The Ship Inn Description

The Ship Inn is one of those pubs that take your breath away when it comes into sight. The location is perfect, overlooking the beautiful Red Wharf Bay on the northwest coast of Anglesey. Facing east on the lee side of a hill, it is protected from the prevailing winds and catches the morning and afternoon sun perfectly. It is difficult to imagine a better place to enjoy gourmet food and real ale, whether it is taken outside at the picnic tables or inside in the cosy bars or restaurant areas. The whole place exudes charm and warmth and the friendly, helpful staff just reinforce the feeling of calm and relaxation.

Red Wharf Bay itself is a quiet spot with superb views and is an excellent base for walking or discovering the delights of Anglesey by car. It's just a short drive from the main road, yet could be miles away. All this makes it the perfect year-round retreat.

We look forward to welcoming you soon.

The History of the Ship Inn

Originally known as the Little Quay (Cei Bach), the pub served ale to the many sailors who passed through the port. It was later known as the Old Quay, before finally becoming the Ship Inn. At the turn of the 20th century, the Ship Inn was kept by Emma Capon, a single woman, originally from Liverpool, who lived with her brother John and his wife Ellen. The current proprietors, the Kenneally family, have run the pub since 1971.

The original structure is largely unchanged except that the adjoining cottage on the right has now been absorbed into the pub.

About Red Wharf Bay (Traeth Coch)
Traeth Coch (Red Beach in Welsh) is the older of the two names and, according to some accounts, dates back to a bloody Viking battle that took place here in 1170 and left the beach soaked in blood.

The name Red Wharf Bay dates from the 18th century when the bay was an important port - difficult to imagine today as it is such a tranquil place. Records of trading through the port go back to the early 15th century and continue up to the advent of steam power. Small sailing vessels would bring in cargoes from all over the world and many foreign sailors are known to have settled in the area after marrying local girls.

Although the rapid tide changes and shallow waters were a difficult to navigate, experienced sailors could guide large vessels to the excellent natural shelter at the end of the bay.

The main commodity imported was coal, offloaded at four coal yards, one of which was close to the Ship Inn. Exports from Red Wharf Bay included local minerals and grain.

Shipbuilding carried out on a small scale, with eight ships being built here between 1766 and 1840.

Shipwrecks

Red Wharf Bay witnessed six shipwrecks, the first, the Maria on 26 October 1859, in a severe gale that claimed 223 vessels around the shores of Britain. The Sarah disappeared in February 1873 , the Jane & Ann was wrecked in 1885, and the Rapid wrecked on 30 June 1890, the William in the 1900s and the Salazar, which was abandoned in 1971.

The inevitable demise of Red Wharf Bay as a commercial port

The arrival old steam ships and the railway network gradually reduced the importance and viability of Red Wharf bay as a port and the small wooden sailing ships were seen no more. Today it is frequented only by small yachts that take advantage of the quiet, sheltered harbour mainly during the summer months.

What a hidden gem in red wharf bay -cosy with all log fires lit great food and such a lovely warm welcome from the staff.a special place indeed.we are going back soon and will t take some friend's with us xx

User

We have just eaten here and the meal was superb from start to finish. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and efficient. A great dog friendly pub with superb views. Highly recommended.

User

Nice food and fantastic location. Highly recommend the fishcakes, Crisp, Light, Tasty and not overly 'fishy'. Nice, friendly staff. No excessive wait despite several people ordering food at a similar time.

User

Lovely spot right by the bay. Staff all very friendly and accommodating. Food excellent. I can recommend the strawberry and feta salad, and Mum really enjoyed her fish and (proper) chips

User

Just had a lovely dinner in the ship, dogs are allowed in one part of the pub. Great kids menu too. Lovely way to to relax on a weekend away.

User

I think after 54 years of visiting Red Wharf Bay and the Ship Inn,I can honestly say that the good old Ship is must for us.We have booked evening meal for Thursday so see you again then.

User

Had an unplanned lunch so as to escape the heavy rain. The staff were excellent and very pleasant. There was an area for dog owners which was a good size and perfectly adequate. Food eas great and so was the service. Heard nothing but positive remarks from the customers in there. Would definitely recommend.

User

Great pub and apparently lovely food, we arrived in between food being served but that’s our fault. Great location parking a bit cramped.

User

Fantastic food, beer and very friendly staff. Lovely spot to enjoy as well!

User

Fabulous old worldly pub, terrific food and really friendly staff.

