Midweek Mabinogion (8)
The Cauldron of Rebirth (Second Branch of the Mabinogi) Margaret Jones, watercolour, c.1984 Courtesy of Margaret & Gareth Jones (On loan from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth)
... The Welsh gave a magic cauldron to the Irish as part of the dowry when Branwen married Matholwch, king of Ireland. The cauldron has the power to restore the dead to life, although not the power of speech. When the Welsh meet the Irish in a series of battles, the Irish use the cauldron to revive their dead warriors – the drawing shows them climbing out to fight again. Branwen’s half-brother, Efnisien, sacrifices his life in order to break the cauldron and to atone for all the trouble he has caused.
The 'Land of Legends' and a cauldron are currently on show in Gallery 3

Midweek Mabinogion (7)
Bridging the Shannon (Second Branch of the Mabinogi) Literal translation of the original Welsh title: Let he who would be a leader, be a bridge Margaret Jones, pen and ink, c.1984... Courtesy of Margaret & Gareth Jones (On loan from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth)
Brân leads an army of invasion across the sea to Ireland. Matholwch, king of Ireland, desperate to slow down the invading Welsh army, destroys all the bridges across the rivers. Brân stretches his giant body across the River Shannon allowing his army to walk safely across.
Normally you have to read those self-help guides that are on sale at train stations and airports to learn such leadership ideas. The storytellers of the Middle Ages were there first (not counting the Ancient Greeks and Romans, of course).

Branwen’s Messenger (Second Branch of the Mabinogi) Literal translation of the original Welsh title: Branwen’s starling Margaret Jones, watercolour, c.1984... Courtesy of Margaret & Gareth Jones (On loan from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth)
Matholwch, king of Ireland, takes against his young wife, Branwen, after three years. He banishes her to work in the royal kitchens and prevents news of her situation from reaching her family in Wales. Branwen trains a starling to carry a message detailing her plight to her brother, Brân. The starling reaches Brân at his court at Aberffraw on Anglesey.
The Margaret Jones illustrations appear in the Land of Legends exhibition

Midweek Mabinogion (5)
Branwen, daughter of Llŷr (Second Branch of the Mabinogi) Margaret Jones, watercolour, c.1984 Courtesy of Margaret & Gareth Jones (On loan from the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth)
... Branwen (left) is the sister of Brân the Blessed, High King of Britain. The ships belong to Matholwch, king of Ireland, which are sailing to Wales on a mission to claim Branwen as his bride. The black raven alludes to the two main characters in the story, Branwen and Brân. The violent consequences of this marriage form the main plot line in this tale.

Well worth a visit. The exhibits were well laid out in a welcoming building with warm and friendly staff. We had very nice refreshments in the entrance conservatory which was bright and cheerful. This was our first stop, having arrived by train. The visit to the museum set the scene for the remainder of our day in Wrexham which went really well. The cafe in the museum was also our last stop on the way back to our outward train.

My 5 year old son absolutely loves it here!

We come quite often, and never bore of it. Plenty of hands on activities, such as dressing up and games.

Staff are always friendly and chatty, which ensures we go back time after time. Another bonus, it's free!

User

It was a good display and activities for the kiddies, despite the awful weather. Lots of people coming to visit, hope they visited town too ? I think some folks expected more, but having re-read the adverts, you got what was described. The opportunity to have your photo taken in the dragon's claws was a nice touch, and i noticed even some grown up's doing this . Overall great effort Wrexham 🖒

User

Only just called in for a little while. Didn't really do much while we were there but plan on returning as I bileve they have different activity's for the kids :) . xx
