We would like to remind anyone attending maternity, for an ultrasound scan, that children under the age of 14 are not permitted in the scan room. We do allow up to two people over the age of 14, to accompany you. Children under the age of 14 cannot be left unattended in the waiting room. An ultrasound scan is an important medical examination, and it is treated in the same way as any other hospital investigation.

The heatwave is expected to peak today, so you may need some extra tips to try and stay cool: • Monitor heatwave advice. Listen to heatwave alerts on the radio, TV and social media about keeping cool. • Dress to keep cool. Wear loose, light clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors. Cotton is cooler. • Avoid swollen feet. Minimise time spent standing, wear comfortable shoes, put your feet up regularly and do a few foot exercises to reduce swelling and cramp in your calf muscles. • BBQ safely. BBQ’s are popular in the summer but food can spoil if left out too long in the sun. Avoid the risk of unnecessary stomach upsets.

Being pregnant means you can feel the heat more than usual. Here are some top tips to help cool you down: • Have lukewarm showers and baths. Cold showers/baths can cause your body to retain heat. • Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. You can open the windows for ventilation when it is cooler. • Manage hot flushes. Carry a small spray with you to cool you down. • Keep hydrated. Keep a small re-usable water bottle with you at all times and keep thi...s refilled. • Reduce salt intake. This will help to combat water retention • Siesta. Sleep more and take a nap in the afternoon in a cool room.

With the heatwave basking us all in sunshine it’s quite hot in clinic and our maternity department today, even with all our fans on! If anyone does have to come in for an appointment today it is worth bringing a cold drink with you and wearing loose and comfortable clothes.

The midwives could not have done more for us, many going out of their way and their hours, they truly are an exceptional team. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone to chose geh.

I’ve had all three of my girls at George Eliot. Each birth completely different. A c section, a natural and an induction so I’ve experienced all.

I’ve had an amazing experience with all three. My second birth was straight forward and an amazing student midwife called Kayleigh Ann supported me and helped me throughout. My final was a very complicated pregnancy and I was admitted countless times. Kayleigh (now qualified) was a familiar face who took time out to come and see how I was even if I wasn’t her patient. Her and another lady (didn’t catch her name) went above and beyond to keep me and my baby safe. I cannot thank these ladies enough. It was honestly the scariest time of my life as I could have lost my daughter at any point. Had it not been for them, I would have been a mess. With their knowledge and support both me and baby were kept comfortable and safe throughout the pregnancy and baby was delivered early but successfully. I will definitely be giving birth at George Eliot if I ever have another (IF lol) and I hope these two special ladies will be there to help x

I went into Drayton Ward on Friday to be induced. I was looked after by a number of midwives who were all fantastic. One of the midwives Taz was involved in my induction and was also on shift the morning after he was born. Following his birth she supported me with feeding my baby to make sure it was established before leaving the hospital. She had all the time in the world to support me and answer all my questions. My gorgeous little boy was born at 1.30am on Sunday. I managed to experience early labour in the birthing pool and had an incredible midwife Julie who was with me the whole way through allowing me to have a very easy labour and an experience to treasure.

I have nothing but praise for all the staff I met during my birthing experience and would recommend anyone considering their hospital choices to opt for George Elliot.

A massive thank you to Taz and Julie for allowing me to have an amazing birth story to share.

Thank you again xxx

I seen a poster on the wall yesterday asking if any member of staff has excelled in their services. I can honestly say that not one member of staff excelled, they all did. Thank you for looking after my daughter Kirsty Warden and her gorgeous little boy in special care. You are all amazing and a true credit to the hospital xx

User

I know im abit late with this post but George Eliot Maternity is absolutely fantastic. Me and my husband had our 3 youngest here in 2011 2012 and 2014. We were treated like we are people not rubbish like other hospitals. The staff are amazing and friendly. I got to know Ruth the diabetic nurse really well aswell as a midwife called lindsey who amazingly delivered all 3 of our boys. During the deliveries lindsey had my husband helping with what ever he could help with. She made him feel like he was just as important and a part of it as I was. We couldn't recommend this wonderful hospital enough. I want to say a big thank you to all staff especially Ruth and lindsey. Love karlina and Chris Kennedy xxxxx

