What is veterinary physiotherapy?
In todayโ€™s society it seems to be the โ€˜cool thingโ€™ to call yourself a veterinary physiotherapist. I appear to meet new veterinary physiotherapists around every corner... great that the industry is growing!! Unfortunately, when delving deeper into โ€˜someโ€™ said new peopleโ€™s educational background, findings can be a little concerning. โ€ข Iโ€™ve read a chapter in a book on Equine/canine โ€˜massageโ€™, so I can now heal my animals. I am now a physio...! โ€ข My friend bought some kinesiology tape and watched a video on how to apply it... itโ€™s great, she has healed my horses suspensory injury. She is now driving around the countryside applying it to all of her friends animals. โ€ข I heard about someone using a TENS machine on a horse... I have now got one and am showing others how to use it. โ€ข I am an equine manual, holistic/multifactorial therapist... great..How did you train? Answer- online!!
Our industry is brilliant, and one that I am truly passionate about. Please be cautious when it comes to picking your practitioner!! As veterinary physiotherapists, not only do we understand manual therapy (massage techniques/palpation), electrotherapy, remedial exercise prescription and rehabilitation programmes, we also understand the science that lies beneath them. We understand the clinical reasoning that lies behind pathology. We understand the importance of working with our amazing vets. We donโ€™t try and pretend we can re-invent the wheel. We simply apply our evidenced based knowledge to a scenario, and clinically reason our way around it. We then get good, safe and reliable outcomes. We have studied for years... and carried out hours of clinical placement.
