About Hare & Hounds Kings Heath

Hare & Hounds

Hare & Hounds Kings Heath Description

Situated in the South Birmingham suburb of Kings Heath, the Hare and Hounds has been around since 1820, but has stood in its present form since 1907. This, along with the beautiful and unique Art Nouveau tiles that line the entry hall and staircase, is a major contributing factor to its current Grade II listed status.

Although playing host to local Birmingham legends UB4O’s first ever gig in 1979 (recently commemorated by a PRS Music Heritage award and plaque), it is only in the past 7 years that it’s really established itself as one of the most important and influential music venues in the country, playing a vital part in nurturing the city’s vibrant music and creative community.

The pub boasts two downstairs bars which host regular food evenings, a pub quiz and weekend DJs whilst the two upstairs venues feature live music & club nights spanning jazz, indie, funk, reggae, hip hop, soul, house, D’n’B & comedy most nights of the week.

Local & National promoters who present shows at the Hare & Hounds include Leftfoot, This Is Tmrw, Birmingham Promoters, Metropolis Music, SJM, AEG, Kililive, Live Nation, Glasswerk, World Unlimited, Cosmic American, Capsule (Supersonic Festival), Moseley Folk Festival, Mostly Jazz, Funk & Soul Festival and many more…

HARE AND HOUNDS BANK HOLIDAY SPECIAL WITH DJ FORMAT + SUPPORT FROM... SAM REDMORE DOORS: 9PM
The title of his 2003 debut album says it all: Music For The Mature B-Boy. That’s DJ Format for you, boiled down to the essence. He’s the grown up producer/beatmaker who, admittedly, spends far too long digging for bafflingly scarce records to play, sample, and make you dance.
His five artist albums, featuring rap heavyweights like Edan, Mr Lif, Phill Most Chill, Jurassic 5, and of course long-time collaborator, Abdominal, have been called some of the highpoints in UK hip hop. And his skill in compiling albums and crafting mixtapes has seen him enlisted by the good people at FabricLive, Fania, and BBE, for block party business, Latin funk bombs, and heavy psych sessions, respectively.
More recently a string of cut ‘n’ paste 45s have kept his name in DJs’ boxes. These megamix tributes to the likes of James Brown, Kool & The Gang, and The Meters, are as funky as they were labour-intensive to put together.
His DJ sets are like long form versions of these productions – Easy on the scratches, meticulous on the execution, and built on the deep crates he’s spent years building.
Catch him behind the decks at a spot near you. His high-octane sets of soul, funk, Latin, and feel-good hip hop, have rocked spots the world over. And he’s never happier than when he gets the chance to share his mature b-boy music with people just like you.

Went to the Prince Tribute gig on 21.4.18. Have drank in the Hare And Hound. But never been to a gog their great venue. Loved the night. Great atmosphere. Prince would have been proud of so many people enjoying his music and celebration of his life

Well done Hare and Hound x

User

Went for the Alexis Taylor Prince DJ set and that was great. But I especially want to thank the barman who was at the top bar with glasses, I'd asked for £20 cashback but in my slightly inebriated state I forgot to take the cash. I realised my mistake and went back expecting the staff to shrug/tell me to get lost (as they would in other venues), but no, the barman remembered me and had kept the £20 back and handed it to me without any argument. Thanks H&H!

Set in the heart of Kings Heath, the Hare and Hounds has long led the way as a great venue for aspiring and established bands. UB40 played their very first gig there, as a plaque on the outside proudly proclaims. I should know, they got me to play guitar for them that night! Weekly, a roster of the finest new acts continue to wow the two packed upstairs venues, whilst downstairs, the free Saturday afternoon Blues Club presents a myriad of local bands, (not just blues) ably hosted by two of the coolest DJs known to man and beast, Dylan Gibbons and Dave Le Moderne. These guys put vinyl back on the map when the average Hipster was wearing nappies!

User

Really nice venue!

User

Over the last 10 years I have worked at the Hare and been to many nights out at the Hare. It's our first choice as a couple to go out for a drink too and we know we will always get a warm welcome when we do.

The new PA system is amazing and the range if Rum is coming along nicely.

Stefan and Adam are a credit to the community.

User

Love this place, staff are friendly and on point. As for a music venue... The best in the midlands. I had a great night! As always. Nightmares On Wax, it's next year. Hare & Hound.. See you in a few weeks. Thank you.

User

Had a great night there Sunday night for the skafest the live bands were superb singing a wide repertoire of all reggae and ska songs even met Dave Wakelin from the Beat !!

Will be visiting again soon, highly recommend thank you for a great night xx

User

Friendly, helpful staff, well looked after and serving good beer. The smaller venue room has good acoustics and a stage large enough for five musicians to play comfortably. A very good night out in an excellent small venue.

User

First visit yesterday to watch The Mersey Beatles.

Great pub and amostphere. Nice staff and friendly.

Best cover band I have seen on The Beatles and they was worth seeing.

Thank you for a nice evening.

User

Fantastic Heritage Nights..only fault is that no one clears up during the night,so after the 1st hour there is nowhere to put your drink down and end up dancing in a sea of plastic cups..

Other than that we love it!

User

Excellent venue all-round: 2 great rooms, friendly & knowledgeable staff, top booking policy they punch above they’re weight & must have a great & growing reputation with acts & promoters. Some of my fave ever gigs have been at the H&H

User

Excellent club set-up upstairs kick ass sound system and most of all happy party going clubbers who appreciate good music - great vibe friendly and professional door staff and good service behind the bar - check out what's on to suit your tastes definitely worth a visit...

Been here for live music numerous times. Great little venue with surprisingly good acoustics. Some damn fine bands play here too. If you like your music loud up close and personal get yourself to this venue. You won't be disappointed.

Always a great night out at The Hare And Hounds. Great pub and music venue. Good size. 2 great live rooms upstairs. Always great music. Friendly staff. Lovely choice of ciders and spirits. Easy to get to on the main road.

Open late on many nights.

Myself and many friends have been going there for years and will continue to for many more.

Best venue in Birmingham for a great night out. 👌

User

Absolutely unreal music venue. Intimate, friendly and always supporting up and coming artists. Went for the first time this week which provided the best gigging experience of my life. I'll definitely be back

User

A top class venue very well run. If you visit Birmingham it's well worth taking the time to nip over to Kings Heath and feel the vibe. In my view it's the beating heart of Kings Heath. Well done to Adam and his team 10/10

User

Lovely pub sublime music nights are great but the drink prices are extortionate
