About Vale Of Rheidol Railway

The Most Scenic Steam Train Journey, between the coast of Aberystwyth & up into the Cambrian mountains to Devil's Bridge.

Vale Of Rheidol Railway Description

From the comfort of your carriage watch the scenery passing by. See the countryside change as you travel through wide open fields, woodland and rugged mountain scenery, the line twisting and turning as it clings to the hillside. Listen to the sound of a historic narrow gauge steam locomotive working hard to climb the 700ft (200m) in the 11 ¾ miles from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge.

Birds of prey such as Red Kite and Buzzards are regularly seen soaring high above the valley floor and breathtaking views can be enjoyed by all.

Then & Now...
Our very first Facebook post back in March 2011 showed Diesel 10 prepped and ready for a repaint.
It is now back in the works for another freshen up, you can see one of our apprentices 'Ieaun' and one of our painters 'Niall' getting the engine ready.

Our skilled engineers ‘Ifan’ & ‘Ted’ are creating copper ferrules ready to begin fitting the roughly 150 small tubes into the boiler for Garratt NGG13 No.60.

User

Diesel 10 is in our works currently to have a bit of TLC. Here our engineer ‘Aled’ is assisted by our Chief Mechanical Engineer and Railway Manager ‘Llyr Ap Iolo’ to remove the torque converter and clutch assembly from the caterpillar engine, so it can be sent for specialist attention.

The frames for Baldwin 4-6-0T have been painted in undercoat this week by our apprentice ‘Ieuan’ ready for work to get underway preparing the chassis for assembly.

Work continues on the boiler of the Garratt, in the foreground the new tubes can be seen ready for fitting. Each of the tubes will have its ends polished prior to fitting, one of our Apprentices ‘Josh’ can be seen starting the process.

User

Work is progressing on assembling the new large components for the Baldwin 4-6-0T we are restoring on behalf of the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway. We have test assembled the new water tanks, temporarily bolting the parts together prior to fitting of tank furniture and then riveting.

Ioan Lord's 'Rich Mountains of lead' is receiving some excellent reviews. Available via our shop, it is a highly illustrative masterpiece that documents the history and of the mines of the Rheidol Valley including many modern colour photographs
available via our shop 01970 625819 and https://the-vale-of-rheidol-railway.mysho pify.com/…/rich-mo…
Some recent reviews:
... This is a remarkably impressive book by a young author who has entirely mastered his subject. His enthusiasm for his home patch is matched only by his knowledge, and the production quality is very high. Altogether a superb publication and highly recommended to anyone with an interest in industrial history.
A superb authoritative and exceptionally well researched account of the history of mining in the Rheidol valley area.. Magnificent collection of photographs both contemporary and historical which give an informed insight into the hardships of mining in these remote areas. Worth every penny.

For the first time in the privitasation era all three 'Rheidol Tanks' will be in steam hauling passenger trains at the same time, the first time this has happened since the mid 1980s.
The event will also feature three mystery visiting engines which have not been on public display before.
With a special timetable in operation, an event not to missed.

Yesterday (September 16th 2017) was the first time that I took a trip on the Vale of Rheidol Railway as part of their 1920's and 1930's weekend and it was absolutely marvellous. The staff were exceptionally friendly (both on the train and at Devil's Bridge), the carriages were spotlessly tidy and the other people taking part were just as friendly. If you are able to travel on this (one of the Great Little Trains of Wales) then please take as many cameras as you can carry, as you will want to relieve the journey every day there after

User

What a little treasure this is. Stunning route with breath taking views along the way. We paid the 1st class upgrade ( £3) on the trip up to Devil's Bridge and came back in the open carriages both offered perfect photo opportunities. The staff, what can I say? Our guard had us roaring with laughter waiting for the trip back to Aberystwyth and the staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Nice touch that as the train left Aberystwyth the staff came out to wave us all off.

We spotted a couple of books at Devil's Bridge my partner wanted but sadly they weren't in the Aberystwyth store. No problem, the books were popped on the train and we were able to collect. Perfect!! Thank you all for a truly wonderful experience

User

What a brilliant family day out , although expensive it is well worth and value for money considering the distance you travel compared to other steam train journeys like Merthyr railway , we throughly enjoyed and the stay were very welcoming and courteous.

User

We recently used this train, the views were lovely and we had our dog with us too. This is well worth the money and the trip between the Aberystwyth and Devils Bridge was about an hour through lovely countryside views.

User

Visited last week whilst in Aberystwyth. I wasn't the warmest of days but I took a trip in one of the open coaches. The views were absolutely stunning as the train wound up the narrow track to Devil's bridge. One word of caution if you do choose to ride in an open carriage be aware of coal smut, which is an obvious occupational hazard riding behind a steam engine! (I unfortunately wound up with some in my eye...ouch!). Absolutely worth a visit if you're in the area, friendly staff and an experience you wont forget :)

User

This relaxing journey through some idyllic landscapes on a sunny day would be simply breathtaking. But on a mid November's afternoon we ascended above the carpet of cloud that was simply magical. Coupled with a lovely walk around the devils bridge and waterfalls and a restorative Welsh tea at the two hoots cafe this was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

User

Thankyou so very much for such a magical train ride today.

From Mrs clause reading us a fantastic story to actually meeting Santa AND a beautiful present, it was worth every penny to create something so wonderful for the children.

I can’t begin to think how much effort and preparation goes into organising all of this but we are very VERY grateful and this will be the first of many years to come xxx

User

Thank you to all the team for making our family feel so welcome. Very enjoyable day out.

User

Rode up to Devil's Bridge with friends on Tuesday 26th June. A spectacular journey with stunning views. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were looking forward to the return. Unfortunately this was cancelled due to a fire on the line which was still burning days later. All the staff were very friendly and sociable. The Two Hoots Café serve a great burger. Anyone holidaying in the area should make time to do this journey. Thank you Vale of Rheidol Railway for a great day (even though we came back by bus).

User

Initially seems a little expensive, for a family of 5, however once you experience the amazing scenery and friendly and ever so helpful staff it instantly becomes worth every penny. Carriages are clean and tidy, Engines considering are in use are a credit to VORR, Thanks for a great time everyone.

User

Couldn't have asked for a better day to have travelled on the Vale of Rheidol Railway steam train from Devil's Bridge into Aberystwyth and return.

As we travelled along the ridge of the Rheidol Valley we marvelled at the breathtaking scenery of the valley below. Put this together with sitting in an open train carriage, the toots of the whistle and the steam pouring out and the chugging of the train and you have the recipe for an wonderful day out for everyone. Was great to know that our driver, trainee driver and conductor were all in their early 20's and really enjoying what they were doing. Thank you for a great day out.

User

Child and dog friendly - and funny, chirpy conductor made my daughter laugh! Lovely views and comfortable ride but a little steep price wise, for a family of 3 and their 2 dogs at £45. Still, a nice way to end purple last day in West Wales on holiday!
