What a busy start to the season it was. We had 180 visitors over the two days and they were all looked after by my wonderful volunteers. A huge thanks to Adrian, my Mum & Dad, Shashika, Sylvia, Denise and John, who without I just wouldn’t be able to welcome you all into the mill. If you’re new to this page, welcome and I hope you enjoy it, if you visited the mill and would like to encourage others to find this hidden treasure a kind review on Facebook or TripAdvisor really does help. Many thanks Karl (The dusty one)
Open now until 5pm. Come along and enjoy the mill & surroundings.
Open day prep is well on the way, lots of little bags made and cleaning is on the list for this afternoon. #openday #mill #charlecotemill #openseason
It’s that time of year again when I open the mill up to visitors. The mill will be open this Easter Sunday and Monday to kick off the season. Please help spread the word with a like and a share. Many thanks. #opendays #stratforduponavon #placestovisit #charlecotemill #warwickshire
Look at this yummy bake! Half Charlecote Mill flour half Italian flour for a same day bake.
Have you ever wondered why millers were nicknamed dusty? I have no idea myself! 😁
I’ve finally got around to bedding in the N/W stones from their dressing. I’m running barley through them to help clean them out of stone dust and to help them settle. The barley is borrowed from a local farm and I’ll return it to them as flour, it’s a lovely arrangement. They are still milling a little coarse at the moment but seem to be getting there, they never settle as quick as I’d like them to. #maintenance #charlecotemill #stonegroundflour
Happy Monday everyone. The wheels are turning, the wheat is being milled and it’s a lovely sunny day. There’s a paddle missing on this waterwheel, did you spot it? It’s on my list of things to do. #charlecotemill #waterwheel #mill #stonegroundgoodness
What a lovely sunny day, the birds are singing and Millie is happily milling. #waterwheel #stonegroundflour #naturalpower #charlecotemill
Here’s me with my jolly group for a private tour of the mill this morning. Luckily I had the help of Jeremy to make sure everyone was looked after and flour wasn’t going everywhere while I was guiding the group around the mill. #grouptour #charlecotemill #livinghistory #amillerslife
It’s a little gloomy today so here’s a nice sunny photo to cheer you up on a Monday. #charlecotemill #weepingwillow #mill #watermill
Another bake has been sent in, this time by my niece Olivia who has just taken up baking. Here is her very first loaf made by her own fair hands using Charlecote Mill’s Natural (unbleached) White Flour. I’m very proud indeed.
Did you know the Charlecote Mill Flour also works for pasta?! It’s very versatile and works for many things including bread, pasta, pastry, sponges, pancakes.....the list goes on. Here’s Debbie’s pasta she made yesterday to carb up for a race, good luck Debbie and thanks for sharing.
I’ve just had a sneaky peek @thefarmstratford and it’s looking absolutely stunning! They open at 10am tomorrow (6th April) Do visit this wonderful destination of #local #artisan producers and show them your support. They are so supportive of the mill and have even painted it on their wall! The 1.5kg bags of Wholemeal, Wholemeal Chapatti and Natural White flour will be stocked in the shop. #checkitout #charlecotemill #lovelocal #thefarmstratford
Here’s the answer to my guessing game.....it was a close up of a pair of callipers or dividers hanging in the workshop. #thanksforplayingalong
Who wants to play a guessing game? There are two points available 1 point for the object and 1 point for the location within the mill. The answer will be revealed later this evening. Have fun #charlecotemill #guessinggame #justforfun
Following yesterday post here is what the mill looked like when the @bbc filmed #millonthefloss in 1978. The mill had been derelict for about 15 years at this point and you can see that by the amount of overgrowth there is. The bbc paid for the west waterwheel to be partially restored so it could turn for filming which helped to kick start the restoration of the mill. Once restored by John Bedington Charlecote Mill has been working continuously since the early 1980’s and is still going strong today. #history #charlecotemill
The rustic and unspoilt charm of the back of the mill, a view I don’t think to share often. #charlecotemill #stonegroundflour #waterpower
Just finished the first group tour of 2019, a lovely group from the Talbot Classic Car club. Lots of happy faces here and it was an absolute pleasure giving you all a glimpse into my life as a miller. #grouptour #visit #charlecotemill
Wow an incredible place to visit. Our guide John was very informative telling us about the history, and showed us the process or turning grain to flour. A full working mill. Carl keep up the good work.
