About British Motor Museum

The World's Largest Collection of Historic British Cars. With over 250 classic cars on display in Warwickshire.

British Motor Museum Description

The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts nearly 300 cars in its collection which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras.

Situated in the small village of Gaydon, Warwickshire, just off junction 12 of the M40. The Museum building is a spectacular piece of architecture with an art deco design, whilst the Collections Centre building is a modern contrast. Together they stand proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting of 65 acres, which rolls out onto the Warwickshire countryside.

THE MUSEUM STORY

The Museum opened in 1993 as the amalgamation of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust’s preserved car collection.

The Trust decided that the car collection and artefacts were outgrowing its then two locations, Studley in Warwickshire and a museum in Syon Park in London. A dedicated purpose-built residence was needed to give the collection pride of place and open for public viewing.

It was the Trust’s mission to keep the memory of the British motor industry alive and to tell its story to all, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century to present day. So a building was designed that not only housed the cars and its extensive motoring archive, but also had educational and conference facilities thus ensuring its sustainability. The Heritage Motor Centre, as it was first known, opened in May 1993.

New temporary exhibition at the British Motor Museum!
Today, 7 paintings by urban landscape artist Sarah Moncrieff, have been put on display outside the Museum's Café for visitors to enjoy until the end of September.
The exhibition is called 'On the Move' and is part of a series of paintings Sarah did at the BMW factory in Oxford (formerly British Leyland). The paintings feature the production of the Mini, interior of the factory and the Jaguar Land Rover plant (which she co...mpleted ‘live’ during their open weekend in May).

#Justforfun answer: 2000 Mini Cooper the last ‘classic’ Mini
The Mini was launched in 1959. For the 41 following years the Mini firmly established itself as part of British culture. Its creator, Alec Issigonis’ design was revolutionary and it set a trend for the small car which all others followed. It not only attracted the eye of the family but that of many a celebrity.
... The Mini became an image of Britain’s ‘swinging ’sixties’ and is an international icon of style and design. It has been a successful racing car and film star too and many a driver can regale stories of their motoring experiences with a Mini.
This Mini is the last car of the classic style to be manufactured. Rolling off the line at Longbridge on 4th October 2000, it is one of 500 special edition models built to celebrate the final batch of Mini production.
More than 5½ million Minis had been built before that, selling to every part of the world. In a final flourish, pop star Lulu drove the car off the production line, in front of workers and press.
The car was presented to the Trust on the 6th December by the Deputy Chairman of MG Rover. It is a fitting complement to the first Mini-Minor, which is also in the Trust’s collection.
Engine: 4 cyl, 1275cc Top speed: 87 mph [140 km/h] Power: 63 bhp

In this week's Flickr Friday we look at the excavation of the Wolseley Gyrocar 1938.
Sometime after the completion of the car Count Schilovski returned to Russia and the Wolseley Company turned its attention to the First World War effort. Instead of allowing it to take up vital storage and, as the Count had not made any effort to claim it, it was decided that the Gyrocar would be buried. The vehicle was interred in the ground for a significant number of years until it was ex...humed in 1938.

#DidYouKnow this car also featured in the 1984 film Greystoke, The Legend of Tarzan starring Christopher Lambert.

well laid out, great displays and very helpful staff. On holidays from Australia and it was one of my highlights of holiday

User

Went today for a look around and was so impressed. The number of vehicles on display is phenomenal. They represent so many aspects of motoring history from those that I went "oh I had one of those" through to "blimey, didn't think any of those still existed. The number of prototypes, one off's and truly special cars is amazing. Look for the Metro Van that was the prototype for the MGF. Oh yes. Kate Middleton's wedding car. Princess Diana's personal car and so much more. So much history, and the volunteers on duty add so much to the experience as well. So welcoming and helpful, I was overwhelmed with the amount of information they added to what was already on display. Most definitely will be going back and I'll be bringing friends too. More need to see this place. Its brilliant.

User

We went to Wellsbourne Market for the day, then as we were leaving wasn’t sure what our plans were, then as we driving towards home, we decided to pop in before the museum closes. Just a fabulous end to the day we had, love it every time we come here, I love all the old cars, how they were made, which cars were first etc etc, just so good to be able to look back at what was on the roads before to what’s on the roads now. Amazing day.

