About Goodway Nursery School

An Outstanding Maintained Nursery School in Great Barr promoting exploratory play and outdoor learning for children aged 2-4.
Children's rights are at the heart of our approach and we have achieved our Gold Unicef Rights Respecting School award.

Goodway Nursery School Description

Goodway Nursery School provides a welcoming, stimulating and secure environment where children and families from all backgrounds and cultures are valued.

We respect children's rights, listening to children and putting their needs at the heart of our work.

Our experienced teachers and teaching assistants are highly qualified to support children's learning and to ensure they get the best start in their education.

Our inclusive school community works together to promote equality, encouraging and supporting each child to develop their potential and sense of identity. We develop our children's curiosity and challenge them to achieve their best and become self confident and independent learners.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which provides children with the skills they need to become independent learners, and to be successful when they start at primary school.

A drama specialist works with the children each week, developing their communication and language through dramatic and imaginative play.

Children take part in regular Forest School sessions in our excellent outdoor facilities, where children learn about and explore nature.

We provides 15 hours of free nursery education per child per week. Parents can opt to pay for an additional 15 hours. For more information please visit our website.

Supporting Elim Church Food Bank 📦
In Kingstanding there are many people living on the edge of poverty. All it takes is a sudden unexpected event such as bereavement, illness, redundancy to contribute to this situation. The Food Bank provides people with the essentials at a time when they need them the most. At Goodway Nursery we are supporting Elim Church by collecting food items and distributing them to the Church for less fortunate families at such a difficult time. We ...have collected items such as dried and tinned food.
We have been learning about the right to the best possible health with clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment. We have been sorting and categorising the food items and we then transferred them into smaller bags to carry. A group of children and some staff walked up to Elim Church to deliver the food items which will be made into food parcels for families across the local community. 📦
UNICEF Article 24. Every child has the right to the best possible health. Governments must work hard to provide a good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment so that children can stay healthy.
UNICEF Article 27 Every child has the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical, social and mental needs. Governments must help families who cannot afford to provide this.
Thank you everyone for helping by sending the food items. 😀

Our 2s also love Forest school.
They have lots of fun and enjoy being in our wonderful outdoor environment. The ethos of Forest Schools is to allow children the time and space to develop skills, interest and understanding through a range of activities which provide practical, hands-on experiences in a natural environment. Our 2s totally enjoy their Forest School experiences weekly.... Here are a few of our fun Forest School experiences and a little homework too if any of our little learners from the 2s and 3s would like to carry on looking for leaves whilst they are out and about with their families .

You may have heard of the phrase growth mindset, but what does growth mindset actually mean? More importantly, what does growth mindset mean for children.
What is a fixed mindset?
Believing that intelligence cannot be changed in any meaningful way. People are naturally intelligent, it is fixed.
... What is a growth mindset?
Believing that intelligence can be developed over time. Through effort and determination, intelligence can grow.
Why should you encourage a growth mindset in your child?
Increase your child’s engagement with learning
Children with a growth mindset view tasks that challenge them as their favourite tasks of all. This positive view of challenge helps to fuel a spirit of curiosity, giving children the confidence to engage fully with the learning process and have fun.
What have you done today that has really made you think? Happy Thursday all 😀

We will be collecting food for our local food bank over the next two weeks and will be teaching children about the right for every child to have the best possible health, with clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment (Article 24 of the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child)
There are local families struggling to put food on the table. Foodbanks can help to prevent family breakdown, housing loss, crime and mental health problems. Our local foodbank, Elim Church ...Kingstanding helps provide emergency food to many people and families locally every year.
The food bank ask that all donations are non-perishable to avoid them spoiling before they reach people. Examples include: ● Milk (UHT or powdered) ● Fruit juice (carton) ● Tinned soup ● Pasta and rice ● Pasta sauce ● Tinned tomatoes ● Cereals ● Tinned meat and fish ● Tinned vegetables ● Tinned fruit ● Tea bags/instant coffee
There will be a basket next to the fridge in the Community Room where you can leave your donations. Thank you for your kind generosity.

At Goodway we understand the benefits of mark making. Physical skills are developed, their creative skills and their imagination grows further. Children at Goodway are given lots of opportunities to mark make. Mark making itself added together with the encouragement and praise from adults around them creates a fantastic opportunity for children to make sense of the world and express their feelings in a fun and creative way. Here are some of our mark making activities this week.

Our core book is’ The Tiger who came to tea’Judith’s Kerr’s classic tale. Our children have really enjoyed reading this story and we have taken the opportunity to participate in many learning opportunities whilst reading this fantastic, funny story. We are also going to visit the stage production in January. I think a lot of our confident, independent learners will be making their own production of The Tiger who came to tea.😁 Hope you enjoy looking at our pictures.

Thank you to all our parents who came to our Communication and Language workshops this week. It’s important to talk to your child it will help your child learn to talk as it is a from listening to your voice that babies and children learn to use language. It will stimulate your babies or Childs brain helping to strengthen the connections that make learning possible. It will help your child to become a good reader and writer, because language skills form the foundation of lite...racy. It will help your child to develop social skills and good relationships. It will show that you love and respect your child, enhancing self -esteem. It will help the two of you form a close bond- Communication is the basis of your relationship with each other. Happy Saturday all and thank you again to all our families for your continued support.

Our children enjoy forest school sessions and this week we got to try our brand new waterproofs that we were able to purchase with money donated by our wonderful families and the local community at our summer fair. The waterproofs will mean we can play, learn, explore, investigate and have fun outside no matter the weather. A big thank you to everyone that contributes to our nursery, school fund donations enable us to provide additional exciting resources to enhance our children’s experiences.

Diwali will be celebrated on the 7th November 2018 this year. In nursery we have been learning about the festival of lights and have enjoyed making Rangoli patterns and diva lamps that we have created using clay. It is a very colourful holiday where diva lamps are lit and windows are opened to welcome in the New Year, believing that the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi can enter.
People who celebrate Diwali may have a holiday from school/work, exchange presents and prepare delicious foods. New clothes and jewellery may be worn and families celebrate together playing games and having parties. Often fireworks are are set off in the belief that they will warn off evil spirits, making the skies colourful just like the decorated houses. 🎇 Happy Diwali to you all for tomorrow 🌟😀hope you enjoy our pictures.