We had such a great guided tour of the mill. It's fascinating on its own but the extra details right from its origins to its current customer base, operating idiosyncrasies and the threats due to river modification added such an amazing inside.
I'm so glad we came in!
Your open days are highly recommended.
Visted the Mill on Open day with my family , Mill was operating , guided tour was Excellent and the guide was incredibly informative.Entire place was welcoming and really friendly. My Nephew & Kid were very happy with the visit.
Three children and their dad. Absolutely fantastic afternoon at the mill. A fact filled tour exploring the working mill, pitched perfectly for all four of us. Pull the rope to hoist grain in sacks three floors to the silo's, by chain. Watch the mechanical cleaning of the wheat. Feel the throbbing of the centuries old boards under your feet as gigantic stones grind wheat to flour before your eyes. Learn why timbers were scorched by those who believed in the dark arts. Emerge into the daylight still tasting flour dust for a walk along the river. Recount tales of rushing water, cogs the size of (I don't know what, bigger than a giants dinner plate?) the millers "rule of thumb"...and...and... all the way home and through most of dinner! Thank you Karl and team.
This is an incredible place - the setting, the history, the craftsmanship, the enthusiasm... So great to be able to visit and learn so much about how a mill works. Look out for the open days - it's definitely worth a visit!
Thank you, Karl. You show such passion, pride and energy for your life as the miller at Charlecote Mill. You were really welcoming and told us so much during our visit yesterday. Would recommend to anyone to visit on one of the Mill's Open Days.
Thank you so much for our tour today. So lovely to see history preserved and working so well. Amazing seeing such hard work put into something you all clearly have a passion for. Came away feeling privileged to have stumbled across this place. Thank you!
Thank you so much Karl for a wonderful tour round the mill yesterday. The 10 of us, all keen local bread makers, were fascinated and delighted by your skill, passion and amazing building and site. We left loaded with flour and will be back for more.
Such a lovely afternoon visiting Charlecote Mill. We all loved it and learnt so much from the tour too. The gorgeous homemade cakes topped off the afternoon - thank you Karl and all the team
Many thanks to Karl for looking after us for the day yesterday, we had a fantastic photoshoot in glorious sunshine. Stunning venue with beautiful grounds. Bought some bran and flour which I am looking forward to using.
We WILL be back!!!!
Loved our visit today, well done, looking forward to trying the flour for our bread, the bread we bought is delicious, very interesting tour , good to learn more of our local history & keeping things going ! Well worth a visit, will probably have to visit again soon. X
Love this place. Great people and great business. Good to speak to the father of the owner to hear the journey they've been on for the last four years. I wish them every success!!!
It is especially wonderful that not only is Charlecote a working mill; it's also self funding and provides a full time job for the miller. Long may the mill thrive.
I was just passing as not from the area and saw that the mill was open - what an interesting place - a step back in time - guided around and learnrd so much about the old mill and it’s history. A real gem and so worth a visit.- love the logo too know I know where it comes from
I love Charlecote Mill. It's a unique example of how a watermill can be run in the same manner it was over 200 years ago. Authenticity and tradition kept alive for another generation. It's very important it remains a working watermill, and to run commercially, to maintain and keep our milling heritage alive for all to see. I'm passionate about looking after the mill so at some point it can be passed on to the next miller.
Had an absolutely brilliant time visiting the mill today. My 6 year old son loved it and Karl was so kind and helpful answering all of his questions! Everyone was really friendly and inviting and the homemade cakes were delicious. Looking forward to making some of our own cakes with the flour we bought. We will definitely be visiting again.
Had a lovely afternoon yesterday at the mill. The guided tour was very informative and interesting and the cakes after the tour were delicious. Look forward to our next visit.
Finally visited Charlecote Mill today. Wonderful place in absolutely beautiful surroundings. I could have sat looking at the river for hours-as it looked like a good spot to catch a glimpse of a kingfisher! Informative tour in a delightful building with so much history, and such a treat to see people with a genuine passion for their craft. Congratulations on restoring this old Mill to its former glory and preserving a part of history and heritage while still producing a quality product! We can't wait to try the flour we bought. Thanks to Karl and all the staff today for a lovely end to a glorious Bank Holiday Monday.
A fantastic tour today and wonderful to show my (nearly) 4 year old the "proper" way to get the flour for the white Plat loaf that she helped make and is currently in the oven :-)
