden for at least a year, we hope to bring her back into work as time permits. Whilst in her Guardian home she was lead from another horse for exercise. Hope will be looking for her next Guardian home very soon.

We’ve been collecting some donated hay over the last couple of weeks. As we have had some ponies off of grass and in corrals and stables, It’s really made a difference to us and we are ever so grateful to Emma Pennycook for it.

Sebastian came into us Feb this year. He had a dull demeanour for a little colt, full of parasites and was very thin under his deceiving thick fluffy coat, when you put your hands on him you could feel a sharp spine and very angular bum with pointy hips. It’s very important when condition scoring that you feel the horse, pony or donkey particularly in winter when most have thick coats.
Seb is now a different young boy, although still very small in comparison to this years foals, he is strong and healthy. He has the most wonderful temperament and is proving a favourite for people with autism, he is not fazed by any sudden movements or loud noises when they are grooming or stroking him. He has also been great with children to catch, lead and groom. So for the time being we have decided Seb should stay on the farm as a therapy pony.

Thank you to everyone who has been collecting stamps for us. Our lovely volunteer Rachel has been busy cutting them all to the right size, ready to be posted off to raise money for the ponies.

The very handsome Charlie has recently returned from his foster home looking very grown up. He was born on the farm Easter Sunday 2015 to rescue mare Elsa and has been in a foster home since early 2016 along with Nel who was born just after him. Charlie will soon be starting his education to become a ridden pony in preparation for finding his long term guardian home.

Morgana is the 3rd baby born to rescue mares this year. She is a sweet shy little girl and has just started to join in with the boys. Her dam Melody is a fiercely protective mother and has to come in every day for her sweetitch treatment.

New arrivals in our quarantine unit this afternoon. A mare and now yearling colt abandoned the beginning of winter. The very kind but inexperienced land owners have made sure they were kept fed and healthy, but now need help with the unhandled colt, as he is growing bigger and stronger by the day. Luckily the mare is well handled and the clever boy followed his mums lead and travelled like a dream. Rhian has already begun making friends with him by rewarding his attention with the tasty mini #horslyx donated by Horslyx earlier on in the year.

Zazu is proving to be a cheeky boy. He spends his days playing rough with Eric whilst Morgana attempts to join in. He is a smart little boy, the second of the foals born to rescue mares this year, his dam is Sarabi.

Prince Eric the first of the foals born to rescue mares this year is growing up lovely. He was a super friendly boy from birth and his mum Ariel is also rather sweet. <3

Having had enquiries to re-home the beautiful Alana, we were noticing a suspicious looking round tummy. We also received an inconclusive pregnancy test when she first arrived, so we thought we had better ask our vets to do another test.
Results came back last week that at some point we will be expecting the birth of our 4th foal to rescue mares this year!

Cardigan Show, held on 3rd August, has two classes for rescue horses and ponies, ridden and in hand. It would be lovely to see some Lluest ponies flying the flag for rescue ponies everywhere.
Rescue classes to be judged on history, conformation and turnout. A short history (under 200 words) to be submitted with your entry, with a maximum of two photos. Marks to be allocated as follows: 30 marks for History, 30 marks for Conformation, 40 marks for Condition and Turnout.
Let u...s know if you plan to take your Lluest pony. We would love to see some pictures and hear how you get on.

Something really exciting happened on Sunday. Our longest resident Seren finally found her own Guardian home. Seren was rescued as a yearling 7 years ago after she had wondered into someone’s garden and was lucky to come to us from the council pound. She took a lot longer than others to trust us and learn how to be a domesticated pony. After watching all of her friends find their very own homes and helping many new rescues settle in, it was finally her turn. It’s very strange on the farm without her but we are still feeling over the moon for her.

As most of our supporters are aware we are a National Equine Welfare Council member charity. NEWC have released a joint statement regarding horse rescues.
We are increasingly seeing instances where well-meaning animal lovers wrongly accuse charities over social media of failing to act, resulting in rising tensions and, in some cases, leading to people taking the law into their own hands to ‘rescue’ ponies and horses which they feel charities are ignoring.
The National Equine... Welfare Council, comprised of 66 member organisations of which 35 are charities keeping equines, such as the RSPCA, World Horse Welfare, Redwings, Blue Cross, Bransby Horses, The Horse Trust, The Donkey Sanctuary and The British Horse Society who work tirelessly to protect horses across the country and for seven years have been facing an ‘equine crisis’ which has seen an unprecedented number of animals coming into their care (2295 admitted in 2018). It is estimated that there are currently 6870 horses in the care of rescue organisations, putting huge pressure on charities’ resources. We are all doing our best for horses in difficult circumstances.
In many cases, when issues are raised on social media, charities are already working, often together, to resolve the situation and improve welfare through existing animal welfare law. NEWC understands that it is frustrating when it appears well-known welfare organisations are not taking action and don’t share information about what they are doing, but there are very good reasons for this.
