We were a table of 5, celebrating our wedding anniversary. Got there early on Saturday evening, restaurant already over half full. I love Akbar’s as it’s always a great atmosphere. Food was delicious, however a couple of our party found the food a bit too spicy. My chicken and mushroom balti was delicious, the chicken literally melted in the mouth. We shared a family Naan which was more than enough for 5 of us. Waiters were attentive, I would definitely recommend!

One of the best restaurant experiences- warm welcome on arrival, butler-like service from Kamal (hopefully spelt this correctly) and tasty fresh food. Amazed at the naan bread which has to be seen to be believed and very generous portions. Had to have a doggy bag as we were unable to finish our meal. Next time we won’t have a starter!

Me and my boyfriend went for the first time last night and can honestly say it was the best Indian place we’ve been too! We were seated and seen to super quickly and food was absolutely beautiful and prices were really good too! All the staff were really friendly especially our waiter Charlie who was very friendly! We are definitely returning! Highly recommend!

Fantastic service, staff incredibly knowagble and friendly. Naan bread was fantastic and beautifully presented, if i had to "moan" my chicken and prawn vinderloo was too dry but otherwise brilliant.

We had to wait for our food a long time service was slow food was amazing but we had to wait a long time and slow service and the Waiter split the drink on the table

I wouldn't recommend this place for a large group on a Saturday evening!! 14 of us went for a Birthday meal. The seating they allocated us was lovely, an alcove which gave it a private party feel. Sadly the service was not good. They really didn't seem capable of coping with so many covers. Some of the food was very nice but VERY inconsistent even to the rice!! I sat between 2 people that both ordered egg fried rice & each dish looked TOTALLY different!! One was the BEST I've ever seen/tasted with lots of egg & fresh coriander, the other just fried rice!! Most disconcerting!! The worst was one person's meal was missed off the order totally - even though they read the order back to us........ when we complained they said it had already come out & went looking up & down the table to see if someone else had it!! How rude! This was SHOCKING! We are all friends & family & no-one else ordered that same meal anyway! Eventually this Dish arrived after most people had finished their main course!! There was no apology THEN when the bill came that meal had been put on it TWICE!! 😱. It is a huge restaurant very close to the city centre so seemed the ideal place to take a large party to, but while they have the space to accommodate big groups they seem to lack the ability to serve them!! On the whole the food was not particularly outstanding but good & well presented! There were particularly small condiment portions; we are used to much more generous amounts at our local restaurants & they are replenished free of charge!! The family Naans are amazing & great fun though!!! Birmingham being the heart of Curry has so much competition that I would choose a smaller Indian Restaurant on the outskirts of Birmingham to house this party again, where I know I would get better service & probably more value for my money -

Food was really good, service was bad. Asked 3 times for a jug of water, only got it when I went up to the hatch and asked for it! Went here on a recommendation, would go again for the food but definitely not the service! Staff were chatting amongst themselves in view of customers and wondering around like they needed security or something. Took over half an hour for our main to arrive, despite telling the waiter we were ready for it and him assuring us it was ready when we were...obviously not! Barely any personal space due to tables being so crammed in. Spoke to the manager after, he seemed sincere and we've said we'd come back for the food but definitely not the service! That being said, if anyone knows any decent Indian restaurants in Birmingham I'd be happy to try them next time!

Very disappointed with my experience here, the waiters who bought the meals over were rude and had no service at all, practically threw the dishes at us and left, never checked to see if everyone had what they ordered or if anyone needed anything.

Secondly my tikka masala was very spicy and had hardly any sauce, masala is known for its mild creamy taste but the one they served me was dry, bitter and just tasted like coriander with a burnt aftertaste to it.

I've heard nothing but nice things about this restaurant from people who have been so I did have high expectations , I know this is a busy place but that doesn't excuse the lack of service from the staff.

I may point out that the guy who originally took our order was very polite it was just the kitchen staff who served the meals that seemed to have a bad attitude.

