The British Society for the Surgery of the Hand have warned dog walkers that they face serious injuries to their hands through incorrect use of dog leads whilst walking their pets. Injuries range from friction burns through to bone fractures with Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust reporting that they treated 30 serious injuries caused to dog walkers by their leads in a single year. It is recommended that dog walkers should not wrap the lead around their wrist, hand or fingers or to hook their fingers under the dog's collar. They also advise keeping larger dogs on a short lead so that they are unable to build up speed.

We are now stocking Vet's Kitchen complete dog and cat food. With a higher meat content than many other foods and avoiding ingredients such as wheat and soya, this food created by vet Joe Inglis is sure to be appreciated by your pet.

We wish all our customers and friends a very happy Christmas and New Year. We will be open Christmas Eve until about 1.00 pm, closed on Boxing Day, and reopen at 9.00am on Friday 28th December. All other days normal opening times.

There is currently a huge fire at Chester Zoo which has been evacuated and closed today. The fire is in the Monsoon Forest. Our thoughts are with the firefighters and Zoo staff fighting this blaze and trying to rescue the animals there. Hopefully all visitors and staff are safe.

Two new ranges of dog treats we found at a recent trade show. We are now stocking Woolf dog treats, made with high quality protein, high in meat content and available from us in 12 varieties. We are also stocking Pet Bakery available in 3 varieties of gourmet shortbread biscuit and a gluten free liver brownie variety.

In recent years the market for pet food (particularly dog food) has been moving towards grain free diets. These have been increasingly seen as a better option to the grain based diets and to be more "hypoallergenic". News that the FDA in the US is now investigating them as a potential cause of DCM in dogs is therefore a little worrying. DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) affects the dogs heart muscle and can cause heart valves to leak and a build up of fluids in the chest and abdom...en. Symptoms include decreased energy, coughing, difficulty breathing and episodes of collapse. The FDA have refused to name which brands of pet food they are investigating saying that the ingredients such as legumes, pulses and/or potatoes appear to be the common thread. Vet John Burns and founder of Burns Pet Nutrition has long argued against grain free diets and recommends whole grains as the mainstay of healthy eating for pets. At this stage the FDA is not making any recommendation about changing diets but suggests that concerned owners should consult their vet providing them with a "thorough dietary history".

Whilst reading the latest edition of a trade magazine, my attention was taken by the headline "Poor quality, mass produced food a 'danger to cats', vet claims". Basically, researchers have found that 4 out of 10 cat owners never check the label of the cat food they are buying. What was even more surprising was that 1 in 5 cat owners didn't even know that cats are carnivores. According to the survey, 67% of owners would not feed their cat hides, skins, pig bristles, heads of p...oultry or feathers, though this is exactly what they are feeding with some cheap brands of cat food. Reading the label can tell you much about the quality of the food. For example, shown here are parts of two food labels. The cheaper one shows that the main ingredient is meat and animal derivatives (a catch all term that covers any product derived from the processing of the carcass of any warm bloodied animal) and the named meat accounts for just 4% of the ingredients. Although a little bit more expensive, the ingredients of the better food indicate a far better quality product, and this is also reflected in a lower feeding rate as the better quality protein is easier to digest. As vet Rodney Zasman puts it, "one of the biggest dangers to our cats health is actually poor quality, mass produced pet food.
