About Greenwood Chinchilla

Based Birmingham, UK we have bred & rescued chinchillas for 20 years - we specialise in Sapphire & Recessive charcoals as well as usual dominant colours

Greenwood Chinchilla Description

At Greenwood Chinchillas, our chins aren't just our breeding stock. There are some that started off as my personal pets, some bought in specifically for breeding, some of which are not used for breeding at all due to their low quality or genetic problems, and some rescues simply waiting here until new homes can be found - but all are treated the same way as the original pets that remain here.

All chins that are bred from, or the kits we sell, have been checked to ensure as far as possible, that no genetic or teething problems are present in the animal itself or its parents. All kits sold are sent to their new home with a bag of their current pellets, hay and a printed pedigree. Pedigrees can range from one generation to five generations - each one showing where known the best award it has received, the colour, DOB and pet name of the animal as well as its breeders code.

We don't allow our females to have more than one litter a year - its dangerous to them and the kits produced are likely to be weak and sickly.

Every one of our chins lives in the family home, not out in a breeding shed with little company, and all except new mothers still receive regular exercise runs up and down the hallway! All the chins are cared for and treated as pets - the babies they produce being a pleasant extra to keeping a fascinating and interesting pet.

Naming animals has never been easy - so all the chins we have bought in unnamed or bred ourselves have been called after plants! Makes thinking of new names easier - but also more difficult sometimes to make it fit the personality of the animal!

We always have β€œrejects” as everyone always wants a baby as young as possible - but all chins in general with time and patience bond and make friends, nothing more rewarding than turning a skittish scared chin into a loving pet.
Also consider a fur chewer - its sometimes a bit tatty to look at but they are healthy in all other ways πŸ™‚ some breeders snap their necks, but we gather as many up as we can before that happens even though they are slowest to Rehome - they can have normal long healthy lives even if they do occasionally stress chew or overgroom πŸ™‚.

Not the best pics but a great litter born today - from chakra my royal blue Male to Marion my own bred standard sapphire cArrier. Demonstrating the 4 versions of kits you can get from such a pairing - royal blue female, sapphire Male, black velvet sapphire cArrier Male and Standard sapphire cArrier female (who is only 21g so hope she makes it)

But late updating from the national chinchilla show yesterday - took along 10 animals at last minute (as usual for me!) with very little prep and picked up 7 awards which was very good going for such a show πŸ˜‰ my three standstds got nothing but that was to be expected as they were all recessive carriers up against every breeders best pure bred standards
Three young sapphires got Highley commended (2 are for sale) Brown velvet got a 3rd Adult brown white Cross got a 3rd (now g...one into breeding) Adult charcoal female got highley commended but has started to oxidise so had gone past her best showing times (previous 1st and 2 x 3rds)
And my older homo beige got another 1st πŸ˜‰ and is now in with the charcoal πŸ˜‰

Just found a huge beige girl born but stone cold in cage and unmoving - got her going again with hot water, chest compressions and banana swings to clear the lungs and then a low heat hair dryer to keep her warm whilst mum was busy with labour of 2nd kit but remains to be seen if will make it πŸ˜• always have to try though but it’s always 50/50 after reviving

Amazing day at the chin show - last min decision as usual to go and no prep done due to mum being in hospital - but took 12 animals and got 12 awards!
Best of all got overall exhibitors award, 1st mutation breeders award and 3rd standard breeders award (all 4 standards I showed were black pearl or sapphire cArriers).
Top individual animals awards were reserve best young mutation and reserve best adult mutation πŸ™‚
... Both charcoals band sapphire got awards - which for difficult recessives is always great to show I’ve got them going the right way

Mega baby boom the last 3 days after a period with no babies - never had so many in so short a space of time its made for my highest number of kits by this time of year in 22 years of breeding! thankfully not many left pregnant now! a Quins, a quads, 2 lots of triplets and 2 twins! Sadly some from the bigger litters were born dead - but most are active and healthy and doing well! Just typical all the wrong time of year for being a good age for showing next season!

Been a sad week for me this week - dusty one of my oldest charcoals and one of my soppiest chinchillas died at just under 14 years old. For the last 6 years she’d been coming to chinchilla promotional fairs and shows and been a hit with everyone. She’s the founding matriarch to many of my ribbon winning charcoal lines - so still lives on in them (Shesgreat great grandmother to the female char I got a 3rd with last week)

Another shockingly successful day at the chin show today considering I went literally last minute and hasn’t prepped or groomed - took 13 animals and got 10 awards - top being res best adult mutation. And also got 3rd mutation breeders award - not bad going considering I took mostly odd colours or chins out of multioccupancy cages πŸ˜‰
