Foals must ingest mares colostrum within the first 12 hours of birth to ensure they have enough antibodies to fight off life threatening infection; Therefore, our vets always ensure the foals latch on as soon as possible.

Jimmy was found in the field with blood and green froth coming from both nostrils. He was also holding his head at an unusual angle. Our vet Carmel passed an endoscope camera into his airway and found a 20cm stick of very thorny bramble stuck in his larynx and extending into his trachea. The brambles proved difficult to remove due to the thorns getting stuck in the surrounding tissues. We called in Dr Bryan O’Meara to remove the bramble with a specialised piece of equipment, Jimmy was very lucky that no further damage was caused to his airways and was treated with painkillers and antibiotics to protect him from infection.
