About Cheylesmore Manor House
Cheylesmore Manor House is the remnants of a medieval royal palace in Coventry city centre, now a popular venue for marriages and non statutory ceremonies.
Cheylesmore Manor House Description
The remnants of a medieval royal palace in Coventry city centre, the gatehouse of Cheylesmore Manor is at the heart of the city on New Union Street. The magnificent timber building it is one of the few remnants of Coventry's rich and important heritage.
The building used to be the only unfortified royal palace outside London and is now better known as the Register Office, being the oldest building in the country to hold that function.
It is thought that it was built for the Earl of Arundel in 1237. By 1320 it had passed to Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, along with the lavish Cheylesmore Park that surrounded it. Her son Edward, the Black Prince, took possession of it after her. It was described as 'somewhat in ruin' in the 16th century and suffered from Coventry's lack of royal support in the Civil War period.
The building we know today is, in fact, only the gatehouse and parts of two cross wings to the original manor house. After restoration work, the building opened as a register office in 1968.

At the appointment Claire will go through the following;
• A meeting with to discuss your requirements for your special day • The choice of having someone give you away as part of your ceremony (one or both of you) • Including your story in your words to describe the journey that has bought you together to your special day. • A choice of alternative exchanging of ring pledges. • A choice of alternative promises to make to each other. • The choice to write and include your own personally written ring pledge and promise. • The opportunity to receive a copy of your prepared script to check and keep as a keepsake of your special day. • Help to complete your questionnaire and order any of our bespoke ceremony stationery including order of the day, reading cards, confetti etc…. • Select music of your choice allowing you to choose songs or music that is special to you both. • Include readings from our booklet or of your own choice giving you the opportunity to ask family or friends to be a part of your ceremony. * A virtual tour of the building including the Black Prince Room with a step by step guide to what will happen throughout the ceremony. (if marrying at Cheylesmore Manor House) • A personal service from a highly experienced Registrar herself who will be able to put you at ease and answer any questions you may have so you can relax and enjoy your special day!