User

We went on Saturday and spend 4 hours. It was a fantastic day out. Excellent museum with brilliant collection of British classic cars which are set out in like type groups with an informative history board about each vehicle. If you interested old cars you must to see this museum!!!

Definitely we will be back!!!

User

We visited yesterday with my 3 year old and 10 month old and had a great time.

The staff could not have been more lovely and helpful- they found me a quiet room to bf my easily distracted 10 month old and made a fresh children’s lunchbox for my 3 year old in the cafe as they were running low, bringing it straight to the table for us. They also had a staff member giving out activities for the children (a treasure hunt or secret mission) which my lo loved. On top of this they had push along mini coopers which my little boy thought was amazing. There were activity tables and interactive displays throughout.

The cafe had a great selection of hot and cold food with lots of seating and the ticket allows us to go back any time in the next year.

I’m not into cars but the displays and activities were pitched just right. We spent about 4 hours there. If the weather is nicer there’s an outdoor play area too.

I didn’t know it was there but will definitely be returning.

User

We stopped at the museum to break up our journey home... I like cars, but my partner and son (4) LOVE them- especially Jaguars and Land Rovers. They were in seventh heaven! Everything was so well planned and thought through, I was nervous my 4 year old might be bored with the ‘no touching’ I anticipated but it is so hands on, he didn’t get a chance. We participated in the Easter egg hunt which was great and made a little car too - not sure who liked that but best, my partner or child!

I can’t recommend the museum highly enough, we ran out of time and only wished we lived closer! Excellent value for money and top notch little cafe there too!

User

Visited yesterday for the Slot Car Festival. Both thatvand access to the Museum are fantastic. Love showing my boy some of the cars I had. Staff are so helpful. Easy parking. Cafe food good range, quality and variety. What not to like. I have been going every year for 3 and they are always adding bits to the area.

User

Visited today, would give it 10 stars if I could. From the staff to the number and quality of vehicles on display and every one was spotless. A lot of work must go into keeping these cars clean! Your tour guides are superb and very knowledgeable and friendly, approachable. The car SOS display is definitely worth a visit too. A special thanks to Clive who filled in the gaps of the sos bits I did not know just wish Tim and Fuzz were there

Food in the cafe excellent and not overpriced

Well worth a visit for all ages

User

If you are any way interested in motor vehicles this place is a 'must see', well laid out and informative, prototypes, film cars and historical cars, great facilities too, only down side is the off road course has gone, but stilll well worth a visit

User

Fantastic place to visit, staff are very polite, friendly, informative. Good Disabilty wheelchair access in all parts of the building.

The restaurant has very nice food, typical e.g food and drinks for four people was £30.00 in total.

A (quick mention/thumbs up) to the member of staff who gave us a talk about the bus and a few other vehicles and allowed my partner to have a cheecky sit in the open top car (parked next to the big old red bus)

Was great to see the old cars of years ago that i remember as a young child for e.g (1982 FORD CORTINA 2.0 GHIA) on show.

Very happy to return soon to have a further look around and wish other museum's were like here, well done.

User

Brilliant collection of cars and parts. We spent 5 hours great value for money. There was a Land Rover show on outside, that was also included in the price. Was great to see some old Land Rover’s. We’re never been before and just called in on our way home from a stay in Windsor. Well worth the visit. There is plenty for children to explore, so would recommend this ad a day out.

An excellent day out for all the family. We loved the science shows with Professor Pickle and Dr Pumpkin, the guided tour, Treasure Hunt and Mission as well as all the vehicles. The cafe was good as well which was a bonus.

User

A really really superb place, superb staff, and a superb cafe for when hunger strikes ....... well worth a visit, can't recommend highly enough, very worthy of 5***** in my humble opinion.

User

Really good day out and excellent value for money if you consider that the ticket is basically and annual pass. The only down point was the restaurant, it seemed to have become some kind of overspill for the Jaguar Land Rover people so half of the tables were taken up by people with laptops having meetings leaving us to eat on some kind of conference table in the lobby.
