After 2 weeks of frantic closing down sale activity, and a week asleep to recover, we'd like to thank everyone for their good wishes on our retirement, and for their custom and support over the last couple of decades. As we are now 'permanently closed' this page is likely to disappear in 7 days, so if you are hoping to come and choose from our remaining tree stocks, please make a note of our email and phone numbers now so that you can continue to make contact after that time. Thank you.
Last call for garden bargain hunters! Our sale is nearly done; we'll be closing the gate for the very last time at 5pm on Sunday; if you want to bag a bargain, don't hang about!!
After approaching three decades in the business, it's time to hang up the trowels ...
Looking good on the nursery - Hydrangea 'Vanilla Fraise'. Huge blooms open white, then fade to a clear pink. Very floriferous, and the blooms last right into autumn, even looking good with a dusting of frost!
Looking good on the nursery - Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight'. Flowers open lime green, fade to white, and finally deep pink in the autumn. Blooms make excellent cut flowers, and clearly love this weather!
Looking good in the garden (but also in pots on the nursery!) - Crocosmia 'Lucifer'. Clumps of robust pleated sword-like leaves, up to 4ft tall, topped in mid-summer with sprays of probably the reddest blooms you'll ever see. As if all that wasn't enough, it also has the RHS Award of Garden Merit, which means it's a good do-er!
Goldfinch babies...in a tree, at head height, on the nursery, on one of the most frequented paths we have, and yet hardly anybody notices!
Looking good on the nursery - Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' just starting to come into flower; the blooms will be much larger and rounder as the season progresses. The blooms are excellent cut flowers too. Various sizes available, starting at £15.
Newly emerged foliage on Catalpa bignonioides - what's not to like??
Had a bit of a flood last evening, which has all but gone this morning, but the downpour that caused the flood has left the plants looking wonderfully clean and turgid....
We've grown Argyrocytissus battandieri (pineapple broom) as a wall shrub for the first time this year - plants about 6ft tall, for training on trellis or wires, ideally on a south facing wall or in a sheltered spot in the garden. And they're flowering! And yes, the flowers do smell of pineapple!!
The hawthorns in the hedgerows are looking rather wonderful right now, and those on our trees aisles aren't looking too shabby either - this is Crataegus laevigata 'Paul's Scarlet' photographed this afternoon.
Tree paeonia - the flower is about about 6 inches/150 cms across; does this count as blousy ?
The primulas are looking lovely....
Laburnum 'Vossii' on the tree aisles this afternoon - 12 Lt pots, £39 each.
Looking good on the nursery - Crataegus 'Crimson Cloud'. An easy and robust tree, growing to only around 20ft, so will fit in most gardens. Lovely white centred blossom in spring, followed by red haws in autumn. It has the RHS Award of Garden Merit, so it must be a good do-er! Plants in 12 Lt pots, £45 each.
After a really slow start to the season, finally the plants are catching up with themselves, and we have COLOUR on the sales benches!
Looking good on the nursery - Laburnum 'Vossii', photographed this morning in our tree aisles. Prices from £39 (12 Lt pot).
Thank you to Louise at Barlow’s for the spending the time with us creating a beautiful planting plan for our garden.
Louise marked out the area at the nursery, discussed what we liked, looked at some different plants then filled the area expertly with waves of colour, height, interest and those all important “fireworks”.
Looking forward to seeing the area blossom and mature. Thank you Louise and Nick for a great service 👍
Louise and Nick are fantastic at recommending plants to meet our needs! They have just helped plan out three new borders and supplied us with excellent quality shrubs and trees. I can’t recommend enough the friendly and professional service they provide! The setting alone is inspiring. Thank you once again!
