Criminal Cases Review Commission Description

The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) exists to independently investigate alleged miscarriages of justice in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The CCRC was created by Act of Parliament and has the power to send, or refer, cases back to the appeal courts if it thinks there is a real possibility the court will quash the conviction or reduce the sentence. Since starting work in 1997 it has sent more than 625 cases for appeal at an average rate of 33 cases per year.

The CCRC was set up as a post-appeal organisation to look into those cases where someone has already lost an appeal, but still says they were wrongly convicted or incorrectly sentenced. For more information see www. ccrc. gov. uk
