Angel Prichard Hotel on Cross Street. The now image is with it's Christmas Tree which seems a good time to wish all followers of this page https://www.facebook.com/Abergavennyshire / a very Happy Christmas & a prosperous New Year. The Prichard comes from the owners name who was John Prichard, also note the lovely little Stables sign on the left (replaced with an AA sign) as it was originally a coaching house where the Mail Coach used to stop on route, also the Cycle Touring Club plaque (now gone), see one here > https://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ó┤¬ÓĄŹÓ┤░Ó┤ «Ó┤ŠÓ┤ŻÓ┤é:Old_CTC_sign.jpg #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny

From one wet day at the cattle market, fast forward to, another wet day at the same location in Morrisons car park. From Landrovers and farmers of the Welsh Black Cattle Society selling their animals, to the cars of the customers doing their shopping. Plenty more similar comparisons here> https://www.facebook.com/Abergavennyshire / Original image from the National Library of Wales. #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny

The Gunter Mansion and it's part in the horrific execution of Catholics. On 20 November 1678 he issued a proclamation for the immediate arrest of all papists and Jesuits. The Government offered a reward of ┬Ż20 to any person who could provide information about priests and Catholic families, which opened the floodgates resulting in many turning in their neighbours. John Arnold added ┬Ż200 to the GovernmentŌĆÖs reward, determined to rid the area of Catholics. This led directly to th...e arrest of the Jesuit priests Philip Evans and David Lewis. Both had held mass at Gunter Mansion and both were arrested by the end of the year. Lewis was arrested in Llantarnam on November 17th 1678, a Sunday, and was taken to the Golden Lion Inn in Abergavenny for his preliminary hearing, and after remained in custody until March 28th 1679. On this date Lewis was taken to Monmouth to be tried, and acted as his own defence but was thus found guilty. Despite having the opportunity to save his own life by divulging information about any plots against the King or if he would give up Catholicism for Protestantism, Lewis refused. Consequently, Lewis was taken to Usk gaol to await his execution. David Lewis became the last Catholic martyr in in Wales, and one of the last in Britain, when he was hung, drawn and quartered on 27 August 1679. He is said to have addressed the local crowd and said, in Welsh, ŌĆśI was condemned for reading Mass, hearing confessions, anointing sick, Christening, preaching and worshipping God. For religion I die.ŌĆÖ Full information on their website here > http://www.welshgeorgiantrust.org.uk/proj ecŌĆ”/gunter-mansion/ #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny

Sayce's Restaurant with it's Bermaline Bread (want to know what that is ?) click this link > https://www.flickr.com/photos/eastlothian /3507282432 to Codfather's 'chippy', Fish Bar & Cafe so amazingly the building is still used to feed hungry locals and visitors, long may it continue. I'd just like to add I did this 'Then & Now' awhile ago and it's purely coincidence a similar posting has appeared in Abergavenny Voice earlier this week! Look at those lovely Frogmore Buildings with the photographers inside them, now an empty Prezzo building and they lasted about 5 minutes before shutting up shop! #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny

Not sure what's going on here, might be the Coronation, the Eisteddfod, a fancy visitor or other but what I have noticed is, oddly that window on the building on the right has been moved further towards the back of the shop yet still kept (no mean feat either), I wonder why. #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny

From the start of Abergavennys Free Library (if you look through the scaffolding you can see the terrace of houses on Baker St) until as it is now and what a superb building it is. I have heard rumours though, that they are looking to close it down which would be a great shame seeing as it was purpose built for the town. Built 1905 and designed by B J Francis of Abergavenny. Paid for by the Carnegie Foundation at a cost of ┬Ż4000 although Andrew Carnegie refused the invitatio...n to open it. It was opened by the Marquis of Abergavenny and the Lord Mayor of London on 8th September 1906. The beautiful and magnificent Llyods Bank Building on Cross St was unbelievably extended in size in 1933 but you would never tell just looking at it. Built first in 1895-7 and designed by A E Lloyd-Oswell and purpose built as a bank. The bank was later increased in size from one gable to two in 1933. The Jacobean/Domestic Revival style is an eclectic mixture, as if influenced by both Richard Norman Shaw and George Skipper of Norwich. The first part built is to the left (No. 55) which had one gable and two oriels. The only sign of the differing parts now visible is the slight variation in the first floor brickwork. Hard to tell now but this was the entrance to Brecon Roads L&NWR Railway Station that opened in 1862 and closed in 1958. It used the Heads Of The Valleys Line which crossed the road on that bridge you can see however the line between Brecon Road goods yard and Abergavenny Junction remained open for goods traffic until April 1971. Now on the site of the old railway station is the local doctors surgery.

This is a sad one as there's no more swimming or fun and games at Abergavenny's Lido in Bailey Park sadly now it's just grass and graffiti however hopefully it's going to make a return if funds can be raised. ¤ÅŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤ÅŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤ÅŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤ żĮŌĆŹŌÖé’ĖÅ¤ÜŻŌĆŹŌÖé’ĖÅ¤ÅŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤Å ŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤ÅŖŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ Latest info here> http://www.abergavennychronicle.com/artic le.cfmŌĆ” https://www.facebook.com/AbergavennyLido/ ... #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #AbergavennyLido #Abergavenny

This was King Henry Grammar School VIII from 1542 ~ 1898 where I believe they used to suspend naughty children in a cage outside the tower as a punishment! I think it's now part of the Masonic Lodge. #ThenAndNowAbergavenny #Abergavenny
