USW Fashion Design graduate Paige Leach has started a six-month internship at Givenchy in Paris, after winning the Givenchy x British Fashion Council Fashion Design Competition.
"As a creative perfectionist, I'm usually too hard on myself, and I don’t always believe in my abilities. However, this opportunity has changed all of that. I put every part of me into my submission. Through the experience, I see something in myself, as a designer. I now view my work and individuality through a positive light." ❤️👏

Mature student Brian Marling, left school at 16 to work in a cosmetics factory for 22 years, before facing redundancy. He’s now a mental health nursing graduate who’s already secured a role at the Princess of Wales Hospital.
“I never thought about higher education until I became redundant ten years ago. The mental health-nursing course has given me a positive outlook on life. I now have career options, and the future feels exciting.
I’ve been lucky to find a job on Ward 14 as... a staff nurse, at the Princess of Wales Hospital. My new role means I can continue to learn and develop confidence in the nursing profession.
My university experience has been hard and challenging. However, the sense of achievement I feel is immense.
My advice to other mature students is to have faith in your abilities and to accept there will be times when you doubt yourself. It’s important to remember you’re not alone, seek help from personal tutors, lecturers and academic support services, all of whom want you to succeed.
There’s a mix of emotions in graduating. Pride at what I've achieved and nerves for the day. Most of all, I feel excited as graduation is the pinnacle of the student experience."
Congratulations Brian 🎓🎉👏

“Graduation feels slightly unreal. Within days of beginning the course, almost every lecturer told us time would pass quickly. They were right! Suddenly we've finished."
Congratulations to Hilary Dyer, a Bachelor of Nursing (Mental Health) graduate, who has landed a professional role in the NHS.
"The last three years are a product of great lecturers, supportive peers, fantastic placement mentors and colleagues, the patient, understanding clients I’ve encountered, and my fabul...ous family and friends. My time at University has increased my self-confidence, helping me to build on my abilities.
I was surprised when I won the student of the year award last year; it meant a great deal. However, the thank you letter my team received recently from a client, who said that she felt cared for, supported, and treated with dignity and respect, was fantastic. To be part of a team that received such praise is a privilege.
Qualifying as a mental health nurse has enabled me to accept my first position as a professional within the NHS - something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time.” 🎓🎉👏

Dr Mike Chick has been named the University of South Wales’ Refugee Champion, a position created so that staff across the organisation can have a single point of contact for all questions regarding interactions with students and applicants who are refugees.
“Global migration is growing, and refugees can face many obstacles to accessing higher education.
Language issues, unfamiliarity with application procedures, and providing evidence of previous qualifications can all be pr...oblematic for people who are forced to leave their home.
There can be a lot of misinformation about what is required by refugees, and what can be offered by higher education institutions.
The Refugee Champion will be able to give staff across the university the information they need to ensure that all students have access to all that USW has to offer.”
