Advert in the local paper about one of our own 💪🏼❤️💪🏼
PERSONAL trainer from Redditch who has had to undergo two open-heart surgeries will be doing his first 10k run in aid of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) next month.
Scott Francis, who prides himself on eating healthy and staying fit, was shocked to discover he had heart valve disease at just 22-years-old.
... The condition meant Scott’s heart was unable to pump blood effectively which resulted in blood leaking back into his heart.
This meant that Scott became short of breath quicker than normal as his heart had to work even harder.
Scott underwent his first operation in December 2011 and had surgeons replace the leaky valve with a mechanical one.
Following the procedure things were looking good for Scott who appeared to be on the road to recovery after getting back into playing football.
But in August 2013 he noticed a change in his fitness levels and after undergoing various tests it was confirmed that scar tissue was blocking the new mechanical valve.
Scott had to undergo heart surgery again in 2014 but has since recovered.
“My initial diagnosis came as a shock because I was physically fit, rarely drank and never smoked.
“I had recently qualified as a Level 2 Fitness instructor with a passion for health and fitness – so this is the last thing I thought would ever happen to me.”
The British Heart Foundation estimates that there are 650,000 people living with the cardiovascular disease in the West Midlands alone.
Around 13,821 people in the region devastatingly losing their lives to conditions including heart disease, stroke and heart failure every year.
The BHF funds research into conditions, including heart diseases, stroke and vascular dementia, along with their risk factors including diabetes.
Each year, the charity funds £100 million to find cures and treatments for these conditions.
Donna Stokes, BHF’s Fundraising Manager for Birmingham and Solihull, said: “Scott’s story highlights that heart disease can affect anyone, young, old, male or female and the physically fit.
“It also shows what a long way we have come in the treatment of heart disease.
“The BHF helped to establish the first Coronary Care Unit in this country and provided funding to surgeon Mr Donald Ross to devise the first successful surgical technique for replacing damaged heart valves.
“These techniques are now used worldwide today and have increased the life expectancy of thousands of people like Scott.”
Scott will be running the the Handsworth Park 10k run on September 16.
Visit www.bhf.org.uk/handsworth10k for more information.

User

Was dreading joining a gym again after a fair bit of time away from exercise, but have loved my first couple of sessions! nice to go to a gym where you can genuinely feel comfortable! staff on reception are helpful and happy and big thank you to PT Scott who has made me feel like I can do this! have paid a lot more for gym memberships in the past and not felt as at ease, determined to keep it up!

User

Staff are all very friendly and welcoming to the centre.

I love the variety of classes and do on average 6 a week plus swimming and use the gym.

But it’s the community that I really enjoy, as a direct result of being part of the centre I have really loved spending time getting fitter and being able to do things like Wolf Runs which I would never have entertained before joining the Abbey.

I would and have recommended it to many people.

User

Really enjoy the gym, first time I have ever been & staff very helpful and kind my instructor Martin made me feel at ease & asked if I have any questions so that I knew what I was doing.

The only thing I will say is the swimming pool needs to be warmer I found it quite cold & ended up going in the learner pool for some warmtb

User

My son has swimming lessons and thanks to abbey stadium he can now swim over 1 mile at 8yrs old. I use the gym all staff are helpful, instructors are knowledgeable.

User

If you want to do Les Mills classes led by fantastic instructors, this is the pace to be!!! And as a bonus, you get the use of a gym, pool, sports hall, cafe...just a great place to get fit whilst socialing with some great people - staff and members.

User

I visited it today on entry to the pool 2 people were cleaning the changing area, and when I was leaving another member of staff was putting down a bucket of diluted diss detergent, never seen anybody walking around the pool in trainers and I've been every day for the last 2 weeks, I agree about the pool but last two weeks been like a sauna.

User

I joined the gym in October to help me loose weight and tone up I can see a big difference in myself I can't do alot of classes had a knee replacement in March but what I do is bodybump and legs bums and tums the instructor are amazing they work hard to make peaple injoy exercise x

User

I have been to a few gyms over the years and I have to say this is by far in a league on it's own, brilliant equipment and studios, and when it comes to the outstanding instructors and classes well you will be so spoilt for choice and love them all so much you will end up cramming as many in as you can so you don't miss out on them ... I have been going just over a year and thanks to all their help, support and passion in what they do I have lost 6 stone and have a healthy me back again... this is not just a gym it's a lovely community made up from the brilliant people who work their and the lovely people who go.

User

Excellent session, very good instructor, Hope this will help with my race training needs.

User

Came on a 6 week get fit for summer trial and really enjoyed myself. I have now become a full member and I can really see myself toning up and the weight is starting to come off. Staff always really helpful and friendly and the guys in the gym always push you hard which is great. Thanks all

User

Brand new studios with skilled and amazing instructors . Emma Land and Philip Harrison are one of them. If physical and mental health with added fun is what you are looking for - this is the place for you .

User

All the instructors are great and the new studios & spinning room have improved this venue dramatically!

My favourite class is Thursday night circuits 6-7pm, led by the legend that is Mr Martin Carver! He encourages you to work to your personal limit. You are in competition with no one except yourself & you "get out of it, what you put into it"!

User

Yet again another machine broken!!! For how long this time? Is it completely acceptable to have machines out of order in an already overcrowded gym for months at a time. Sorry, poor effort and I wish someone on reception would smile in the mornings and say hello. Thank god for Cathy the cleaner who goes out of her way to say hello and chat. Consider your options before joining. At least until some money is spent on clearly outdated and old dangerous equipment.

User

Only went to a combat class and the instructor was brilliant! Loads of energy and teaching of technique was spot on! I'd not been before and the young man who showed me the way was just rude and had an ego about him. I'll defo go back as the class was well worth it!

User

My kids have swimming lessons at they are normally brill, but today it was a different instructor this one made my son cry after telling both of my kids off for something they didn't do. I complained to the manger and all he said was the instructor is young and might not have people skills.

User

Generally I love this place, however there are certain things that let it down. Just been to a yoga class that I booked a week ago, there was no instructor and no one seemed to know what was going on. This isn't the first time this has happened to me. It's also very difficult to book classes as you have to phone in, this is hard to do when you're at work. I have to take the day off just to book the class as I normally phone between 15 and 25 times before I get an answer. I was promised in September last year there would be an online booking system very soon!! Come on, fantastic facilities, some of the best instructors in the Midlands let down by poor organisation, communication and empty promises. Gutted I've taken a day off work and wasted it at the hands of Springs.....again!

User

At least 3 lockers broken today oh and the toilets and broken dryer not to forget the lack of baby changing dry side

User

Very unpleasant! Water not warm enough and changing facilities not clean enough. 5th week in a row I can't help notice that nowehere actually looks clean, doors in and out of changing rooms and between pools, lockers and around the lockers, shower cubicles, tiled walls, changing cubicles, the lot! just cancelled the rest of the swimming lessons for my daughter.

duty manager didn't seem to care, and the pool attendant insisting they do clean, should probably learn some customer relations skills before speaking to irate customers in future. And receptionist claiming that it's 'permanent dirt', surely it wouldn't be if it was actually cleaned properly enough to remove it before it gets so ground in! Really not good enough for a public facility.

User

Took my my baby swimming today to find of again that the learner pool was closed checked their web page and Facebook page and where nothing stated its closure. This isn't the first time it has happen. It takes ages to get a baby ready to go swimming if you plan a head and check time and opening you should keep find out when you arrive that it is closed and for a council pool the price customer serive and information available is absolutely shocking not coming here again...