This is the 2nd time I've visited, first time being many years ago and the service and food has gone downhill..there was 10 of us and we were only given 3 glasses..after asking for glasses twice we still had to wait until I actually demanded for them..the samosa chaat was too salty and the seekh kebabs were too dry and hard to chew..their high chairs are not safe to use as the safety belt is broken..the prices on the food is extortionate and the only good thing I have to say is the waiter happily brought my own cake out for my 3 year old and the table next to us clapped happy birthday which was nice of them.. Never going back again!!

User

The starter- the kebab was too chewy. The samosa was way too done and very hard to dig into and break. Not much of a salad other than lettice. The main chicken currys were quite bland for me. The vegetable curry was too salty. The desert gulab jamun came with ice cream (which is right) but also with whipped cream? Didn't quite understand the concept! The service was poor as we had to continuously ask for cutlery and the removal of rubbish from the Xmas crackers. Couple of colleagues had not even quite finished eating and their plates were just taken off them without even asking whether they had finished! Not a place that i would visit again.

User

The Akbar restaurant and environment is really good, the service was ok but the meal was really disappointing I ordered chicken tikka masala main, all I got was a bowl of chicken. When I asked where the sauce was in the curry they took it away, when the curry came back it tasted like they had just tipped hot water and stirred the chicken food wasn't nice at all, also me and the 20 people I went with will not be returning.

Not much choice of food for kids, very loud music (not for the elderly), Dark and dull.

Food was ok but could have had more flavour.

Overall I would not recommend for families especially those with elderly and the young.

Akbar’s is not what it used to be! Really disappointed with our experience there last night!

We were a large party (pre booked) and it was clear the waiter could not cope. It took about an hour for him to take our orders, then all the starters & mains came out together! It was complete mayhem.

We had to ask numerous times for drinks etc! The food wasn’t great either!

To be honest my husbands 30th birthday celebrations turned into a complete shambles and to top it off the waiter then asked my husband if he was ready for his cake! (which he obviously had no idea about)

Considering there was a car park attendant, you wouldn’t expect there to be people loitering around the entrance smoking cannabis!

Totally different experience from when we went before! Won’t be returning put it that way!

User

Staff are rude and acted like we owed them something when really they should be friendly and helpful . Ordered the tikka masala which was dry and horrible . Very expensive wouldn't mind the price if you got what you paid for .

User

Salty as fuxx never again ordered garlic chilli lamb all I could taste was salt no garlic not even chilli Sal salt salt never go again I did complain but the manager came with bad excuses no discount I could have caused a scene but not worth showing myself up for do your self a favour & have a Mc ds instead

User

Low quality starters which were not very hot, as if they had been cooked and left to cool. Local takeaway does better starters!!! Presentation of the starters was third class. Found a hair in my food. Did not provide any sauces until asked for midway starters.

The main course was much to be desired about, no effort was made with the dishes.

Presentation was poor and service was rubbish, they were all over the place, apologising for silly mistakes.

For a restaurant that has won “restauranteur of the year” previously, I had expected much better. The seating arrangements made me feel as though I was a battery chicken awaiting slaughter. The food itself is extremely low quality and it tasted as though I was eating a bunch of basil and nothing else. The wines are extremely expensive. Our plates were almost thrown at us and we were originally given food we did not even order. Our waiter had also demanded a tip at the end of our meal and was incredibly pushy, tips are complimentary depending on service, it is NOT compulsory. Judging by your previous reviews, this isn’t the first time that guests have been spoken to rudely by your staff either. Since your staff are so keen on requesting tips, I have one for you, a fully functioning door lock wouldn’t go amiss, as it is not pleasant seeing a grown woman with her trousers down doing a dump. There are absolutely no hand-dryers in the ladies toilets meaning that your hands are uncomfortably wet. I have asked the manager to get back in touch with me and still no sign. Just incompetent and unhelpful.
