Say hello to Buddy the 8 week old German Shepherd! He was such a chilled out chap for his vaccination today, which may have been because he was tired from his puppy pre-school last night! ❤️ We cannot wait to see how big he will grow, he is already weighing in at 10kg!

🐇Rabbit Awareness Week🐇
Our vaccination protocol for Rabbits includes protection against Viral Haemorrhagic Disease: This disease is extremely contagious (spread directly, indirectly and by fleas) and more often than not, is fatal. It affects wild and domesticated rabbits and causes the internal organs to haemorrhage uncontrollably. There are 2 strains of this virus and hence vaccination against both is important.
... We are offering free clinics with our Veterinary Nurses to discuss preventative health care for rabbits, please call us to book in if you are interested!

Is my cat at risk of high blood pressure? 🐈
As our previous post outlined, cats can get high blood pressure and this can be easily managed once detected. The cats most at risk of hypertension are advised to come for regular blood pressure checks, these may include: - Cats over 9 years of age... - Cats diagnosed with kidney disease - Cats with an over active thyroid
If your cat falls into any of these categories, we do run senior cat clinics where blood pressure checks can be performed, so please call the practice to book an appointment with one of our feline friendly qualified nurses: Jenny, Nicky or Megan.

👑 Reginald 👑 Belonging to our Veterinary Nurse Jade, Reggie is your typical 'naughty' terrier. He is 6 this year. He hasn't been getting on so well with his brother Clyde recently. Jade is beginning to address the causes, but has found that putting an Adaptil collar on them is helping them to build bridges.
Reggie's favourite things to do are: barking at the window at passers by, playing with his tennis ball and sleeping in the sun!
... Please visit this link for further information about the Adaptil collars, and call us if you would like any advice! www.adaptil.com/uk/Products/ADAPTIL-Calm- On-the-go-Collar

Did you know that cats get high blood pressure?

🐣 EASTER WARNING - Hot cross buns 🍇
Don't forget that dried fruits including raisins (often found in hot cross buns and other baked goods) as well as Grapes are toxic to the kidneys. Please keep these foods away from your pets and do not feed them as treats.
This type of toxin is not dose dependent, which means one raisin or grape could be enough to have toxic effects 🙀 Some dogs seem to not be sensitive to the toxin ( I bet you all know someone who says they feed grapes with... no ill effects to their animal), however, because we do not know what the toxin is and how it affects each individual, it is not worth the risk of waiting and seeing. Kidney failure in affected dogs develops very rapidly and may be fatal.
If you need further advice, or you’re concerned your pet has ingested hot cross buns or any Simnel Cake over Easter please contact the practice on 01386 446095 as soon as possible

🐱 Arthritis in cats 🐱
Top Tips for helping your cat at home: -Encourage weight loss if overweight -Raise the food food and water bowls if the neck or elbows are affected... -Use lower sided litter trays -Create steps or use footstools and chairs so they are able to get onto things rather than jumping up -Provide comfy beds such as pillows, especially by the radiator to keep those arthritic joints warm

🐱 Did you know that cats can get arthritis?🐱
In fact, many more may be suffering from this disease than we realise. It has been found in studies that 90% of cats over 12 have some level of osteoarthritis. It is often hips, elbows, knees and ankle joints that are affected.
The tricky thing about arthritis in cats is that they don't normally present as being lame or in pain because they are genetically designed to not show weakness. Signs often include: ungroomed hair, ingrown ...claws, crying when being picked up, not using the stairs or jumping onto things or messing outside of their litter tray.
Please call us if you have any concerns about your cat please make an appointment with one of our vets, at this health check, we may be able to determine if they could be suffering from arthritis.
