The Phoenix Ton Pentre Description

The Phoenix is a community Performance Arts Theatre and Cinema located in Ton Pentre in the Rhondda Valley
The front of the building started life as the Ocean Collieries, Maindy & Eastern Workman’s library and Institute in 1895 and cost £4, 000 to build.

On the ground floor was the newsroom, refreshment room and caretaker’s room. First floor was the library and committee room. In the attic, were two bedrooms and store rooms. In 1904, the Workman’s Hall was attached, providing a stage and hall for concerts and entertainment. ‘Animated pictures’ were started in 1908. The hall was converted to a cinema in 1931 with the installation of the ‘talkie machine’. Due to the local mine closures the hall fell into decline in the 1940’s. It became known as the Ton Pentre Workman’s Hall after WW2.

Films were shown until 1971 when it’s last film was Countess Dracula, starring Ingrid Pitt. After 1971 it became a Bingo hall which continued until 1989 and it was then left derelict until 1991 when it was bought by RCDA. (Rhondda Community Development Association). RCBI Rhondda Community Business Initiative was formed in 1990 and re-opened as Phoenix in 1991. In 1996 it was listed as Grade 2 by Cadw.

Today over a Century later we are still running strong with Spectacular performances from various local theatre groups and local schools use the Theatre as the venue for their productions.

After a small hiatus now in association with FILM HUB WALES and BFI Film Audience Network we are proud to be showing an excellent selection of the biggest and best Hollywood blockbuster movies and along with Independent Cinema’s finest movies a selection of which were produced right here in Wales and across the UK.

We are currently showing movies everyday (Closed Sunday)

Our policy as a community cinema is to provide a comprehensive programme of unusual, modern and challenging films, catering to all ages, including films supported by Film Hub Wales

... Still the Enemy Within (2014)
'The Enemy Within' is an award winning documentary that gives a unique insight into one of History's most dramatic events: the 1984-85 British Miners' Strike No experts. No Politicians. Thirty years on, this is the raw emotional story of those who drove Britain's longest strike. The film weaves stunningly edited archive footage of the strike and never before seen interviews with the real key players of the strike: the miners themselves, accompanied by a soulful, timely soundtrack. It is ultimately a universal tale of ordinary people standing up for what they believe in. It challenges us to look again at our past.

Blue Scar (1949) - 2 showings only on Monday 9th March 2:30pm and 7pm.
Directed by Jill Craigie - in a small South Wales coal mining town a young coal miner competes with an Englishman for the love of a young Welsh girl
Supported by Film Hub Wales as part of the BFI Film Audience Network (FAN). Revisit the past to understand the present. #madeinwales @Filmhubwales and in celebration of International Womens Day 2020 (8th March)
... JILL CRAIGIE was not Britain's first woman film director - there had been several in the silent days, notably Dinah Shurey, while early talkies included films directed by Mary Field, later head of the Children's Film Foundation, and the authoress Elinor Glyn - but Craigie was the first to achieve a combination of critical acclaim, publicity and wide distribution. She was also the first to bring a consciously political and feminist viewpoint to her work. The wife of the politician Michael Foot for the last 50 years, she continued throughout her life to be a champion of left- wing causes and was prominent in the world of politics.
