ADVICE SERVICE HELPS HUNDREDS OF YOUNG PEOPLE AFTER EXAMS Hundreds of young people are on their way to a better future after their exams, thanks to Sandwell Council’s Connexions service.
More than 340 teenagers were advised and supported by the service in the weeks after GCSE and A-Level results being released.
... Connexions staff set up in the One Stop Shop at Sandwell Council House to receive parents and students who needed a helping hand in the aftermath of results day.
Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for children’s services Councillor Simon Hackett said: “Our Connexions team met with more than 340 young people and their parents to talk to them about their next steps after receiving their exam results.
“Some of them did better than they were expecting and others hadn’t done quite so well as they had hoped to – but all of them got great advice about their next steps after school or college.”
Among the young people seeking advice were:
• A partially sighted student who had decided to stay at college but who has since successfully secured a place to study BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at university.
• A high school leaver who didn’t get the grades he expected, but secured an apprenticeship place and a chance to re-take his functional skills qualifications thanks to Connexions.
• A young person needed a lot of help with his UCAS clearing application – who has since secured a university place to study Paramedic Sciences thanks to the support he received.
Anyone aged between 16 and 19 in need of advice about college, training, apprenticeships or employment, can contact Connexions on 0121 569 2955 or visit the One Stop Shop, Sandwell Council House, Freeth Street, Oldbury, B69 3DE.