Right on the bay - fantastic walks - with a great pub to relax and have a pint in after. Good quality beers on offer.

User

Lovely views, while stopping for a drink But my god they stung us on the drinks £4.20 a pint of Carlsberg

User

Lovely location great place to enjoy the sunshine the tide was out when we went so my kids were happy to play on the beach. it’s a bit pricey (4.20 Carlsberg) but apart from that a great place would come again

User

Very disappointed with the meal, I had the roast sirloin of beef. The beef was extremely tough, the roast potatoes were nothing like roast potatoes, the were flaky and very pale. The vegetables were also past there best. I sadly had to leave nearly half of it. Sorry to give such a negative review, but was so disappointed

User

I love this place have frequented it on many occasions . It’s always our first port of call when on holiday.

Yesterday was a an exiting day for us drove from Cheshire . Picked up new car in the afternoon Went to Benllech Bay water was so warm we were all in dogs included . There was no question where we were going to next . I normally have their home made c delicious chowder . Should have had it last night as I was sadly disappointed with the special main dish . The hot salad was delicious that accompanied the shark which unfortunately in my opinion in hindsight was underdone and very sinuey and tough .

The service was great and friendly and I will be back in September . The food has always been exemplary. Sorry about the moan .

User

A lovely quaint place but expensive. We had to pay £6.10 for two regular diet cokes. I think it's over the top.could buy six bottles for that.

User

Very disappointed as it looked as a nice pleace, liked our table by the fire place, nice and cosy but that's about it. The baby high chair was way too old fashioned for my liking and main thing is don't think it would pass safety requirements . The food was overpriced for what it was and the cherry on the top was we ordered our desserts, waited 30min and they never came....they forgot! I would try to understand if the place was packed but it was nearly empty...

We went to the Ship for a family meal while we were away for my mums 50th. I rang ahead and pre booked for a table of 9 & paid a deposit. When we arrived we were seated in the "children's area" on dirty tables, still with used plates and glasses on which we had to clear ourselves. Some of the tables and chairs were dangerous, they were falling apart. I had to ask for a highchair numerous times before one arrived, when it did it was not suitable and dangerous.

We ordered our food (no table service) and within 15 minutes 9 main meals arrived, from this it was quite clear nothing was freshly cooked.

The Sunday roasts had to be the worst we have ever eaten, the chicken was like sawdust, and the beef was unrecognisable. The potatoes were grey and dry, and the veg was boiled to within an inch of its life. It was obvious the roast elements had been sat there for a very long time. Even my 5 year old said it was "disgusting".

The philli cheese steaks could've been used as flip flops, they were completely inedible.

Even the Neptune fish salads were appalling, smelly, slimey smoked salmon, tinned mackerel, just awful.

The only meal that was edible was the fish and chips, even that wasn't hot.

We were given a refund and were told everything was cooked fresh in the mornings... seems a long time for a roast dinner to sit around.

Could be a great pub, but lack of investment in the pub and it's furnishings, atrocious food and poor staff are to blame for its shocking offering.

Will never ever return, and would encourage others to not waste there hard earned money here.

We have just been spoken to very rudely by a man who clearly needs to be mindful of his customer service skills. We frequent the ship inn monthly on our visits to red wharf and we have spent many an hour watching the world go by having a drink here. Today, we have been spending time on the beach area in from of the ship inn and had some snacks with our children .... only for the rude man to tell us we are ‘eating and drinking’ on private property (never mind the fact we had previously bought a drink from the ship that day) and then when we challenged back asking where the signs where to suggest such private land/rules of the land he told us we were not welcome and not to come back. Never have we been spoken to In such a rude and passive aggressive way by a barman. This guy needs to A) mind is manners and B) think about his environment and C) think about the more important things that are going on in the world.... disappointing behaviour from a senior man who should know better

I never normally leave a review unless I’ve really enjoyed but I’m so disappointed I feel the need to!

We called in for lunch today really wish we hadn’t as I’ve felt awful since.

We had booked a table, young lad behind bar looked at us like we had 2 heads when we walked in and said we had a table booked?!

The food was over priced, deep fried rubbish which I wouldn’t have fed to my dog.

The fish cakes were battered, deep fried and the inside didn’t resemble fish at all, I still can’t get rid the vile taste - and I only had two tastes!

My husband had the worst steak sandwich I’ve ever seen! Smallest bit of meat, of which most was fat covered in cheese!

Only plus side was the child’s meal was edible and the bread with the starter was ok.

£52 wasted - would not recommend!!
