Time for a new emerald necklace? Christie’s will be holding a major jewellery auction in Geneva this May. A piece of jewellery with an impressive royal backstory is a 19th century emerald and diamond fringe necklace, which passed hands between French and English royalty. Valued between $1,500,000 and $2,500,000, the necklace was a gift from Duke Henri d’Orleans of Aumale and was given to his goddaughter Princess Helen of France as a wedding gift. (She married Prince Emanuele... Filiberto of Italy in 1895.)
Nearly a century later, it later passed into the possession of the Marchioness of Cholmondeley Sybil Sassoon.
If this a little out of your financial reach we have a selection of emerald necklaces in store, like this lovely yellow gold one for £265.00

This is why we wear diamond engagement rings
When it comes to a proposal, there has to be a diamond involved. The cut and clarity depend on the budget. The setting and shape are chosen according to the bride’s tastes. But no matter what, there is a diamond. It’s just how proposals go. But why? When did diamonds become symbolic of engagements and marriage? It’s all down to some Here’s how it went down. Putting a diamond ring on it is a pretty recent thing. Before the 20th Cen...tury, there were competing customs to symbolise getting engaged.
In England, for example, the couple would break a piece of gold or silver and each keep half, cementing the decision by having a glass of wine. In America, some women were given thimbles. Once they got married the thimbles would have the top cut off so they could wear them as rings. Fancy. Diamonds were incredibly rare. Diamonds were difficult to get hold of, meaning only the very rich and powerful could afford to give them as gifts. Then, in the 1870s, miners started discovering loads of diamonds in South Africa. Diamonds began to flood world markets, and people started to realise that they were actually pretty common (which could have damaged their high price). So in 1888 several major mines formed together to create De Beers Consolidated Mines, LTD. This allowed miners to control the flow of diamonds from South Africa to the rest of the world. And that’s how a common stone became thought of as a rare, inherently valuable commodity.

Do you have old bits of gold jewellery that you don't wear anymore? Why not have them melted and rolled into a new ring.😍

The Cullinan Diamond Weighing 3,106 carats, the Cullinan Diamond was the largest diamond ever discovered — today, the stones cut from the original Cullinan are part of the British Crown Jewels. Discovered at South Africa’s Premier Mine in 1905, the stone was named after Thomas Cullinan, a diamond magnate who owned the mine. The diamond was presented as a gift to King Edward VII of England in 1907 in its natural, rough state. That year, the Amsterdam firm I.J. Asscher — who re...ceived the royal commission to cut the stone — divided the original gem into nine numbered stones known as the Cullinans I-IX, plus 96 small brilliants and nine carats of unpolished fragments. The most well-known of these resultant stones are the Cullinan I and Cullinan II, which are frequently referred to as the First and Second Stars, and are the two largest colorless and flawless cut diamonds in the world. The 530-carat Cullinan I was set at the head of the Sovereign’s Sceptre, part of the regalia made for Charles II. The Cullinan II, a cushion-shaped brilliant weighing 317.40 carats, graces the band of the Imperial State Crown.
