An exciting IET Public Lecture for all you astronomy fans: Colliding Black Holes and Neutron Stars:
Detecting Gravitational Waves with LIGO and Virgo by Dr Laura Nuttall, University of Portsmouth
... The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) consists of two 4-km gravitational-wave detectors in Hanford, WA and Livingston, LA, along with the 3-km Virgo detector near Pisa, Italy. These three detectors use laser interferometry to measure tiny ripples in space-time caused by passing gravitational waves from cataclysmic cosmic sources. To date six gravitational-wave signals have been detected, five from the merger of black holes and one from the collision of neutron stars. This latter signal was the first to be spectacularly observed across the electromagnetic spectrum, opening the era of multi-messenger astronomy.
In this talk she will discuss the challenges of making these first detections, both from an instrumental and analysis viewpoint, and the exciting astrophysics they have uncovered

Our students learn many things apart from computer programming. As his final year project Ruaidhri, one of our third year students, is designing and building a Lego robot that will be able to solve the Rubikā€™s cube. As part of this heā€™s first had to learn how to solve the cube himself. With that success under his belt, he can now start work on the robot. :)
