The name 'Bro Edern' refers to the saint who is commemorated in the name Llanedeyrn. Of the three Welsh-medium secondary schools serving Cardiff, it is the newest (the others being Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr). In 2015, 70% of pupils aged 11–15 could speak Welsh fluently, with a further 30% being able to speak Welsh but not to a fluent standard.
