Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre

About Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre

Originally a Bird of prey hospital set up in the early 80s, Gentleshaw wildlife centre expanded in 1993 to include a rescue sanctuary for rescued exotic animals and captive bred birds of prey .

Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre Description

A small rescure centre for unwanted or mistreated exotic animals, birds of prey and reptiles. Also on site is a bird of prey hosptial, used to treat injured wild birds of prey. These casulties are not on display and are with us for rehabilitation until they are fit. The wild birds of prey are then returned to the wild. The sanctuary is open to the public where you can visit our captive bred, permanent residents, including Lynx, Raccoons, Owls, Hawks, Snakes, Lizards and more.

We thought we'd jump on the band wagon and see if Russian Steppe eagle Samara , might pick the winner. Unfortunately she decided she would rather sit and enjoy the sun, she's obviously not a football fan! Never mind, come on England!

User

Good afternoon. Just to put minds at rest. The small fire within the garden centre is under control and is not affecting us although the garden centre is currently closed. Huge pat on the back for the quick reactions of the Fletcher's staff and the fire brigade. The glorious weather is to blame . No one is hurt and Brian, Bim and Oliver the Capuchins are finding the action fasinating!

User

Sometimes the simplest of things are enriching for our animals, new sights or smells. And who doesn't love an empty box?!

User

What a little gem of a place!

The animals are well looked after and the staff really put their all into looking after them! Certainly well worth a visit and the price is fantastic! Well done

User

Went yesterday and got a private tour of the new shop, just brilliant thanks lesley and Ken. The centre is great and the signs that describe everything that goes on are so funny. Well worth going. Brilliant day out not just for families but for anyone.

User

We have been visitors to this lovely place for some years now . The` staff` are always friendly and willing to chat . A railway runs through pleasantly tended gardens and ponds and gives a nice ride around the animal enclosures . Upon entry ( at an affordable small charge ) you are straight away in close contact with the birds and livestock , no hike before you begin. A lot of the displayed animals are from other zoo`s etc and their stories are all told in a note-case kept on the animal or bird`s cage . Be prepared for quite a few pleasant surprises ! It is quite obvious that this is not one of the giants of the zoological world , but you do appreciate that every penny of income really is put to full and good use in caring and feeding the creatures held in the care of "Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre ". This is why i keep-on going back. Bill Birch.

User

Thank you so much for our zookeeper eperience day all the staff were super friendly the animals were so lovely with special mention for beautiful Saxon! Loved flying the Eagle and holding the skunk too. Even in the snow nothing was too much trouble, can't recommend highly enough and will definately be returning in the summer!

User

Spent the afternoon here today with my family of 5 & we couldn't have had a better time. The animals are amazing to watch (particularly the wolf-dog & macaques!) and the staff were so friendly. Would definitely recommend & will be returning in the near future (looks like we might have to buy a wolf dog experience too!) We used the group on offer which allowed family entry for £8.00 but I wouldn't hesitate to pay full price, money well spent on a good cause.

User

Its a lvly place if u like birds of prey and other animals its like a mini zoo the people are friendly and the wolf dog is amazing my son went inside the cage with him his so friendly he lvd it great place to go

User

I visited today with my daughter and mom and had a great time spending a few hours wandering around. The admission is brilliant value for money, they have such a diverse array of animals to see, most with little stories of their background and how they come to end up at the centre. Staff are friendly and the centre is lovely a clean and the animals have great shelters. We will definitely be visiting again, just wish it was a little closer.

User

I love it here! The place is amazing and the work the brilliant staff do is amazing! I can't stress enough how much you should visit here if you get the chance! The sanctuary is run solely on donations and if anywhere deserves it here does! I visit as many times I can!

User

Had a really lovely day with my husband & our 4 children (2,6,10&13), they all thoroughly enjoyed it!! Highly recommend & reasonable xx thank you, we'll be back

User

Had a lovely visit here yesterday (Easter bank holiday Monday 2018). We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the centre and the condition of the "guests". It's evident that the centre is staffed by very dedicated people who love the animals and birds in their care. Despite the bad weather, we could have stayed much longer but had to be elsewhere. My youngest son's highlight of the visit? Murphy!

User

Great day out with grandkids. They really enjoyed themselves looking at all the different animals and singing with the signing dog. Would definitely recommend

User

Bought the wolfdog experience for my sister as a surprise. She absolutely loved it! Think Saxon has a new friend now!! Always great atmosphere with knowledgeable and friendly staff

User

Great to see the animals/ birds being looked after so well......

Thank you for all that you do xxxxx

User

Absoloutely fantastic day had by me and my family. My daughters both had Zoo Keeper experiences, the whole experience was just amazing, The staff were spot on, so friendly and they spent so much time explaining to the girls about each individual animal. Everything about the experience was very hands on and exactly how being a zoo keeper would work. We shall be returning very soon. Amazing work Gentleshaw staff

User

visited for the second time today and even though it was a good day it was a little disappointing, there were a few animals who seemed to be pacing a lot especially one of the raccoons, it seemed confused. maybe its normal behaviour i don't know as i'm no expert, i just felt a bit sorry for them. Towards the back where you walk to see the ponies there are broken ornaments scattered which spoils it, it was so pretty the last time we came. despite this my children had a great time seeing all the different animals and we probably would come again, its definitely a hidden gem :)

User

Came along with my friend Trish, Sat 21July, with the opportunity to photograph some of the animals and birds, enjoyed our time the staff are very friendly, a good chance to practice my camera skills.