I have just got home today from a two night stay at this hospital after being moved from UHCW as it was so busy.. I was nervous about going to a hospital I did not know but from the second I arrived I felt safe and totally reassured.. from the clerk who checked us in to the two midwives who looked after me during my labour Emma and Jo to all the the wonderful nurses and HCA’s upstairs in the Drayton Ward and the catering staff and Doctors I couldn’t have been looked after any better... you are all a total credit to your profession and the NHS should be very proud to employ each and every one of you.. I could never thank you all enough and I would recommend your services to all women and the free meal, parking and making birth partners involved in every step including staying with you after ensures you not only take care of mothers and babies you make the experience wonderful for the partners too.. Thank you so much.

User

I have just come home with my new baby boy after a 5 day stay on the Drayton ward and I cannot fault the care I received from everyone. The Midwife’s were all fantastic in particular Chloe on Drayton ward . She listened to me , answered all my questions and everyone explained everything to me throughout my stay.

The job they do is wonderful and I was really blown away by the standard of care - thankyou everyone at GE maternity for delivering my baby safely into the world and looking after me so well.

User

I had such amazing care during my stay at George Eliot. Would truly recommend to any expecting mum to choose George Eliot maternity, every single midwife I met during the pregnancy and birth of my daughter was so friendly and helpful. Lucy and Kayleigh were absolutely fantastic so caring, and truly made having a baby as special as it should be.

User

I had a Home birth 30th Nov 2016, I was becoming quite uncomfortable and unfortunately the midwife on call was stuck in traffic and was struggling to get to me, my birthing partner/auntie was on the phone to George Eliot Hospital talking to a very kind lady, this lady who I can’t remember her name sensed how stressed my aunty was, ended up grabbing a bag and literally ran round to my house ( I live close) even tho she was advised to send an ambulance and I believe she also didn’t deliver babies anymore ( don’t quote me on last part ha) when this lovely lady got to my house she very quickly delivered my baby I was completely put at ease she was truly amazing, Iv never forgotten what she did for me going above and beyond for mine and my babies safety and comfort, can’t thank this lovely lady enough

I gave birth to my baby girl at the George Eliot hospital on 2nd April. Being a first time mum, I was scared of labour and not knowing what to expect. However, all the midwives on both the Labour Suite and Drayton Ward were ever so caring and reassuring. I can't remember all of their names except Gemma and Chloe but they were all lovely. I would like to thank them all so much! The staff work hard and genuinely do care about their patients. Both myself and my husband had 24 hour care and support looking after our daughter during our two night stay on the ward. I don't know of any other hospitals that allow the partner to stay overnight and this was one of several reasons why we chose the George Eliot over Leicester and Coventry. The parking is also free for the first 24 hours. Again, you wouldn't get this at the other hospitals. The George Eliot is usually slated by the media but both the Maternity Unit and A&E were brilliant with my ante natal care as well as post natal care. I would definitely recommend this hospital for its high quality services.

User

Absolutely exceptional from start to finish. Had my 2nd here on 14th April after bad time previously elsewhere. Previous emergency C section so wanted natural as possible. Supported throughout pregnancy & had meetings to prepare my birth plan. Extra checks on baby by MAU team to keep tabs. Labour - long process for me but the staff were amazing. Helped me get as close to my birth plan as possible. Rooms are stunning and good sizes, more like a hotel than hospital. good range of equipment to use (balls, stools etc). Used the pool at one point which was amazing. I was listened to, encouraged and supported at every point. Staff came back in to congratulate us. The ward team were very welcoming and helpful. Food was good. Clean, comfortable ward. Hubby could stay with us & 24hr free car park pass. Highly recommend & cannot thank them enough x
