HMRC error affects payments on account!
An error with HMRC's systems means some taxpayers may not receive an expected bill for payments on account next month, but will need to pay a much higher bill in January 2020.

HM Revenue & Customs has issued the following information re: Making Tax Digital for #VAT.
This is to let you know that scheduled maintenance to the Making Tax Digital (#MTD) VAT service will take place on Saturday 15th June 2019 from 11:30pm to 10:30am on Sunday 16th June 2019.
As a result of the downtime, you will be unable to use the VAT API service. Any attempt to use the service will result in a '500 service error' message.
... During these periods, customers will be unable to: >> Sign up for MTD >> Create an Agent services account (although all other Agent services will be available) >> Submit returns >> View previous submissions and payment details >> Set up new or cancel and amend existing direct debits >> Review and update any business details
Note: a further period of scheduled maintenance for just the MTD VAT service will take place on Monday 17 June from 9am to 5pm (at the latest).
During this period, customers will be unable to: >>> Submit VAT returns through MTD software >>> View return information through their online services account or software
The service availability page on http://GOV.UK has been updated to include details of these down times.
They apologise for any inconvenience caused.

It is always hugely satisfying to achieve the right result for a client, especially in a tussle with HMRC.
Dyke Yaxley’s Tax team have recently managed to secure a successful claim for Entrepreneur’s Relief on the sale of a sizeable landed estate, comprising a number of let properties, main hall, woodland and surrounding land. Our argument was based around the estate being regarded as the acquisition of a single asset for Capital Gains Tax purposes, rather than a series of s...eparate disposals of the component parts.
The tax at stake was a substantial, six-figure sum. However, once the valuations for Private Residence Relief and various other apportionments of value were agreed between the Land Agents and HMRC, the total tax payable amounted to less than 5% of the gross disposal proceeds.
Despite the lengthy period involved in dealing with this case, and the worry involved along the way, we now have a very happy client. However, this case highlights that HMRC will continue to pursue cases where they believe there is potential for large settlements.
